This is such a wonderfully well researched article. I”m particularly stoked about Mexico and Mexico City, which I fell in love with while I was there. Parts of Mexico City remind me of Europe and is such an ideal spot if you need to be in N. American Time Zones. I’m also stoked b/c a lot of the E. European cities that I have still missed are open. I love to travel, and have been to over 45 nations in my life, but with the pandemic it just doesn’t seem worth the bother to go abroad for a while. Even if you can get into some nations, many of the sites which you want to see may be closed, or have burdensome restrictions. In my opinion this is a great time to see and enjoy your home nation. The rest of the world will still be there next year.
Excellent work Kristin – well-research and well presented very timely information. I can also vouch for Mexico being relatively safe to travel to – I spent most of July in the Riviera Maya as well (Puerto Morelos specifically), and if anything, they take virus spread prevention far more seriously than the U.S. does. There are enforced temperature checks prior to entry into any indoor grocery or restaurant facility, and hand sanitizer and wiping your feet are also required. I wasn’t thrilled about the stifling humidity and mosquitoes this time of year, but still a great experience overall.
Hawaii travel is still very much restricted. Technically it’s open but you have to self quarantine for 14 days if you’re coming from the mainland and they’re being very strict about this. People have been arrested for breaking quarantine. If you’re seen leaving a hotel before your quarantine ends, staff and management are required to report you to the authorities. If you airbnb, some neighbors have been reporting quarantine breakers.
I’ve got a trip to Bali coming up in January, 2021….Latest is that Indonesia will be reopening to foreign tourism on Sept 11 (maybe, maybe not, we shall see), but if Indonesia tries to implement anything like Cambodia to nickle and dime tourists, I will cancel my trip. I can confirm that Mexico is open to US citizens. I flew down to Mexico City 3 days ago, and had no problems whatsoever entering the country. I’m going to Cuba in 10 days, and there are no restrictions as far as I’m aware.
Mexico does have a health declaration card you have to fill out before you board the plane here in US, then when you get to the airport they will check your temperature. At the hotels they will check your temperature and have to keep your face mask all times at restaurants & lobby. I really felt safe in Mexico they had hand sanitizer and required to maintain distance between guest.
Hola, Kristin! I am a US citizen but I have been in Playa del Carmen, Mexico for 2 months now. Do the US bans still apply to me, or will it be looked at as simply coming from Mexico? Hawaii has been closed to casual tourists since March. The state government has been pretty aggressive with a 14 day mandatory quarantine for anyone flying in, including residents. It’s also now illegal to try to book private residences (AirBnB and such) because people were trying to use those to fly under the radar and avoid quarantine.
Flying to Puerto Vallarta next month as there are direct flights from SFO. I am a little concerned about how long these flights might be offered as government PPE propping up airlines ends in October. Doing my part to support the airlines in the meantime. Think PV is going to fill the void resulting from Hawaiian quarantine restriction. Food is so much cheaper and better too.

I am in the United States, I usually live in Chiangmai Thailand. They have opened up for those of us that have a long stay visa in Place but they have a two week quarantine in a government controlled hotel that’s sucks. It would have been good to know if one is in Albania could he/she cross into Greece, Macedonia or Monte Negro by land. Another question concerns the quarantine period in Hawaii. If one is traveling only in transit to Hawaii to another permitting country does the 14 day period still apply? I would think not since the traveler is only to spend a few hours in a transit lounge.
I am confused and I have a question, I live in California, I called the embassy from Russia and they said thay you can’t travel there, but when I called Turkish airlines they say that as long as I travel to Turkey first and then go to Russia I should be able to go there with no problem, so what can I do? I wouldn’t call a country with daunting requirements for travelers “open!” As an American, any country requiring I have a negative COVID-19 test that’s no more than 72 hours old is functionally closed. Three days from test to result in U S. is laughable! Further, quarantine upon arrival can be expensive and time-consuming enough that casual travellers should rethink their plans.

I am a US citizen (Go Gators) and I have a flight scheduled for Germany next week I am so confused about the entry requirements that I have been reading. What I understand is if I have a ned test within 48 hrs of arrival then I could be allowed entry without quarantine. Also, if I don’t have any results that Germany would test me and I have to go straight into quarantine. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks so much.
You need to get more accurate information on some of these. Hawaii requires a strict 2 week quarantine in your hotel. No going out for anything, even food. You are required to stay in your hotel room, and eat room service, or other delivery food for 2 full weeks, all at your cost, before your real vacation can begin. You can’t even go to the hotel bar, pool, or exercise room. Also, getting into Croatia may be easy, getting out, not so much. Most other European nations are now requiring people coming out of Croatia to quarantine for 2 weeks.
Having a hard time getting a COVID19 Test for going to Puerto Rico. I was told n the d to provide a negative test 72 hours prior to arriving. Med7 Clinic is $178 Office visit and $100 lab per person. So $278/per test. I also found places like CVS Pharmacy does a test for $25 but if for airline purposes they will not allow it. Our medical insurance provider will not cover this either. Suggestions?

As usual, great information. Along with Albania, North Macedonia is creeping up my list of places I’d like to visit that have no restrictions on Americans. Fortunately, the COVID numbers in America, and in our state of Florida, are coming down. It seems that every week or so another door is opening for Americans, so I’m in no rush to book anything. My plan, although ever-changing, and dependent on our COVID situation, is to see what happens with the scheduled border opening with Canada next month. Also, I’m interested to see how the election affects our travel-ability. If nothing changes (very unlikely), I’m eying Kosovo or North Macedonia in the spring.

I am a US citizen, currently living in Germany – my Visa ends in January :/ and I don’t know where to go.. I wanted to go to Georgia but that is now closed to US citizens- unless u get the digital nomad visa – I’m just in the beginning stages of that journey.. So I would be traveling as a tourist and I don’t want to keep moving all the time- I’m a sloooow traveler :p Maybe I can go to Croatia for 3 months and then I don’t know where to go, I can’t re enter the Schengen zone for 6 months once I leave. I just returned back to Puerto Rico from the Dominican Republic. Here you had to go thru a screening process but that was about it but the DR was completely open they didn’t even ask one question about covid. Not going to lie I was actually shocked at how easy it was to get through and the people where out everywhere definitely a risk but it’s okay if you protect yourself.

No restrictions to free entry! I love the culture and the Thais. I married a Thai. I lived in Pattaya in the 1980’s and indulged in the carnal acceptance in their culture. I lived in Vietnam in the 70’s which has a similar Southeast Asian acceptance of human sexuality. I lived in Saudi Arabia for four-years which does not. (I did this for work, money, and adventure). The article forgot to note that Hawaii has a mandatory 14 day quarantine upon arrival even for residents returning. If you are a tourist, you have to notify the state when you arrive at the airport. They will then call the hotel accommodation to confirm your stay then they will release you. Once check in, you are not allow to leave the hotel room to do anything. You will have to order food for delivery and your key card to your room is deactivated the next day after you arrive. So if you left your room, you are locked out and they will know. This mandatory 14 day quarantine is being re-evaluated every month and extended as the cases on the island is increasing. DO NOT COME TO HAWAII

Can you use the same phone for local and international calls? What works best? Granted, What’s App and FB Messenger are good for international calls, but what if there’s no wi-fi nearby?

Please stay away from Sri Lanka. The US is a high-risk country and we don’t want anyone to bring more risk here. We are fortunate to have it controlled and not a single community spread cases in the country so far and we want to keep it that way. The last thing we want is people from the champion state of COVID19 visiting Sri Lanka.
