In No Man’s Sky, you can find an S-Class living frigate by detecting anomalies between star systems. Obtaining the first Living Frigate is easy, as you can jump between star systems until you come across an event. However, finding a rare S-Class Frigate is difficult, and it can be expensive. Lower-class frigates are cheaper and reach S-class over time. This guide teaches you how to unlock these Living Frigates and farm unlimited ones in the No Man’s Sky Endurance update.

Transmission Towers. Using a Transmission Tower is the simplest way to find a Crashed Ship. These towers are POIs located randomly on planets.
Inside each tower is a puzzle where you have to enter an access code. This will ping the distress beacon of any nearby Crashed Ship or Crashed Freighter.
Transmission Towers are pretty huge, so you’ll likely see them as you cruise over the surface of a planet.
Give A Gift To A Faction NPC In The Local Space Station. Each system will have a dominant race or faction. If you talk with an NPC in a local Space Station, a piece of dialog might suggest that there’s a nearby distress signal, and they’d like you to do something about it.

INTRODUCTION. Frigates are an indispensable part of any navy. These ships usually form the numerical bulk of a naval fleet as they are relatively cheaper than large destroyers and cruisers. Every modern navy operates frigates in some or the other form and uses them along with larger surface combatants like destroyers and aircraft carriers. The definition of a modern frigate by Defencyclopedia is.
A modern frigate is a 3000-7000 ton warship, equipped with an array of missiles, guns and radars, and is designed to operate autonomously, along with a battle group or act as an escort for non-combatants, in order to fulfill a variety of tasks depending on the mission.
A warship displacing 5000-7000 tons need not always be called as a frigate, as many navies prefer the designation of a ‘destroyer’ for such warships. The designations vary from one navy to another, but the role of the ships does not change. Some countries call their larger surface combatants as frigates for political reasons and some others call their smaller surface combatants as frigates. A modern frigate can displace anywhere between 3000-7000 tons. But for the sake of this article, only frigates displacing 4000-7000 tons will be considered.
What does a Type 23 frigate do?
The Type 23 frigate or Duke class is a class of frigates built for the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy. The ships are named after British Dukes, thus leading to the class being commonly known as the Duke class. The first Type 23, HMSNorfolk, was commissioned in 1989, and the sixteenth, HMSSt Albans was commissioned in June 2002. They form the core of the Royal Navy’s destroyer and frigate fleet and serve alongside the Type 45 destroyers. They were designed for anti-submarine warfare, but have been used for a range of uses. Nine Type 23 frigates remain in service with the Royal Navy, with three vessels having been sold to the Chilean Navy and four being retired since 2021.
The Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigates will be replaced by the Type 26 Global Combat Ship and the Type 31 frigate. As of 2021 it is anticipated that HMS St Albans will be the last to retire from the Royal Navy, in 2035.
When first conceived in the late 1970s, the Type 23 was intended to be a light anti-submarine frigate with a towed array sonar to counter Soviet nuclear submarines operating in the North Atlantic. The Type 23 would be replacing the Leander-class frigates (which had entered service in the 1960s) and the Type 21 frigate (a general purpose design that had recently entered service) as the backbone of the Royal Navy’s surface ship anti-submarine force. The procurement of the class was announced in the 1981 Defence White Paper as “simpler and cheaper than the Type 22 (with) its characteristics… framed with an eye to the export market as well as Royal Navy needs.”

Is an S-class frigate worth it?
Don’t worry too much about the class rank, as all frigates level up in this category as they go on more and more expeditions. Sure, finding a frigate at S-class is nice, but it also costs more, whereas a lower-class frigate will be cheaper and reach S-class over time.
Stats are not the only thing to consider, though. All frigates can get the job done, but the positive bonus traits that a frigate has can determine if it’s great or best avoided.
Watch for frigates with good positive traits and at least halfway decent stats. If a frigate has 0 in some stats, that’s fine, but each one will often perform each of the roles on an expedition. In other words, an exploration specialist will still benefit from numbers in combat, industrial, or trade.
