Can you see the northern lights on a Disney cruise to Alaska?

However though it may be possible to spot the northern lights on an Alaskan cruise with Disney Cruise Line, this is still a bit of a rare occurrence that I wouldn’t recommend planning your voyage around. I began my career living and working at sea with itineraries along Alaska’s Inside Passage and over almost a decade I’ve only been able to see the aurora on three occasions while sailing this route. Among the variety of factors that need to come together for a perfect night for an aurora sighting, having clear skies and darkness are very key to increasing the chances depending on the ship’s position – and these cruises unfortunately don’t currently sail any farther north where the odds may be greater.

If there were two members of the Madrigal family from Encanto whose gifts would especially come in handy to help you out, it would be Mirabel’sTía Pepa to clear the clouds away or even Bruno’s foresight to determine the best night to begin looking up. Luckily the folks who specialize in the realm of geophysics do an excellent job of being able to predict when aurora activity is greater and more likely to be seen, and among the more scientifically-minded or scholarly members of the crew we were able to use some fairly reliable aurora forecasts, including one from the University of Alaska Fairbanks to help us plan ahead. In fact, just this past week there was a burst of activity that extended down to areas around Juneaubut unfortunately Alaskan cruising season doesn’t quite start early enough to catch some of these active nights in the spring.

With the itineraries currently available, choosing your voyage carefully and aiming to cruise as close as possible to the end of the season heading into autumn can increase your chances as we have never had any luck seeing the aurora during the summer. Unlike with occasional whale sightings on Alaskan itineraries where your captain may make an announcement for everyone on board to look out Port or Starboard, aurora spotting isn’t something that is communicated to guests unless you encounter a particularly keen Crew Member who’s been studying the forecast but sometimes the residents in certain Ports of Call may give you a heads up if they’re looking forward to a clear night with some activity. When everything aligns and you have the opportunity to see even a faint glow on the horizon to brilliant bands and curtains that seemingly jump around in the night sky, there’s really no other way to describe it beyond something simply magical.

What do you wear for breakfast on a cruise?

As above, so below: mainstream cruise lines don’t have a dress code for breakfast in the dining room. However, we recommend covering your shoulders in the dining rooms, even at breakfast, because some cruisers on Royal Caribbean were turned away for wearing tank tops.

Do I need a heavy coat for an Alaska cruise?

The good news is, you can leave the heavy-duty winter coats and boots at home—easily removable, waterproof layers are best.

Here’s a complete list of what to pack on a cruise to Alaska, from clothing to gear and extras.

Before you bust out the suitcase and start throwing stuff in, consider the weather and how it varies. If you’re cruising the Inside Passage and waterways of Southeast Alaska, expect summertime highs between 50 and 60 degrees, with the occasional 70- or 80-degree day. Spring is chilly and fall is rainy.

How much spending money should you take on an Alaskan cruise?

What Is The Average Amount of Cash to Bring on a Cruise?. Before the Covid pandemic, it was reported most guests bring between $100-$120 in cash per day to be spent on transportation, tips, gifts, food, and shopping.

In a survey of 850 cruisers, 71% stated that they took over $100 per person per day when cruising.

Is Disney Alaska cruise cold?

Even during the prime cruising months of June, July, and August, temperatures are generally fairly mild during this time, with average highs in the 60s and lows in the high 40s and 50s.

  • Ketchikan receives the most rain, with weather conditions becoming progressively drier the farther north you go.
  • Skagway is located in a rain shadow, and as a result, receives very little rain.
  • Anchorage has a low humidity feeling like San Francisco in Spring to Fall and a ski town in the Winter.

Southeast Alaska isn’t far enough north to experience the round-the-clock daylight that happens in other parts of Alaska, but it does have incredibly long, colorful sunsets that linger near the horizon for as much as two hours before the sun finally sinks into the sea. The wind usually dies down during the evening hours, making the smooth-as-glass water the perfect surface for catching the reflections of the sunset.

What to Wear. It isn’t necessary to bring cold weather gear on an Alaskan cruise, but travelers should keep in mind that they’ll be visiting a rain forest.

What to wear for dinner on an Alaskan cruise?

