Best deal? I actually found my husband at TJMaxx! We met while working together in a store in MA. We’ve been married 28 years. My kids call it the mothership. Tip of my own – if you find something there that you love, buy it! Chances are when you go back, it won’t be there. Especially with items you need to match such as drapery – I needed 4 panels to cover my living room window so I took everything I needed right away while it was in stock. With their 30-day return policy, you’re better to buy the item and see if you like it or if it suits your decor – if it doesn’t, it’s easy to return in less than a month. Additionally, don’t be stuck on buying matchy matchy sets! Sheet sets already come with fitted sheet, top sheet and 2 standard pillow cases so select a different color for the shams or duvet cover – no need in having everything monotone. Also, since the store gets daily shipments Monday to Friday, you might go back a few days later and find something that would coordinate perfectly. The store usually carries the same brands – Pure Living Bamboo, Kate Spade, Perry Ellis, Hilfiger, etc so don’t panic right away if you love a particular brand like this and don’t see it one day – chances are the beans will have more in-store selection in stock again in a few days or a few weeks. Keep in mind that some stores stock more of one item than a nearby store. The store a town away, stocks lots of the “Skinny Girl” brand coffee flavours and drapery while the store in my town has more pet supplies and luggage. The store on the other side of my town has more children’s clothes and kitchen ware. Supply varies based on shopper’s habits in the store’s immediate trading area and it’s square footage in the retail space.

I am here in Calabasas California. In a neighbor city of WESTLAKE Village we have a very small TJ MAXX with a Runway Section . Did not know what it was till I saw Heather Locklear there at near closing time shopping there. The employees made comment on how she ONLY goes straight there to mens; often VERY late. I asked about that men’s section. They told me about deals, actual labels (PURPLE) diff, etc. Got a Polo by Ralph Lauren lambskin jacket for $269-original price $899, leather Tom Ford pants $229-orginal price $569. PURPLE LABELS are the key.

Hello everyone, as an employee of TJ Maxx, I just wanted to point out a few things. It might be a little bit of an exaggeration to say you can haggle on prices. Anything labeled “As Is” is typically labeled like that to let associates know that that is the final price for the item and it has already been markdown for any associated issues. If you find something damaged and not marked down, there is a spreadsheet held behind the counter that dictates what price it can be reduced to. It’s possible depending on the item, damage, and people involved that you might be able to get something like $2 below this if you’re going to buy it and get it out of the store. However, this is really an exception to the rule rather than the rule, so as a cashier I ask for everyone to not expect this as a given when at cash out. In regards to the return policy, you’re absolutely right about the extended return policy at the end of the year. Just to clarify a bit more though, typical return policy is within 30 days with receipt back on method of payment, over 30 days with receipt is store credit with tax, over 90 days with receipt is store credit no tax. As for no receipt but we can identify the item in our system you get store credit, though in CT it’s law that you lose tax on the transaction, but I’m not sure about elsewhere. And just for fun, I want to explain the red tag bonus content at the end. In the case of the white shirt, I can see on the tag that the style number starts with 56 and can’t read the rest.

I was explained by the corporation that they bid on their merchandise from pallets that have been put on auction among several stores including Ross, Burlington etc. a lot of their merchandise still have labels from places like Macy’s, Dillards and I’ve seen Nordstrom and Neiman tags too. Some of these stuff were over manufactured for theses stores and ended up in auction. Explained by the corporation in a study I had to do.

That last bit about bedding and not finding matching items literally made me laugh remembering what happened to me several years ago. I found a beautiful Ralph Lauren comforter and 1 matching fitted sheet. There are several TJ Maxx stores around our area. Over the next few months I went to other stores and managed to pick up the flat sheet, dust ruffle, pillow cases, and 1 pillow sham. About 3 months after finding everything except the 1 additional sham we took a little road trip. Along the way we saw a TJ Maxx so I stopped, ran in and YES they had the pillow sham I needed. I was so excited. A few days after returning home, I got out all the pieces, ready to transform my bedroom. Just one problem. It had taken so long to accumulate everything (total about 6 months) I really no longer liked or wanted it. I had kept all receipts so I took everything to the closest TJ Maxx and returned it all! The clerk was exceptionally nice and I told her that the next person who really liked this pattern would at least get all pieces at once. We laughed about it, I got my refund, and left. I now make sure I can get everything at once so this doesn’t happen again.😊👍

