Why is Montauk so famous?

Montauk is a major tourist destination with six state parks. It is particularly famous for its fishing, claiming to have more world saltwater fishing records than any other port in the world. Located 20 miles (32km) off the Connecticut coast, it is home to the largest commercial and recreational fishing fleet in New York state.

Montauk derives its name from the Montaukett tribe, an Algonquian-speaking tribe who lived in the area. In 1614, Dutch explorer Adriaen Block encountered the tribe at Montauk Point, which he named Hoeck van de Visschers, or “Point of the Fishers”. Two decades later, in 1637, the Montauketts sided for their own protection with the New England settlers in the Pequot War in Connecticut. In the aftermath the Montauketts were to sell Gardiners Island. In 1648 what would become the Town of Easthampton (first Maidstone) was sold to settlers by the colony of Connecticut and the colony of New Haven while retaining the lands to the east, from the hills rising above where the first fort stood (Napeague, New York) to Montauk Point. The western boundary of today’s Hither Hills State Park is also known as the 1648 purchase line.(citation needed)

In 1653, the Narragansett-Montaukett War started. Narragansetts under Ninigret attacked and burned the Montaukett village, killing 30 and capturing one of Chief Wyandanch’s daughters. The daughter was recovered with the aid of Lion Gardiner (who in turn was given a large portion of Smithtown, New York in appreciation). The Montauketts, ravaged by smallpox and fearing extermination by the Narragansetts, were provided temporary refuge by white settlers in East Hampton. Many short but famous battles ensued. The skirmishes ended in 1657. Fort Pond Bay derives its name from a Montaukett “fort” on its shore. A deed was issued in 1661 titled “Ye deed of Guift” which granted all of the lands east of Fort Pond to be for the common use of both the indigenous people and the townsmen.

What was the tragedy of Montauk?

FV Pelican was a party boat, or head boat, operating out of Montauk, New York, which capsized on September 1, 1951, killing 45 passengers and crew, including the captain Eddie Carroll.

Pelican was originally constructed as the 42-foot (13m) passenger fishing vessel Bellboy III in 1940 in Brooklyn, New York. The vessel was constructed with an enclosed cabin. At 14 gross register tons, she was not subject to United States Coast Guard regulations and annual inspection, which were required only of vessels more than 15 gross register tons. She was powered by twin 100-horsepower (75kW) Chrysler engines.

At the time of the accident, Pelican was owned by Eddie Carroll, who held a U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license. She operated as a party boat from the Fishangrila Dock at Fort Pond Bay in Montauk, New York, taking customers fishing for the day in the waters around Montauk. The Fishangrila Dock was within walking distance of the Montauk station of the Long Island Railroad. On weekends, the railroad ran “Fisherman’s Special” trains from New York City to Montauk; passengers would exit the train and climb aboard one of the waiting party boats and pay their fare for a day of fishing.

What is the largest yacht club in the United States?

The Detroit Yacht Club The Detroit Yacht Club, founded in 1868, is the largest and one of the oldest most prestigious private Clubs in North America.

The historic Detroit Yacht Club was founded shortly after the Civil War in 1868 and has served as host to over 100 years of U.S. Presidents, local Statesmen, Royalty and the Hollywood elite. It has remained viable through the Great Depression while serving five generations of members and families. The health and vitality of the DYC is evident in the beautifully maintained 1920s Mediterranean-style villa that continues to be the largest yacht club in the United States while being the twelfth oldest.

A small clubhouse and sailing shed were built at the foot of McDougall Street, just south of Jefferson Avenue in the late 1870’s. In the early 1880’s, dissension tore the Club apart concerning the expansion of the Club’s social activities. A faction formed the Michigan Yacht Club in 1882. This caused the membership to revitalize the DYC and elect James Skiffington as the Commodore in 1884. A sail racing schedule was introduced and the DYC was here to stay.

The first clubhouse was erected on Belle Isle in 1891 at a cost of $10,000, with an additional $2,000 spent on furnishings. It was destroyed by fire in 1904. A new clubhouse was erected immediately on the ashes of the old clubhouse.

It’s a record in numerous ways. The highest price for a Hamptons hotel sale had been another deal last year, for the 96-room Marram Montauk. That property traded for barely half as much as the Montauk Yacht Club, which regained its former name after operating as Gurney’s Star Island Resort & Marina in recent years.