Women can wear a smart dress, skirt, pants, or jeans with a casual top, and men can dress in pants or jeans with a short-sleeve sport shirt.

As for shoewear, the only rule is that flip flops are never allowed during evenings on the ship.

Depending on the length of your cruise, you’ll have one or more formal dinner nights in which you’ll need to adhere to Celebrity Cruises’s “Evening Chic” dress code. For women, the Evening Chic dress code includes cocktail dresses, skirts, pants, or designer jeans with an elegant top. Men will wear pants or designer jeans with a dress shirt, button-down shirt, or sweater, with the option of a sports coat or blazer.

Workout Clothes. During your cruise, you can take advantage of our state-of-the-art fitness center and fun exercise classes. Bring at least one workout outfit in case you want to work up a sweat in between ports of call.

Do I need cash for Alaskan cruise?

We don’t do room service typically or gamble at the casino. So, we basically don’t run into a situation where we would need cash on a ship. If it’s Alaska, credit cards work fine. We’re not huge tourist trap souvenir buyers so we generally don’t need cash on ports in places like Mexico or the Caribbean.

Since this is our first cruise I have no idea. We will have our credit card with us, and plan on using that. But how much CASH USD and Canadian should we bring and in what denominations, I am thinking some small for tipping, and is that OK to be in USD?

In all of our cruises (CAN, Bahamas, Western Caribbean) USD has been accepted in ports. We only spent exact cash in Bahamas and WC so I don’t know how change would be handled, but Canada would only give change in CAD (not a problem, planning a Niagara Falls trip next year so can use it then). We didn’t use a CC in Bahamas, but there was a conversion charge in Mexico and probably Canada too.

Do you usually call your cc company and let them know you will be on a cruise even if it is the US?

Is it too cold to swim on a Disney Alaska cruise?

Tempretures in middle of summer are in their high sixties. Good enough for open swimming pool.

Early May and late September might be chilly but I have seen children in far colder temperatures, enjoying a warm pool., since the water temperature is well maintained to that of most indoor pools.

Do you need cash on an Alaskan cruise?

To be clear, you will not need much cash at all while onboard.

Nearly every transaction on a cruise ship is done with your room keycard, which works just like a credit card. In fact, most cruise lines are cashless and won’t take any for regular purchases.

Your cruise fare covers basic meals, drinks and entertainment. Anything extra, like alcoholic drinks, any add-on activities, the spa or specialty dining, can be purchased ahead of time through packages, or charged to your account.

How much cash should you bring from home?. On average, expect to need more cash for port days than sea days. In fact, you’ll need very little cash on your sea days, but a fair amount for days ashore.

For an average Caribbean cruise, I would recommend having this amount of cash with you:

Are the pools heated on a Disney Alaskan cruise?

Yes, the pools and hot tubs are open onboard – even in chilly Alaska! They are consistently heated to a comfortable temperature and hours are posted on signs at the pools and in the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App. My family packed our swimwear but never actually got in the water during our week onboard. We had so many other things to do and see that it just never happened, but it was an enticing option! It was fun to see the lifeguards bundled up in their warm gear while Guests happily swam or soaked comfortably. The traditional activities of movies on Funnel Vision, trivia, or quiet adult time at the pools remain available even on the Alaska itineraries in this unique setting with spectacular views while you splash.

I recommend that you pack a cover-up or comfortable sweats to go to and from the pools or hot tubs, as the cool air will be quite different than walking around on deck in a tropical destination. Towels are available at all pools, and you’ll also find generous cozy blankets on deck throughout this sailing.

When you need to warm up, there’s plenty of hot cocoa and even mulled wine to sip! Find this specialty spiced adult beverage on Deck 10, forward, on glacier day or at many bars any other time for a cozy treat. Hot cocoa is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on Deck 9 near Cabanas with the other complimentary beverages. Head to any of the bars and lounges, or keep an eye out for a roaming cart, for offerings of various liquors for the cocoa too.

What do you do on a Disney Alaskan cruise?

With the majority of the 7-night cruise itineraries, you will have two days at sea and a day each at the Dawes Glacier, Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. This itinerary provides a great mix of time on both the cruise ship and time exploring Alaska.