Coming from HomeGoods: 1) TJX sequels their stock..meaning that if you see something in July, you will probably see it again next July. 2) the tags at HG have the month/yr listed on the tag, so you know when it came into the store. If you see two items that are the same and onw of them is marked down, you should check the dates on the tag. It likely means that they have had one for three months and one that is newer. 3)Markdowns happen every two to three months. The best time to take advantage of markdowns is early January and Late Summer. 4)The red tags have a 4 digit number followed by a letter. I can’t speak to the meaning of the “M” shown in the article as HG and TJMaxx have different rules on some things…but the I stands for Initial. This means that the item has only undergone the first round of markdowns. The S stands for Subsequent. This is the second round of markdowns. Once the item hits subsequent, they most likely won’t mark it down any more. 5) Seasonal items will get the initial markdown, then the subsequent markdown, and then get zeroed out and trashed. So if you want the seasonal item, you better grab it. 6) That actually goes for anything…if you see it, you better grab it. It’s better to buy it and return it than you think it’s going to be there when you come back. 7) If you see an item without a price, find something similar and take both up to the cash register. That way you don’t have to wait for a price check.

Hi Marshall’s cashier here, the bargaining thing ONLY works if the damaged item you found does not have a marked down tag already. Unless you can prove there is a new issue with the product, we can only apply a 10% markdown each time. I’ve had people come up to me and try to bargain more and more and then bring up my coordinator and bargain with them and waste time in line. We can’t give more than 10% off at a time. Also if you see something with a yellow tag, it means it does not go any lower and we will just throw it away (mark out) if it is returned or given a new reason to mark down. As for the two same items with different prices, look at the u line code above the price. If they have different codes we can’t match the price. Loved working at Marshall’s but people definitely got too comfortable yelling at teenagers just trying to do their jobs.

One of the things I found in TJ Maxx is sometimes you will find two exact items with different prices and the explanation as told to me by the store manager is it often depends when it comes in, as the first item has been there longer they will mark it down to get it sold to make room for newer shipments, even though the same exact item may come in a newer shipment it will have a higher price due to it being nu-stock

I used to work at tj maxx def find out what day your store receives its shipment!!! Now you DO NOT want to go on the day the truck arrives cuz the truck can come at any time during that day, they have to hang up all clothes, add sensors, and they also need time to put it out on the sales floor so I recommend going a day or two after the day the truck comes!!!! If you go the day after ask an employee working the sales floor if the entire truck has been put out on the salesfloor yet or is there stuff in the back to be put out still!!!! So typically home toys and beauty goes out alot faster and before clothes since clothes needs hung and sensored!

Thanks for the informative article, although I have stopped at TJMaxx and Marshall’s before you were born. My favorite snag from TJMaxx was in Charlotte NC. I found a purple tagged, gorgeous Italian lace blouse with invisible zipper in the back. Someone had stripped the zipper, leaving it impossible to untangle much less try on. The original TJMaxx price was over $200. marked down to $5 on clearance. I have seen similar lace items in Italy and knew that it was going home with me. I bought a new invisible zipper for $14. and took it to a local person to repair. I invested $20. the seamstress charged $5. but I gave her $20. So, $40. for a drop dead gorgeous blouse was an amazing deal. Never pass up something that needs a repair. Most times you still come out ahead.

I live in the suburbs of Houston Texas, and I used to get designer labels at my ritzy store, the prices were comparable to the 70% of the mayor designer prices. I have worked very upscale stores all my life, the problem is that many times you could get better prices if you waited for the designer final sale than the T. max or Marshall’s.

I worked P/T at TJMaxx for 5 years. After January inventory, around 1/7 and after, are yellow tag markdowns. And right before school starts in the fall. They get some amazing deals. One year I found a beautiful coat in my size hanging on the end of some clearance pajamas. I checked online. It was on clearance at Nordstrom for $220, regularly $450. I got it for $25. It was in perfect condition. The best deal I ever found was an Alaïa purse. I didn’t know the brand, but it looked expensive, smelled like good leather and was made in Paris. I went online. It was a $2,000 purse. It had been returned to our store from a runway store. Their original price was $259. It was marked down to $59. I even went to the manager to make sure it wasn’t a mistake. She said it’s mine for $59, plus my discount. We used to carry good watches but not lately. They’re a better price than anywhere, Costco, Amazon. One year I got a Movado Museum watch for my husband for $89 final clearance. Those were all authentic. I learned something new. I did not know some of the designer clothing are knockoffs. I’ll need to check them more carefully next time I shop. Their jams, jellies, olives, gourmet foods are a really good deal. So are cosmetics, health aids and beauty products. At least half price and sometimes 75% less, even on high end things. Generally, women’s undergarments are very good prices. With yellow tag items, keep the receipt and keep the tags on until you’re sure you don’t need them. Jewelry returns always require receipts.

