(I’ve found this to especially be the case with languages that get overshadowed by their neighbors, like Polish or Catalán. )

  • Learn just a little of the language. Need not be able to speak proper grammar and full regular sentences. Don’t need to learn a lot of vocabulary. But learn a few common words, learn when to use them. “Please” and “Thank you” go a long way. I discovered the best phrase for traveling in Japan was “Please say that again, my ears are slow” and bring out a little pocket dictionary. Always got a little smile and made me more human, not just a tourist foreigner to avoid.
