What Steps Does Trump Take To Ensure Security When Traveling?

The U.S. Secret Service, founded in 1865 to combat counterfeiting of U.S. currency after the Civil War, began protecting presidents in 1901 after the assassination of President William McKinley in Buffalo, New York. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has said that if elected again, he would shift resources from federal law enforcement agencies and send top-secret daily briefings about US intelligence and world events. Trump has also said he would implement travel bans on people from certain countries or with certain ideologies, expanding on a policy upheld by the Supreme Court.

Trump is using his legal authority to take Executive action to secure additional resources, including declaring a national border. The Secret Service incurred about $396,000 for temporary duty costs while protecting Trump, Jr., and Eric Trump during three international trips taken in. The former president’s journey from Trump Tower to the Manhattan Criminal Courts Building will be a major security operation involving large numbers of police and other security personnel.

In oral arguments at the Supreme Court, justices questioned how much leeway President Trump has to restrict immigration and whether Trump’s previous comments should be considered. Tax payers pick up the tab for the Secret Services’ travel expenses wherever Donald goes, and the cost is high, since Trump charges the agency for the access it needs to do so.

The legal woes of Donald Trump have cast a new light on the role of federal agents assigned to protect him and other former presidents. The Secret Service is still responsible for protecting Trump and is still charging the agency for the access it needs to do so.