Every frigate will specialize in one of five areas: combat, exploration, industrial, trade, or support. The first four will perform better in expeditions that match their specialization; support frigates conserve fuel, therefore reducing the amount needed for an expedition. Each of them also has another bonus, outlined below.
Does every ship have an S class NMS?
Although every ship model in the game could spawn as S-Class grade, there are some unique models referred to as “Exotic” that only spawn as S-Class grade. If they spawn at all, they are limited to ONE ship, per solar system.
The inventory ranges for Exotics are 15-20 for small. Exotic ships do not appear in the medium or large inventory tier, but they have very high class bonuses (damage, shield and hyperdrive range).
Ships of this type are categorized by their “Organic” looking architecture. Their release was seen during the Melody Of The Egg quest, being added first secretly in the Experimental Branch on 18/02/2020. These ships utilize Biotechnology to function, having separate shielding, pulse engine, weaponry etc, with organic names.
Where are the S-class ships in no mans sky?
All exotic ships are in the S-class, and as such, comprise many of the best vessels in the game. Finding these spacecraft is not easy, as they are scattered across many different systems. Given the procedural nature of the game, there are no locations where a player is guaranteed to find one.
S-class ships are more likely to spawn in 3-star systems such as those with descriptors like Opulent or Advanced. In order to determine the wealth of particular system, players will need to own an economy scanner. Ships within a given system will often have the same color scheme which can be helpful if players are looking for a particular paint job. Often new vessels can be found by visiting space stations or trading posts. If no ships land, then saving and reloading the game can often make new ones spawn.
- The Four Types Of Exotic Ship And How To Find Them. Royal-style ships have ball cockpits and bi-furcated double noses. Often found in Vy’keen systems
- Guppy-Style ships have gall cockpits with no nose. Some varieties have elongated rears to look more like fish.
- Mosquito-style ships are the final variety of exotic class ships with a ball cockpit. They are identifiable by their single, long thin nose.
- Squid/Calamari-style ships have a wide variety of different cockpits and distinctive tentacle noses. These are incredibly valuable ships due to their rarity. The telescopic tentacles will fold up when landed.
While fighter class ships and frigates are often better suited for combat, this exotic squid style ship comes with a rocket launcher already installed. The formidable armaments on the OL6 Naratsu are complemented by strong shields and good maneuverability.

Thanks for the vid, your solution worked really well. I’d like to add the following bonuses of doing this, especially if you need units, ships and nanites: First to add, I agree with other posts, its best to take out the shields slowly and destroy the fuel rods at the same time, then take out the warp engines and the dreadnought gives up. Once thats done land, check the class, if it is not an S Class, go to the captain, demand tribute, return to ship. rinse and repeat. My run to get an S Class took 24 attempts, results of the 24 runs was: 1 x A Class, 1 x B Class, 21 x C Class and the final 1 x S class with 25+13. Bonuses for those that are leveling, or still completing all research: 1. Captain – Every run, if you see the captain on the bridge you can select “Demand Tribute” and recieve 6.767 Million units every time. 2. Nanites – Every time the dreadnought gives up, you gain around 450 to 490 Nanites. 3. S Class Ships – Lot of s class ships landing on the dreadnought during my 24 runs. I recorded 1 x exotic and 5 x S class comprised of solar / other, (Not sure if this was my system or not) Total Gains of my 24 runs: S Class Dreadnought: 25+13 (Could of been better lol) Units: $155.64M Nanites: 10810 Nanites (at 470 Average) Hope this helps you 🙂
For me personally i’ve found some differences in my game. Warping out and back results in no pirate dreadnought after loading. Going to a space station to generate a save point also results in no pirate dreadnought after loading the save. I feel like the only tactic that works is to keep killing it, checking class and then reloading the auto save. Also when it disappears it seems to trigger a cooldown to completely screw you over. I spent probably half an hour just warping around after playing for a couple hours to spawn my 2nd pirate frigate. Sad I really don’t understand why they insist on making the freighter acquisition process effectively human torture.