My hot tip is to that if you’ve had your eye on something, ask an employee to manually scan it to see if it’s on clearance (or better clearance!). You pay the price on the tag, and markdowns are done manually, so it’s easy for things to get missed. My personal rule is that if I’ve seen it there before and it’s pricey, I ask, even if it’s already on clearance. This applies to other discount stores that use a sticker system, too.

I used to work in T.J. Maxx, and I want to clarify something. Bargaining: you can bargain ANY ITEM in the store as long as it has some type of imperfection. HOWEVER – if you see a manually written “as is” sign on it, T.J. Maxx will not let you bargain. They usually write “as is” to indicate to themselves and the storeworkers that that’s the lowest price that particular item will go for.

Soon-to-be ex-TJMaxx cashier here for some insider tips! – Different stores and regions get their products differently! For example at my store, we get a truck of products every day except Sunday! If you are nice about it, you can always ask an employee or manager what days trucks usually arrive! – When you see a regular price on one item and the other, same item has a clearance sticker, look at the black numbers across the top. If they are the exact same, they are both on clearance and one must have been missed. It’s hard to make sure that all the tags are scanned when people are still shopping, of course! However, if the numbers is different, then one may be on clearance but the other isn’t! A variety of factors goes into if a product is on clearance or not (how long it’s been in the store, different locations where they were picked up from, etc etc). Two items could be the same, but they are different because they are a different style number in the system! – You can return things no matter how long you’ve had them as long as you have the TJMaxx tag still on it or when it is! Within 30 days w/receipt = refund the way you originally paid (checks have 10 days). Within 30 days w/o receipt = merchandise credit (requires an ID of some form). Past 30 days with or without a receipt = gift card. This could change post-Covid however, I’m not sure. – If you are interested in working at TJMaxx, you get a 10% discount card that you can use at any TJMaxx or sister store as long as you are employed!

Pro Tip: If you see something you want *BUY IT RIGHT NOW!!!* Do not wait!!! It will be gone forever!!! You can always return an item within 30 days if you decide you don’t want it. But if you’re shopping & you think to yourself, well I like this but I’m not really sure if I want it so I’m going to think about it & come back later – DON’T DO IT! The item will most likely be gone & you won’t be able to find another one anywhere ever again. Trust me!!! Just buy it now!!!

I bought a rug at TJMaxx recently. I was wrapped nicely in a roll. The price was $28. I went back a few weeks later and found the exact same rug (except for pattern) for $25 and $24. But, these were not in wrapped rolls. But, they were the same brand and size. So of course, I returned that more expensive carpet and bought the cheaper one. Their prices on Sterling Silver Catholic religious jewelry is amazing. Many Catholics know this though, so you need to shop frequently to score the best items.

I work at Winners/Marshalls in Canada. I’m forbidden to talk about the tips/tricks of the job on social media. But as a consumer browsing the store, I notice that you I sometimes find high-end/more expensive ballgowns found only at the high socioeconomic status area West Vancouver store in more suburban areas where I live. As us consumers know, we can return clothes to either Winners or Marshalls (or home stuff to Winners/Marshalls/Home Sense) regardless of the location in Canada. So, you could even see a ballgown from the West Vancouver store all the way across the country in PEI or on Vancouver Island in Nanaimo, for example.

I buy most of my clothing at TJMax. I’ve been lucky with bedding too. It’s great for kitchen items. I have learned to be careful not to buy too much. For example, the clothing is so inexpensive I have too many t-shirts. It’s a fast fashion danger zone. When I was buying clothes for an Alaskan trip I found things much cheaper than sporting goods stores and just as good. They also have great stocking stuffers.

I do not like this trend of allowing pets in stores, especially ones that sell food items. Some people are extremely allergic, for one thing…and in spite of the owner’s thinking that their pet is harmless, keep in mind that about 50 people are killed each year by dogs, frequently pet dogs killing a child. My elderly friend was attacked in a park by a dog who pulled the leash from its owner’s hand. $8,000 worth of anti-rabies shots. This was in June of 2021, and the health department said they had already had several incidents that year.

