Most clothes reflect or absorb UVR, but wet cotton of any color likely transmits considerable UVR. So snorkeling in a plain white T-shirt may provide very little protection from the sun. To protect your skin against harmful UV rays, it is essential to wear sunscreen, time of day, proximity to the equator, and areas at higher altitudes. A regular white cotton T-shirt only has a UPF rating of about 5, which allows through most UV radiation.
A rash guard or swim shirt is crucial for sun protection, and being environmentally friendly is essential. Dry white shirts have an SPF of seven, while wet shirts have an SPF of only three. For sensitive skin, wearing sun protection clothes or even a simple cotton T-shirt under the suit can help avoid rash and irritation.
When spending extended periods in the sea, it is recommended to use a decent product such as a shirt, rash guard, swim pants or leggings, and a head cover to protect from the sun. Dark blue, black, and dark red are the best colors for sun protection compared to white or pastel colors of the same fabric. A rash guard is designed for wearing in the water and typically won’t be as comfortable as a well-made sun shirt out of the water.
A swim cap would protect the head but not the neck, while bright colors make it easier to spot. A bright yellow shirt is more protective than a pale one. Unique snorkeling rash guards with hoods and leggings are used to protect ourselves from the sun and sea lice stings.
In the tropics, a UV 50 t-shirt, log-sleeved, and possibly with a head cover is recommended.