You can also fly the trenches, go slow enough to shoot out the shiels AND the fuel rods that pop up where the shield globe was. Leave 1 fuel rod alone, which prevents the warp sequence timer, shoot out the engines then go shoot out the last fuel rod and the ship will surrender. You don’t need to take out the turrets.
I actually use my Dreadnought to destroy sentinel cruisers in the blink of an eye, just piss of the sentinels right by your capital ship, get the cruiser to fire in its direction til you hear the alarm go off, drop the cruisers shield gennys and watch the anti freighter cannons obliterate it in as fast as you can swing a 180 to watch, but sometimes if you don’t do hull damage yourself you won’t get the Carrier AI
Faster way: 1. Before warping into a pirate system, go to a Space Station and save the game there (get out of the ship and enter again). 2. Then warp to the pirate system, go to the Dreadnought and destroy all 4 propulsors, and all 6 laser cannons, that should be enough to win the battle. 3. Then enter the ship and see it’s class. If’s not S-Class, then go to options and Reload Restore Point (NOT RELOAD AUTOSAVE), you should load at the Space Station before warping. 4. Repeat steps and. Note: Before reloading the restored save, always remember the name and position of the system you warped, because you will need to warp there until you get the S-Class Dreadnought. Note 2: If there’s not a Dreadnought on the system you warp-in, just go to the Space Station of this new system and repeat all the steps.
Another bug is if you had a Pirate Dreadnaught and end up getting a civilian Frieghter later like when converting a normal save from Expedition back to normal mode your Frieghter will be glitched missing the connecting section between base and hangar and the body of the ship as you’ll have the landable part of the Pirate Dreadnaught and the body of the civilian ship glitched together and it’s really bad looking.
Yesterday I defeat one S class dreadnought. I thought it was just a basic freighter because there were not so many slots as my current freighter. After I got the money from captain I just get out of it and destroy it. Now that I find out you guys even wrap 20-30 times for it 8 kinda regret doing that ( BTW it was the first one that I get to defeat and it was the first warp that day)
In the instance where you summoned the dreadnaught it was waaaaaay off elevation from the target. do these things have turrets on the ventral side? I’ve only seen a few up close so I can’t say…. But it seemed like all heavy guns are up top. Might have to re-position the dreadnaught to get the guns in proper range. Would be great if they moved a little to get into position (or summoning it within radius of another capital ship automatically put it into an optimal position.)
I just tried today and noticed that in 15 tries the name of the dreadnought was always the same and it was always c-class and the only thing which was different was the number of slots it has…. good thing I was able to speed up the process by destroying this energy banners which come up after destroying the shield spheres make the frighter flee if you destroy all of them so you can directly destroy the warp drive dont know if that is very time critical but i always were able to destroy the warp drive if you do so you do not need to also destroy all the cannons…. But unfortunately my impression is that i was very unlucky or they fixed it so that per system/event the frighter will stay always same class and only the slots change…. if someone has other/better experience… let me know 😉
I did this on my second try. It’s not hard. Just attack the shields and guns to prevent it from destroying the civilians and make your life easy. After this it will try to get away, you just have to destroy the engines before it leaves, you have plenty of time. You board it and tell them to hand over them keys or something like that and it’s done.
A better method (IMO) rather than reloading a save point. Trigger the Pirate event on 2 systems (preferably ones you can warp with no special warp engines). 1. Defeat the pirate capital ship 2. Check class 3. If S class, you stop right here, else continue 4. Jump to the other system where this was triggered as well Rinse and repeat until you get your S class.
To everyone saying that this works it doesn’t…..if you leave your pirate encounter you’ll lose the opportunity entirely you have to get a backup save and then do this and that’s only when that type of ship spawns which means you have to jump to random systems until the dreadnaught spawns and then you reload your game 1 jump before and rinse and repeat this guy is full of BS
25 tries is super far ahead of the curve, my man. Back when it was just freighters, I gave up after about 30 tries to settle on an A class. I then read that it’s apparently 2% chance for an S class to spawn in a prosperous system. So that’s a minimum of 50 tries on average. Jesus. I wish Hello games allows us to upgrade our capship class like with our smol ships. Because it’s a little silly if our actual homes are the only things you can’t actually improve.