I worked at tj Maxx a few years ago. Truck days are different for every store, but usually the same for stores that are near each other. Truck days usually increase towards Christmas also. When I worked there we stocked during the day, but now the store I worked at stocks shipment at night. Since I no longer work there, I don’t know if that is due to sales volume or something else. It is true that the best markdowns are in august and January, that’s yellow ticket time. There is one store in my area that has a runway section, it is located in Mt Pleasant, SC. Which is located just outside Charleston and is considered an upscale area. I honestly don’t find clothing that is all that great imo there, however I love going there to look for purses, shoes, and jewelry. They almost always have more at that particular TJ.

I’m sooo happy I found your website!! This past Friday I found an irregular wood piece that had a sale price of $4. When the cashier saw this she ripped it off and said it’s not the actual price! She was adamant about the $24.99 price that was under the clearance $4 price. I even asked to speak with a manager and this manager agreed with the cashier. This cashier claimed that they had new arrivals of the same piece but when I went to the back to see if I could find another one there was non in sight. The double wood piece is irregular. It looks a little gray instead of brown. I even told this cashier but she still charged me regular price with the manager backing her up

The closest TJ Maxx to me is in Deland. I really enjoy going to different TJ Maxx in my area. I noticed when going to TJ Maxx in the rich area the shoe selection is better. My aunt told me when I was younger that Michael Kors purses aren’t the same quality as Macy’s. (She used to work at Macy’s.) Thank you for this article!

If you sew, you can use the sheets as fabric and make something, even pillow cases. Yes the more expensive items like runway, you normally have a much better price savings, because it’s a what the market will buy situation, so if you are someone who buys more expensive designer clothes, not everyone shopping at TJ maxx looking for a deal is going to be ok with paying large prices.

Im in Utah, but was in downtown Denver the other weekend. I went to a Ross and as I was shopping two ladies across the rack from me were talking about how much better the selection was where we were. I said I was just thinking the same thing, and asked where they were from. They were from Louisiana, so we laughed and I joked about how all the good stuff goes to Denver and then what doesnt sell in Denver gets sent to Utah. 😂😂 This article basically confirms that.😂

I can’t buy a candle without a wick. But I can wait till January/April/August/December when prices are slashed to half and half off again. Their back rooms are crammed with stuff they need to get to the floor so they need to get what’s out there on these sales. ALL stores best to shop is Tuesday to Thursday. Monday, Friday and weekends as those days are when ppl get paid. Best hours: when they open the aisles are neat all best sales out there until 11 a.m. I found a name brand jacket original price $99 had the yellow tag for $5.00!!! The state of Virginia has two RunWay collection assessable stores. One in Arlington near Washington D.C., and the other is here in Virginia Beach. We have a population of 1.4 million people in Virginia Beach, and rank in the top 5 for tourism in the USA (with on average 19 million visitors a year). We also have the largest Navy base in the world, so maybe it’s actually surprising we only have one RunWay store… Haha.

Yes ! I have encountered knock offs, so disappointing because the items don’t last and are not the same quality as the authentic brand. For e.g. I bought a Kate Space purse that literally was falling apart after a month. I was so disappointed. I will only buy discounted designer purses from Nordstrom Rack now. I still buy other things but just not designer purses,shoes anymore or certain clothing items anymore.

About that greenies, don’t forget u pay for shipping. And at least u don’t have to wait weeks on end for dog treats. That’s not a secret it’s a fact. Either spent way more then 20 dollars online and wit a week or pay just about 20 dollars and get it that second. 🤗 As a tjmaxx worker a lot of these are interesting but u really should fact check yourself. 🙂 Althought the first one u mentioned I’m curious and I work in the fitting room so imma look out for those clothing tags and see …. I’m truly curious about it.

A word about the Compare At prices: Many times, the original tag has the MSRP on it, and it’s far, far higher than the Compare At. There is some kind of maximum percentage over the selling price that they will list as a Compare At, or at least that’s how it was explained to me when I worked at Homegoods. I can’t count the number of clothing items I’ve bought for an absolute steal compared to the price on the original tag. Huge endorphin rush! I go straight for the clearance section. I don’t even look at the full-price sections even though prices are phenomenal there, too. Don’t forget their shoes, beauty, and gourmet foods. Find the Clearance aisle for every section and always check them first. Same for Homegoods and Marshall’s.

