📹 AAA: Is it Worth the Cost? — What You Need to Know
Have you heard of AAA but aren’t sure what they offer or if a membership is worth it? Let’s take a look at what to know about …
It’s a love hate relationship with AAA. I have been with them for 13 years. I have the AAA plus membership. I pay $96/year and get two free tows and each tow is up to 100 miles and they will drop the car off at any location I want, including my house. The Con is very few service stations will work for AAA, because AAA only pays their price to the tow truck companies. I have had to wait 2.5-7 hours for AAA to arrive on scene, because they mostly come out of the larger cities, so they have to drive 100 miles to get to cars in rural communities.
Been a member of the Auto Club since ’98. They were great for the most part in Southern California, I was able to schedule tows in advance (there were times when I broke down on a Saturday evening, and most shops didn’t open till Monday). I’ve had them for the last seven years now in Oregon/Idaho region and they are horrible! Tried scheduling a tow to take my vehicle to specialist out of town for a Monday, on the Friday before, they told me to call first thing Monday morning and it wouldn’t be problem. So, 6:00 AM Monday morning, I call, and you guessed it, it WAS a problem! Long story short, after being passed around, hung up on a few times, by both AAA dispatch and the two Tow Companies ( I was NOT being rude) a tow truck driver finally showed up around 10:00, then he had to fuel up and get breakfast on the way, so my vehicle didn’t get to the shop till after noon! I had a scheduled appointment with the shop for first thing in the morning.. They weren’t too happy about that and that led to a horrible domino affect of events! Never got an apology from AAA not surprisingly.
Recently i had an accident to be exact 12 12 2019 at 6:05 pm . I called AAA roadside service she said 15 to 25 minutes after that i called again same . There is 4 cars involved in that accident i was the last one left by the side of the Freeway AAA was not the one who got me out . It was more than an hour already and CHP officer told me there is a chance will get hit by a drunk driver if we stay there longer . CHP called another towing to get my car out there and the officer drop me off at home. If you get an accident do not rely on AAA roadside service that was my experience. If you are home and car do not start they are there less than 15 minutes. They are not reliable when it comes to real emergency situations. Plus Member here i paid ahead to get the service that i thought i will get but did not…. such a shame .
If you own a motorcycle a third party towing service membership is a must. Do not rely on your insurance company’s roadside assistance program. I found that out after being stranded for 8 hours and had to call an outside company at a cost of $250 after Geico dropped the ball on me. I’m still waiting for reimbursement and may have to get the Louisiana Insurance Commission involved in getting refunded. I’m back with AAA now, had I kept this membership they would have had someone out in 2 hours and I would have been able to get to work in my car and not lost a day’s pay on top of an exorbitant towing bill that I have to fight to get reimbursed.
Avoid driving in holidays because today’s new year my vehicle broke down and I didn’t get any towing. They told me because of New Years, there is no towing available to me. I was told to get it towed to different towing service but not to them. I paid $200 for aaa road side service and didn’t get it this New Year.
20 years of membership, last night I attended a party in a rural area, the house was about a half a mile of the nearest paved road when I was ready to get back home my automatic transmission fail and I was unable to move my vehicle. I called AAA, they sent a tow truck one hour later, the driver called me and said “We’re not allowed to go off the paved road for safety reasons, can you bring down your car to the paved road”, there was no rain in months, no trees, it was a nice road. Every body left the party and I called AAA and they gave me the same answer the driver gave me. I replied “I’m the last one here you’re worry about tow truck driver safety, how about my own safety?” They said “Call your local police department”. I called a friend to get help. I have use AAA about tree times in 20 years and only because my battery died. I you live in a rural area DON’T USE THEIR SERVICES!
I used to use AAA, until they left me stranded. I paid for their premium service for a person that has an RV. Before getting the membership I asked several different AAA salespeople if I could be assured that I would be towed if I was to break down with my pickup truck with my camper attached to the pickup truck. I have a slide in camper the type of camper that sets in the bed of the pickup truck. I was assured that that would not be a problem. When I broke down not only did they leave me stranded on the side of the road when I had a cancer surgery appointment the next day, they said there was nobody in the town that could tow my vehicle. The thing is I’ve worked for several tow companies in that town and I know that there are several companies that had the ability to tow my vehicle. It is very common for a pickup to have a camper on it and it does not take any real special equipment in fact about 2 weeks later I use their service to have a friend’s car towed, the truck that showed up to tow the car would have been totally capable if towing my pickup truck with a camper on it, in fact the driver said that he’s done it several times. the thing about AAA is they are a bunch of smaller companies. the staff at AAA were very rude to me and refuse to give me a number of anybody over them that I could speak to. Finally I filled out a report I’ve complained and I was assured that I would hear back from them within 5 to 6 weeks I never heard back from them. Finally I got on Google and look up for a CEO of AAA oh, I was given the name of a man in Florida, I sent an email and within a week I received a return message.
