Where are offshore yachts built?
Offshore yachts are built at two yards in Taiwan.
I remember being impressed with the first Offshore yacht that I eyeballed more than a dozen years ago. My attention had been directed to the 48-footer by a captain friend who had years of experience cruising in the Bahamas, managing the helm of a large custom motoryacht. As is the case with most watermen, he had spent a good bit of his professional career dreaming of the perfect boat and the Offshore 48 was on his short list. The 48 appealed to others as well and 141 were delivered during the boat’s production from 1984 to 2001. My interest in Offshore has never waned and I was anxious to inspect the builder’s latest offering-the 64 Voyager.
Offshore Yachts was the brainchild of Richard O. Hunt. When the U.S. government was exploring new methods of building boats following World War II, Hunt helped pioneer the use of laminated fiberglass for the Navy. By 1948, he had successfully applied his knowledge of fiberglass to the production of pleasure craft.
When boaters pulled back on the throttles in the 1980s, he shifted production to Taiwan, building the efficient William Crealock designed 48. Today, Hunt’s son Robert is at the helm, and the focus remains on serious cruisers. Offshore is strong on the West Coast but the builder has delivered boats all over the world and Offshore West, its largest dealer, has a new sales office in Dania, Florida. This is where.

Why are yachts built in Netherlands?
Part of the reason for the dominance of Dutch yacht builders in the superyacht industry stems from Holland’s prestigious history of boat building, which stretches back centuries and was perfectly poised to make the shift to constructing luxury yachts during the 20th century. The word ‘yacht’ originally comes from the Dutch word ‘jacht’, meaning hunt.
Some of the towering names of the yachting world have emerged from Holland, with the great heritage yards Amels, Hakvoort, Royal Huisman, De Vries and Royal Van Lent more recently joined by other outstanding Dutch yacht builders such as Heesen, Vitters, and Oceanco.
Dutch shipyards are heralded not only for their world-class build quality, high tech yards, and innovation, but are also renowned for reliability in finishing projects on time and on budget. With Dutch shipyards producing many fully-custom ‘one-off’ yachts, many of the yachts launched from Holland’s shipyards are extremely iconic and often win international awards.
Which country builds the best yachts?
NORTHERN EUROPE. The Northern European countries are especially known for building fully custom and semi-custom motor and sailing yachts. The Netherlands and Germany top the yachting industry for delivering yachts over 50m with large volume and a high value. German builders Lürssen, Abeking & Rasmussen and Nobiskrug deliver full-custom yacht projects, while Dutch builders like Amels/Damen Yachting, Heesen and Moonen build high-end semi-custom yachts based on model platforms. In the full custom category, Feadship, Oceanco and Royal Hakvoort specialize in the construction of full-custom motor yachts, while Royal Huisman delivers made-to-measure sailing yachts. Both custom and semi-custom yachts built in Northern Europe tend to keep a far higher resale value on the brokerage market. Thanks to their high-quality finish and extreme levels of customization, it’s fair to say that these yachts are akin to floating works of art.
Among Northern Europe’s production series yards, Sunseeker, Princess Yachts and Pearl Yachts offer motor yachts between 17m and 40m. These directly compete with Southern European yacht builders. Among the Mediterranean countries, Italy and Turkey are the two main producers for semi-custom and production series yachts up to 50m. Most Italian-built yachts are made from GRP and often form part of a branded series for yards, examples of which are Sanlorenzo, Custom Line, Ferretti, Benetti, Arcadia Yacht, Maiora, Falcon Yachts and Amer Yachts.
ITALY. When it comes to speed, Italian builders, such as AB Yachts, Tecnomar, Azimut, Mangusta, Leopard Yachts, Riva and Pershing, excel in planing and open vessels. But over the past decade, a flurry of new yacht builders has entered the market delivering lager yachts and more customizable options that rival heritage builders like Baglietto, Codecasa and ISA Yachts. Perini Navi remains one of the most exclusive sailing yacht builders offering performance and style, but when it comes to innovative design solutions, Columbus Yachts, Tankoa, Cantiere delle Marche and the revival of Admiral brought have risen through the pack.

The vessel was designed by the late Carl Schumacher, designer of the popular Alerion Express series, the Express 37 and two Oyster Lightwaves. The vessel is built in Mainland China by Hanshen Yacht Building Company, also a builder for Passport Yachts, another quality boat builder. The Outbound and Passport are proof that quality boats can indeed be successfully built in mainland China.
After the success of the 46-footer, 52- and 56-foot versions of the Outbound were commissioned. The 52 was designed by Tim Kernan; the 56 was designed by German Frers. The 46 is the only boat in the series designed as an aft cockpit. Overall the fit and finish of the joinery and laminations are considered to be well above average, even in the out-of-site less traveled areas.
Cockpit: Not too wide, deep with a large single wheel with a large hard dodger to hide under and help buffer the outside environment’s effect on the vessel interior. Several images show traditional dodgers installed. The hard dodger may be an option or introduced on later models.
Who are the biggest yacht builders in the Netherlands?
In the Netherlands, the four major super yacht builders are: Feadship, Heesen, Damen Yachting (formerly Amels) and Oceanco. This points to the trend of ever larger and more luxurious superyachts.
Although a super yacht stands out in the average port, it seems almost impossible to find out who owns it. This is due to the fact that super yachts are generally purchased by companies and not under a billionaire’s own name. Pointer decided to lift a piece of the veil and compiled a list of owners. Some of the highlights of this list are presented below.

Is Jeff Bezos yacht still in the Netherlands?
Running the yacht will cost Amazon founder Jeff Bezos $25 million a year. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Jeff Bezos’ superyacht was quietly moved out of the Dutch shipyard where it was built, according to the German magazine Der Spiegel.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Jeff Bezos’ superyacht was quietly moved out of the Dutch shipyard where it was built, according to the German magazine Der Spiegel. No bridge was dismantled to move the mega yacht, which was constructed at an estimated cost of $500 million by yachting firm Oceanco. No crowds milled around to catch a glimpse of the vessel being towed, just as no protesters threw eggs at it – as had earlier been threatened.
For the unversed, the controversy around the 417-foot yacht began when Oceanco requested the city of Rotterdam to temporarily dismantle a historic bridge so the vessel could be moved. The yacht, built for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is too big to pass under the iconic Koningshaven Bridge, which dates from 1878 and was rebuilt after being bombed by the Nazis in 1940 during World War II.
Locals protested fiercely plans to dismantle the bridge, with thousands also planning a protest to pelt the superyacht with rotten eggs if the city of Rotterdam went ahead with the dismantling of the iconic structure.