I forgot. Their designer sunglasses – Calvin Klein, Tahari and others, are all about $10. Of course Ray Bans are more. And buy early. You’ll find coats and gloves in October, but they’re sold out in January. They generally put out 2-3 months ahead of season. Their home and holiday decorations are generally the same as Homegoods and pretty good prices and quality. Great selection of cleaning products. No testers on fragrances because they’re always getting in different inventory. It’s a lot cheaper than retail and it is returnable. Please don’t ask people to open up a sealed fragrance or open it yourself. Same with cosmetics. If someone tore open a cosmetic box, our store made us throw the brand new product in the trash. My biggest pet peeve was people sending their kids to play (tear up) the toy section while they shopped or leaving shopping carts in the parking lot. They don’t have people to round up carts. And if you drop some clothing on the ground, please pick it up and put it back on the hanger. The employees aren’t maids or butlers. And don’t pul out singles of half a dozen shoes to try on one foot and leave them scattered on the floor for employees to guess where they go. Rehang your clothes after you use the dressing room and bring them to the attendant. It’s usually an elderly person working it. A lot of the work is physically draining for evening shift. Like when 30 pairs of boots are pulled out of boxes and left on the floor at Christmas time. Store closes at 11:00 pm, you’ll be picking up for everything dropped since opening, until – 11:45 pm.

I was at T.J.MAXX yesterday and looking at bedding. I found many sheets that matched the comforters that matched. Like anything at T.J.MAXX buy it when your there because it’s never promised to be there the next time you go back. Unlike say Kohl’s that has a bigger inventory of a certain pattern or look. Even though the camera never completely focuses on the shirt, at 11:58 after perusal it frame by frame for an embarrassingly long amount of time, it looks like that red tag was in fact ripped off of a different item. The department numbers are different! people try to do stuff like that often and we are told to pay attention to if it seems like the deal it too good to be true, because it probably is

I work at a Marshall’s and we’ve had to ban people from putting certain brands (Hello Kitty, Rae Dunn) on hold because people get viscerally upset seeing it behind the counter and will yell at cashiers. There’s a lady that calls just about every single day to ask about specific items from these brands and tries to put them on hold. I saw her carrying 4 hello kitty blankets and when a child asked if she could buy one, she basically chewed her out. A CHILD. Just the worst kind of people.

My husband and I have been able to find Le Cruset and All-Clad items at TJ Maxx/Home Goods which has been AMAZING. My husband is a small business owner and I’m in education. We don’t have a ton of money, so being able to access these brands at an affordable-to-us price is amazing. I HATE that people “flip” these things for profit.

Honestly this TikTok trend just reflects a trend in larger society, from scalpers buying up coveted concert tickets and overcharging so much that rows of seats are empty, to influencers thrifiting at Goodwill and causing prices to raise so now the less fortunate are priced out of Goodwill, to landlords buying up houses at reasonable prices just to “flip” them and put them back on the market so now most people can no longer afford to buy houses…

As someone that works at TJMaxx, I can understand the addiction people have to shopping there. It really is a gamble what we get, and there’s never any gaurantee that item will come again. So I get the high from finding something great. I do. But I hate the idea of someone shopping and upselling items like this. It kills the bliss and excitement for people who need to discount shop and can’t because some “Mary Joe” decided to buy those nice discounted items as a way to make money for themselves.

As someone who worked for the TJmaxx companies us employees wanted so badly to ban filming inside the store because some people even go out of the way to make a mess in the store just to get their content and also didn’t seem fair for the people who took the time of out of their day to come in person.

I used to work with TJ Maxx and a lot of people don’t know that if you want a product that isn’t there, you can get it checked to see if it’s in the store have it in inventory. If it’s at another store, you can get it transferred to our store when they have another shipment. I kid you not, it’s much cheaper to do that than get a personal shopper.

I currently work at TJ Maxx and have worked at Marshalls previously. The employee discount is only 10% and on select weekends throughout the year its a 20% discount. Still very crazy to me that people do this. I think the employees who are “personal shoppers” would get in trouble if found out. Ruining the search/fun for actual shoppers . Weird behavior

I used to work for Marshalls and I also worked at TJ maxx. There were actually employees doing this back in the early 2000’s. Once the company caught on, they were all fired! Employees were also fired for holding/hiding merchandise and for taking discarded merchandise from the dumpster. But this is being allowed???

I bought a lighted gingerbread house last week from home goods. Checked on Mercari and people are selling it for double the price. It’s beyond disgusting. I remember before social media when only older people shopped tj max and Marshall’s. I found so many great Christmas items there during that time. Social media and greed ruin everything. People need to stop grifting and get actual jobs.
