Are there tigers on Koh Lanta?
Mammals consists of 20 families, 30 genus and 38 species. Species which used to inhabit the Lanta islands but are now gone are wild deer, common barking deer, fishing cat and tiger. The sea cow (dugong) is a conserved species and the Marshall big ear crow bat is also rarely seen these days.
Birds on the islands total 58 families, 130 genus and 185 species. Most easily spotted in the national park are Brahminy kite, bridled tern and emerald dove while, the most difficult to find are orange-breasted trogon, Siberian thrush, and the little spiderhunter.
Reptiles include the water monitor lizard, reticulated python and cobra.
Are there dolphins in Koh Lanta?
Koh Haa. Nestled within the Koh Lanta National Park is one of the jewels of the Andaman Sea. It is a collection of six islands – Koh Haa Yai and its five smaller islands.
During the journey out on our speedboat, look out for dolphins which are regularly seen here, and even the occasional whale.
As you approach the islands, your eye will be drawn away from the incredible limestone karst islands rising magnificently from the ocean, and you’ll start to notice the deep blue of the sea change to the beautiful azure hue of the lagoon.
The lagoon is an excellent place for snorkeling as it is only about 6 meters deep with a mass of different varieties of soft and hard corals. On the west side of the lagoon is a fine white-powdered sandy beach where you can laze away the time between diving or snorkeling.
Can you see whale sharks in Koh Lanta?
Koh Haa 6 is the place where more sightings of whale sharks are recorded than anywhere else in the local Koh Lanta area. Large rays are also seen here. On the reef, you will find ghost pipefish hidden behind sea urchins, and glassfish cascading down the corals like a waterfall. Some of the larger predators like golden trevallies, dogfin tuna and rainbow runners hang out in the blue watching for their chance to feed.
Are there turtles in Koh Lanta?
Olive Ridley Turtle This turtle lives in the seas around Koh Lanta and all of our dive sites, and can be seen during boat trips to/from dive sites, but it rarely seen on the actual dive sites. Olive Ridley Sea Turtle has spawning behaviour different from other sea turtles.
There are 5 sea turtle species found in Thai waters: Leatherback, Olive Ridley, Loggerhead, Green and Hawksbill. All species are protected under the Thai Wildlife Protection Act of 1992. Some, such as the Hawksbill Turtle are a critically endangered species, and can be seen at most coral reefs while diving Koh Lanta.
The five species found in Thai waters can be identified as follows:
- Leatherback Turtle – 5 distinct ridges, no scutes
- Green, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Olive Ridley – no continuous ridges, shell plates
Are there jellyfish in Koh Lanta?
The thick-arm or ‘fat-arm’ jellyfish are a family of over 20 jellyfish species, often drifting past the islands and dive sites around Koh Lanta.
These jellyfish have domed bells reaching upward of 40 cm in diameter. Members of this family have eight short arms surrounding the mouth. The arms are three-sided.
These jellyfish swim in jerks by contracting their circular and radial muscles,. They have no control over the direction of locomotion and drift with the currents.
