How long does it take to get off a cruise ship at port of Call?

How long does it take to disembark a cruise ship?. Disembarking all passengers from a cruise ship takes a few hours, depending on the cruise ship’s size. From the time your color-coded departure group is called, you can be off the ship in 15 minutes. What often takes the most time is getting down to the appropriate deck with your carry-on bags (or all of your bags if you opted for self disembarkation), since the elevators are always crowded on the final morning. Occasionally, an issue with clearing the ship delays passenger disembarkation and can create lines. That’s why you should never book a flight too early on disembarkation day.

Do I need to tip crew members before I disembark?. Cruise lines have individual policies when it comes to tipping, and you should familiarize yourself with those policies before you start your trip. Most lines will automatically add tips to your final shipboard bill; some (like luxury lines, whose gratuities are included in the cruise fare) require no tipping. In many cases, you’ll have the option to prepay gratuities before your trip. You are welcome to give additional tips for outstanding service at any time during your cruise. For more on cruise ship tipping procedures, read What to Expect on a Cruise: Tipping Crewmembers on a Cruise.

How can I prepare for my flight home?. For starters: Do not schedule your flight home right after your estimated cruise disembarkation time. You should always budget several hours to both disembark the ship, reach the airport and deal with checking in, checking luggage for your flight, and clearing security. Many cruise ships have internet centers where you can pay to check in for your flight and print boarding passes. Note that some countries, such as Costa Rica, levy a departure tax on everyone leaving from the airport. These taxes are often payable in cash only. Make sure you read up on departure procedures so you have the correct payment upon arrival at the airport and check with your airline in advance to find out whether or not the tax is factored into the airfare.

Is it better to board early or late on a cruise?

Quicker boarding process. Arriving at the terminal early means that you will not have to deal with the later crowds. While the check-in process is pretty straightforward, there are a couple steps that you have to take prior to being let on the ship, including checking your travel documents and going through security.

Even if you get to the terminal at your designated check-in time, the lines will start to get long later in the afternoon. It may take you twice as long to get through the check-in process!

You can, of course, speed up checking in by having all of your documents ready and completing all steps of the online check-in process. Coming prepared with pre-printed luggage tags means that you will not have to spend time giving your stateroom information to the porter.

How early can I arrive at the cruise port?

Your cruise line will notify you of the best time to arrive at the port, usually between late morning and mid-afternoon, and provide you with a window of several hours. You are welcome to arrive at any time within that period.

Finding your boarding documents, which were either shipped to you or printed out at home, as well as your identification – a passport, a driver’s license, and a birth certificate – and keeping them close by should be your first priority when you arrive at the cruise terminal. You’ll need to provide your cruise documents and walk through security to enter the terminal. There will be an x-ray machine you must go through, and your carry-on will need to be scanned, but this is a less stringent process than at the airport. (For instance, you probably won’t need to take off your shoes.) After that, a sizable open area with roped-off lines and check-in counters will be yours to enter. Suite customers and former passengers with high status will often enter a shortened line or separate waiting area, while other passengers join the main line. Cruise lines officials will be on hand to advise you to the proper line.

Generally speaking, if lines are short (which they are when boarding later), anticipate spending approximately 15 minutes on the boarding process, or at most about 45 to 60 minutes if lines are long (usually when boarding earlier). How long you have to wait to board a ship depends greatly on when you arrive at the cruise port.

Nowadays, cruise lines such as MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean Cruises, among others, board passengers using one of two methods, and the type you experience will be determined by your particular cruise line. Your particular cruise line will determine the type you see.

What is the earliest time to board a Carnival cruise?

Boarding begins roughly between 10 and 11 a.m., depending on the ship’s schedule and how long it takes everyone from the last cruise to debark. Most cruise ships require all passengers to be on board no fewer than two hours before the scheduled departure time, which is almost always in the late afternoon or evening.

The best time to board a cruise ship is obviously when there are few lines and short waits. The trick is knowing when that will be.

Unfortunately, it can vary from port to port and ship to ship, but I prefer arriving in the early afternoon, usually around 1 or 2 p.m.

What happens if your cruise ship leaves without you?

Make travel arrangements.. If you miss the ship, you’ll have to either meet it in a subsequent port of call or call it a wash and head home. Your cruise line, travel agent or travel insurance provider might be able to help you make the plans; otherwise, you’ll have to make arrangements on your own. Either way, you’ll be responsible for any costs incurred. (This is where photocopies of your credit cards will come in handy if you’ve left the real thing onboard; it’s also why we advise all cruisers to travel with passports, even if all that’s required for boarding is a driver’s license and birth certificate.)

Retrieve your belongings.. If you decide to return home instead of rejoining the sailing at the next port, you’ll have to address the fact that your belongings are still aboard the ship. The cruise line can usually have everything shipped to you, but just know that it might not be cheap.

Try to relax.. Even if you find yourself stranded, remember: You’re still on vacation. If you have time to kill after you’ve formulated a game plan, make the most of it by exploring the destination you find yourself in or locating an out-of-the-way place to try local fare. Stuck in port overnight? That’s the time to experience the nightlife you miss when the ship sails away.

Will cruise ship leave you at port?

Find a port agent. A cruise ship will leave passengers behind on shore if they arrive back at the ship too late, but the ship staff has procedures in place to help you.

If you are not on the ship and the departure time is drawing near, a security officer may enter your cabin and open your safe to locate your passport, driver’s license, credit cards or any other important stuff you have left there. They’ll also collect your medication and any other necessities you will need because the ship is about to strand you on shore, and you will need to make your own way home.

What time do cruise ships usually leave port?

This scheduling is because cruise ships usually run a tight schedule and may have people disembarking and embarking on the same day at the same cruise port. Guests usually disembark from their cruise in the morning – around 10:00 am. This gives the crew a few hours to clean and ensure everything is ready for the next guests.

Some cruise lines will ask you to pick a time to embark in advance. This is usually just a time that you would guess to be arriving for embarkation to help control traffic – it’s not set in stone, and you’re not bound to it.

Check-in vs. Boarding. Along with knowing how early you can board a cruise ship, it’s essential to understand the difference between checking into your cruise and boarding your cruise.

You will typically be asked to vacate your cabin by 9 a.m. or earlier on disembarkation day so that the crew can prepare for the next passengers.

If you leave any items behind, it’s difficult to recover them once you’re off the ship. Do a careful check of closets, drawers and even under the bed to make sure you have packed everything.

Don’t forget the bedside table drawers, the very back of the shelves and the safe. If you are traveling with kids, also look for small stuffed animals or other toys hidden in any linens crumpled on the bed.

Don’t take the bathrobe. If you are in a cabin that comes with a bathrobe and slippers, the slippers are typically yours to keep. However, you will be charged if you walk off with the bathrobe. The same rule applies to pool or beach towels stored in your cabin.
