Who is the captain on Celebrity Infinity?

Hello, this is Michael Sympouras, Captain of the beautiful Celebrity Infinity. I feel very honored to represent the fantastic crew of this amazing vessel. I have been on board since Dry Dock in the Bahamas, and have enjoyed working with the team of professionals to enhance this vessel. It takes an incredible amount of dedication and commitment to do so, as the ship is not only a cruise ship for our guests—it also has to perform in some of the most challenging seas in the world! Therefore, I would like to thank everyone in both the Marine and Hotel divisions for all your support, as it is a pleasure to be your Captain. Having sailed on Celebrity Infinity several years ago, it is wonderful to return and hear the guests comment about our newly Solsticized vessel.

Presently, we are sailing through the Chilean Fjords, heading for the Straights of Magellan tomorrow, and then we will celebrate Christmas Day sailing around Cape Horn. What a magical experience for myself personally and for all of us on board; I am so excited to be here during this special time of year!

I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday season, and I hope you will come and see first hand why I am so proud to be the Captain of this magnificent ship!

What is celebrity’s smallest ship?

With a passenger capacity of just 16, the Xploration is Celebrity’s smallest ship. As such, cruisers can expect an intimate onboard ambiance. When not out and about exploring the Galapagos, guests can hang in the lounge, relax in their suite (some with private balconies), and soak up some rays — or stargaze — on the hot tub-equipped sundeck.

This 22-year-old Celebrity ship offers a more refined, subdued atmosphere compared to the line’s newer ships, which boast flashier features like the Magic Carpet. The Rooftop Terrace area serves as a restaurant, bar, and outdoor movie theater, complete with cozy furnishings coupled with mouthwatering bites and sips. Meanwhile, the adults-only Persian Garden area in the spa is ideal for wellness-seeking cruisers.

Celebrity Summit, which cruises Alaska and the Caribbean, technically dates back to 2001; however, in 2019, it received a $75-million refurbishment to bring it a little more in line with Celebrity’s newest ships, including 2018’s Celebrity Edge. Expect stylish spaces galore, including the Sunset and Martini bars, plus a sleek Rooftop Terrace where cruisers can catch outdoor flicks while basking in the ocean views.

How many passengers does the Infinity have?

2,170-passenger The 90,940-ton, 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity is one of Celebrity Cruises’ four vessels known as Millennium-class.

For now, fans of Celebrity and those new to the line will appreciate the focus on dining. Although the ship is older, it has continually added restaurants so there is a wide variety but many come with an extra fee. You can watch an animated chef make dinner during the Le Petit Chef experience at Qsine, enjoy sushi and go to an Italian steakhouse, but you’ll pay for those. The good news is that the included dining in the Oceanview Cafe buffet, the pool grill and the Trellis main dining room is decent, with lots of choices (although it’s not gourmet). Passengers in AquaClass have their own restaurant, Blu, and suite passengers can dine in Luminae, which is a notch up from the main dining room in both food and service.

Sun worshippers also will be very happy on Celebrity Infinity. Two pools are outdoors: One is tiered so you can get your feet wet and cool off without getting all the way in while the other is deeper. Then there’s the enclosed Solarium, which has a jetted thalassotherapy pool and a roof so you can enjoy it even when it rains. Finally, the Outdoor Retreat has covered cabanas and a big screen for movie nights. And an upper outdoor sun deck toward the front of the ship has plenty of loungers.

While Celebrity rarely has the party vibe of sister company Royal Caribbean, there are plenty of options for cocktail connoisseurs. With a prime location overlooking the Grand Foyer, the shaved-ice-covered Martini Bar is almost always crowded. Additionally, wine-lovers will gravitate to Cellar Masters.

  • Thanks for the article!! I have an update on this ship I just came off of a 7 night cruise in Greece. The ice cream is solid now lol it was perfect! Also the pizza was really good and literally kept flying off the shelf. I had to wait 20 mins for a slice because it was all done and the chef had to keep making pizza. Once I got a slice, the line up of people finished it again Ahaha.

  • Happy to see your smiling faces in another great GBU article! I’m actually pleasantly surprised at how good the Infinity is looking! I cruised on her in 2002, her second? season. That was a different Celebrity back then but it was a great cruise. Only our second cruise, so we didn’t have a lot to compare it to at the time. Glad you had a port intensive itinerary so you weren’t staring at that tiny computer monitor, I mean, TV. 😂

  • in 2005 I was on the infinity, Before that I was loyal to Royal and had tried Princess. After the cruise on the Infinity, Celebrity became my favorite cruise line. I liked the size and layout of the ship and the service was best I had ever had. The friends that went on that cruise with me all look back on that cruise with good memories, Since I have been cruising for over 30 years the Infinity was a large ship back then. I had cruised on some smaller ships like The Song Of America and the Viking Serenade (38.5k and 40K tons). In the 30 years of cruising I have been on small ships and some of the mega liners. I prefer the smaller ships that are cruise ships and not floating amusement parks. I’m happy to see the Infinity is being kept in good condition, She is an elegant lady for her age. I’d be happy to cruise on her again.

  • Thanks for the Good, Bad and Ugly for Celebrity Infinity. These smaller ships, although older, are still a nice alternative to the larger mega ships. And the Solarium, with that thermal pool with spa-like atmosphere, is my favorite spot to go. I’ve been on Summit and Millennium, and they too have this type of Solarium feature. Thanks again for a great go-to website for cruising.🥰

  • We’ve sailed on the Infinity class of ships multiple times and always love them. We better all relish these perfectly sized ships before they are gone. Never appear outdated to us, always quite beautiful. The art work on Celebrity ships is the best in the industry. It is meant to challenge and not be boring and conventional like every other cruise line.