AAA roadside dispatchers have zero interest in customer service. Particularly James who works in the Northern California office. If you have other roadside services in your area I highly recommend you you give them a try. Unless you enjoy getting attitude from dispatch at 1:30Am while you’re sitting alone in your cold, dead vehicle waiting for help to arrive.
All and all they are a good thing to have and I already used them a few times to get me bailed out. However… My last call is when I had a blowout and not able to access the spear tire due to damage to the rear bumper which requires a lug wrench to go through a porthole to drop down the spear. The bumper was pushed in due to a recent accident when someone rear ended me at a traffic light causing the porthole to be out of alignment with the lug wrench fitting. I had no other way for transportation other than hitching a ride with the flatbed driver. When I called AAA, I was told I could not ride with the flatbed driver due to Covid19 and had to find another ride while my vehicle was being transported to the nearest tire shop. I was upset about it but when the flatbed driver showed up… he did not mind and I put on a mask anyhow and rode along until we to to the tire shop.
Here’s the reader’s digest version of the information he left out: Instead of setting 🔥 to over $100 a year to cover that one emergency you have every 3 years. Just plan on spending about 300 on a wrecker service to come help you by giving them a call and using your credit card to pay for it when it happens.
Consider… blue stamps… green stamps… the green book… in the red or black… moats… echoes and taking care of stewardship and complex conditions. Gas lines and water lines and property lines…. Go easy… it’s workable… and it’s only workable because so many people care and have worked so very hard… so very humbling and confidence building. Streams and pools and beyond. Health, climate and tools and reality and optimism.
Ah… ratings and effects of helping with car breakdowns… so weird really. Yet, here we all are… the thing about pressure… I have never really had a breakdown… like most things… there’s more involved. The complexity of systems and space for misplaced narratives across proxy and layers of good intentions and inertia… just breathe ya’ll.
Not much of a fan… The only two times I’ve used and need them, they kind of fizzled out and didn’t show up. The first time, they had me for a really long time on the phone waiting with no idea how much longer they’d be. I eventually hung up and called my friend to pick me up and then I called AAA again later in the morning and thankfully they did eventually show (btw the employee did a good job& was quick). The Second time I used them, my car was stranded less than a mile from home. They said they’d tow my car around 9pm. I waited for an hour and half and they never showed up so I canceled the request and walked home.
No aaa is NOTworth their services! I was traveling home with a RV 300 miles and had a blowout in a rear tire of the dual tires in the back. (We were with in 200 miles of our home) they said they would only tow us 100 miles and it clearly states 200 miles on the website. they didn’t have a truck big enough except for in a town 90 miles away which would have taken quite awhile to get to us plus this RV didn’t have heat or anything working. Also the representative didn’t offer to send a truck out that could fix the tire we did have a spare but couldn’t get it the blown -out tire off the RV. You would think they would at least have someone in a town closer that could do this, it is their job. So I asked the representative if I could find some tire person in the next town to come and he said yes that I would be reimbursed so we did this. I understood that you can have another persons car tire fixed or towed and since this was my sons RV I thought this was ok …but since they paid for it with their credit card they won’t reimburse. I took the receipt for service into aaa’s office and had the person at the desk fill it out and they took my aaa card and said it would be a month. Now it has been 2 mos. and I called them and they denied reimbursement because it wasn’t a member. When you are on the road and these things happen it’s all you can do to go through the procedures to get out of your predicament and get home . Aaa was not AT ALL helpful and kept telling us they could/would only be able to tow us 100 miles and yes I have a Premier RV card.
100% not worth it they’re living off of reputation that they can’t live up to anymore. First time I use them for a toe. They lock my keys in the car, killed my battery and then tried to sell me on a lockout today in the middle of a snowstorm after they were supposed to show up an hour later tell me that they’re 2 1/2 hours out so I canceled both my insurance and my roadside assistance with them. Also price things out. Don’t automatically tell people you are a AAA member at hotels because the price just might be higher.
