The Uniworld River Cruise offers a variety of clothing options for guests to ensure a comfortable and stylish journey. Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended for the journey, while appropriate footwear and layering are also essential. For evenings, resort-type wear is suitable, but shorts are not allowed. Men may need to bring one sport jacket for dressier venues.
Onboard a Uniworld ship, guests are asked to dress in smart casual daytime wear, but for evenings, they will want to dress up slightly. Resort-type wear is great for dinner, but Uniworld advises guests to pack for a range of weather conditions. Smart shirts and trousers for men and equivalent for women are suitable for most dinners, and a jacket and similar for the gala dinner is encouraged.
For European destinations like Egypt, casual and cool attire is recommended, with footwear worn at all times in the dining area. Women should bring Dockers type pants for excursions and a basic black dress for dinner. Elevate your ensemble with a tailored blazer and opt for classic colors like navy or black for timeless style.
Choose outfits that are tasteful and modest, such as cocktail dresses, dress pants with blouses, or smart casual ensembles. Avoid overly casual or provocative outfits. Uniworld advises guests to pack for a range of weather conditions, but there is no strict dress code on-board.

Is a balcony worth it on a river cruise?
I prefer a balcony cabin so that I can relax and enjoy the view and some fresh air. However, I do have clients who decide that they will spend most of their time outside of their room in the shared spaces and would like to make their holiday budget stretch further. They’ll opt for a lower deck cabin with a fixed window. It’s down to personal preference and budget. If finances allow, I highly recommend a balcony option.
It is worth noting that one morning, you could have an incredible view over the river, but the next day, the view could be of a dock wall and your balcony becomes less important. In busy ports, river ships may need to dock next to each other and on one occasion I opened my curtains, and my view was straight into the cabin of a passenger on the adjacent ship. The view from the deck can’t be obscured by another ship as they are all the same height.
When I travelled on Uniworld Joie de Vivre, I had a stateroom with a French balcony – the top half of the floor to ceiling window glides down to the halfway point allowing an uninterrupted view and plenty of fresh air to circulate.
Cabin, room, stateroom or suite?. The terminology can vary between river cruise lines. For example, AmaWaterways and Uniworld have Staterooms and Suites. On Scenic river ships, each room is known as a Suite with larger options named Junior Suites or the opulent Royal Suite. Riviera refer to their “wonderfully spacious and luxuriously appointed cabins”.
Can you wear jeans on a river cruise?
Onboard Vibes:Feedback from our guests suggests that the dress code onboard is largely influenced by fellow cruisers. While each line may offer recommendations, enforcement is rare. For daytime and excursions, think shorts or light trousers in warm weather, and jeans with jumpers when it cools down.
Dining Dress Code:Lunch is casual, reflecting your daytime attire. Dinner, however, nudges towards smart casual, with shorts, T-shirts, and jeans generally discouraged. Special events like the Captain’s dinner are perfect for dressing up, though not mandatory. A cocktail dress or a jacket (tie optional) can elevate your evening.
(Me, ready to get off and start exploring all that the Douro has to offer)
Excursion Essentials:Comfort is key. Opt for comfortable walking shoes and clothes suitable for varying terrains. Don’t forget a light, water-resistant jacket and a sun hat for those sunny days. Remember, visits to religious sites may require modest attire; a scarf for covering shoulders is a respectful and easy option.

How to dress on a Uniworld river cruise?
We recommend wearing comfortable, smart-casual clothing both onshore and onboard. We also suggest sturdy walking shoes, as you will do a significant amount of walking on shore excursions, often over cobblestones or uneven terrain. A sun hat, rain gear, and a coat or wrap for chilly evenings are useful items to have. While there is no formal dress code for dining ashore, concerts, special events onboard, etc., men may want to bring a sports jacket and women a cocktail dress or pantsuit. Neckties are optional. Please note that shorts are not allowed at dinner aboard the ship.
For our EXOTICS destinations:These programs are very different from European river programs; attire is more casual due to the region’s warmer temperatures. During the cruise/tour portion of your program, comfortable, lightweight clothing in lighter colors is strongly recommended. We suggest clothing that can be layered, such as a mix of cotton shirts, lightweight knit shirts, sweaters, everyday khakis, slacks, skirts/dresses, walking shorts and sun hats.
Prepare for a variety of weather conditions, depending on your travel season and the regions through which you will be cruising. Layering clothing items is always your best bet, as this allows you to adjust to most temperatures, including artificially maintained temperatures, by removing or adding items throughout the day. Mix/match color schemes work best to help keep baggage light.
Do I have to dress up for formal night on a cruise?
Alternative options to dressing up. Don’t let a dress code scare you off cruising, even if you’re traveling on a line that hosts formal nights. Most cruise lines have relaxed their policies enough so that most travelers will be able to attend a formal night with the clothes they keep in their closet at home—even if it’s a simple request for a collared shirt and a prohibition on jeans at dinner.
Really want to avoid the fancy dress? Remember there’s always the buffet, and room service—casual dressers always have the option to indulge in a night in and wear whatever they please.