  • We were on the exact same cruise as you two (saw you on the helipad sail away and a couple of other times). We agree totally with everything you say! We were moved up to a suite, so ate in Luminae, but picked from Blu menu a few times. The food was great. As you say, the staff are amazing on Infinity. We considered out wait staff, martini bartender almost as friends by the time we goy off

  • Thanks @JJCruise! We’ll be going on our first ever Celebrity cruise on the Infinity. We know it’s an older ship but we don’t mind the “dated” look as long as things are clean. We chose this particular cruise because of the itinerary (12 day Spain, Canary Islands and Morocco). Too bad about the pizza and pasta, those are my hubby’s faves. Hopefully they’ll sort that out before our cruise. As an aside, if there’re any shore excursion tips anyone can give on the places we’ll be at, it would be very much welcomed.

  • First, I have to say that I can’t decide which one of you has the bigger smile, you guys are just way too cute!!! I have only been on the equinox which was last year, but this Sunday I am leaving on the ascent and I’m really excited. I have been on carnival, Royal and Norwegian and I was just so blown away by that celebrity cruise last year, I mean, it was just perfection in every single way. so I probably would go on one of their older ships, especially if it was an itinerary like yours, what a fabulous itinerary!!! Greece looks so beautiful. I can’t say anything about the late night eats on the equinox, because I’m always asleep by 11 o’clock lol 😂

  • Hi! was on the infinity for best of Greece mid may this year -2024- so wasn’t long after your sailing. I also had aquaclass. Your article was spot on. The pizza station was hit or miss.. The pasta station wasn’t any better on my sailing.. Had great service and enjoyed it.. Hopefully they will re retire it and replace it with something newer.

  • Thanks for the articles. I will be on my first Celebrity cruise in July – can’t wait!😊 I do have a question – do they do a white party? I’ve been reading that they do a Full Moon Party where you are invited to wear white. Basically, I am wondering if I need to pack something white. I spill far too often so I was hoping to avoid that.

  • We agree with you mostly (from the same cruise 2 weeks earlier) but Gary is sitting next to me saying: TELL EM THEY’RE WRONG ABOUT THE PIZZA!!! Idk maybe they switched the pizza guys around but Gary got pizza every night and said it was hot and delicious! 1 thing that you didn’t mention was the thermal spa. I just went on a tirade about how much I hated it in our most recent article. Did you go? Thoughts? Feelings? Love perusal you guys!

  • I’ve sailed the Infinity twice, first time in 2008 and it felt a little dated even back then (probably because I’ve been spoiled by their larger and newer ships). Regardless, I have always enjoyed the Millennium class and will be on the sister Summit this June to Alaska, also in Aquaclass. I hope the Summit has a newer stateroom TV. The fact that Celebrity couldn’t install a new $300 smart TV is a blemish on them, coming out of dry dock. Perhaps they are getting ready to sell off those older ships and limited their investments in updating.

  • Infinity was our first Celebrity ship in Aug 22. We wanted to get away after a summer of tragedy. We did not want 7k people or loud. We needed R &R and we were so well taken care of on the Infinity. This cruise for us, we are 60s, hit the spot. I like the small ship feel. There were around 1200 on board and it was lovely. I never eat late at night so I can not speak about that. Our room was dated but comfortable. I love all the windows in that ship, you could see the ocean from MDR and the main lounge where you would play all the games.

  • The problem in the late night might have been due to lack of help?? Or that there were older people onboard and they are in bed by 10. I have never had a problem with getting fresh pizza late night. I just request a new pizza. You should have gone to guest services and mentioned it to to or at least on the survey at the end of the cruise. Celebrity’s pizza is always pretty good…maybe a fluke on your cruise.

  • You guys sound kind of “young” sometimes IMO. First of all, the ship is 90,000 tons and while that’s “smaller,” it’s not small. The thing is, in the cruise industry, ships much smaller than the Infinity, a Millennium class ship, are considered part of why they’re luxurious. Smaller is more expensive in the industry. Next, the TV is not from the “beginning of time.” TVs were CRT and before that they were only black and white encased in wood furniture. That was a flat screen TV. It wasn’t new, but it wasn’t ancient either. I know it was a joke, but still. And there’s no such thing as dated music. People love music of all eras. I was just listening to an album from 1973. Music from any time period can be enjoyed and a lot of people like music from way longer than 20 years ago. The venues and sound equipment and such can be updated but there’s no reason why great music made 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago shouldn’t be played on a cruise ship or in any venue. I’ll agree with you that the pizza looked horrible and that’s a miss. The art on the Infinity is Celebrity art. It’s what is to be expected on any of their ships. Your review didn’t talk about mix and mingling and live music. Whether it is to dance, play sports, trivia, that’s something that’s a standout on the Infinity vs. the Edge ships in particular., because it has better lounges and spaces for it I remember the Constellation and Millennium when they were brand new and believe it or not, that doesn’t seem that long ago. They’re old ships now but they are still modern, modern being they have balconies and internet and modern lighting and navigation and such.

  • I went deaf on a Celebrity Solstice cruise after getting a norovirus. My virus started in my stomach and settled in my ear. By the time we got to St. Martin’s I was deaf. I was later treated at one of the best hospitals in the country but they were unable to restore my hearing. While receiving steroid injections through my ear drum, something occurred and I ended up with intense debilitating tinnitus that has caused me to lose my job and basically life as I once knew it. My advice to everyone out there is to never ever take a cruise. These vessels are petri fishes for germs. Take my advice, cruises are a lot of fun but in all honestly, they aren’t worth it. Just for the record, Celebrity Cruise Line did nothing for me and never compensated me for what occurred.
