Where Is The Davao Landmark’S Ground Zero?

The death toll from a landslide in the southern Philippines has reached 68, with the ground zero in the landslide at Zone 1, Barangay Masara, in the municipality of Maco, Davao del Oro, being approximately 3,000 square meters. The local government reported that there are 326 households in Masara, but the exact number of households in Zone 1 or Ground Zero is still being validated by the city’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) 911.

The city Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DSWD) chief flew to Davao de Oro on orders from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to assure local officials of support from the national government in these disasters. The landslide occurred on February 6, 2024, after heavy rainfall, killing at least 98 people. Ground Zero, the former main battle area between government forces and the Islamic State-inspired Maute Group, has been under construction for five years.

The newly reconstructed Jameo Mindanao Al-Islamie–Islamic Center of Marawi, also known as the Grand Mosque, stands tall and shining in the middle of the landslide. The arena of battle between government and Maute/Abu Sayyaf forces in 2017, MAA, also known as Ground Zero, is now nothing more than empty spaces. Local authorities are now investigating why a mining village was established on what is supposed to be a no-build zone.
