What Size Uhaul For A Canoe?

The Universal One-Man Canoe Loader is a versatile tool for transporting canoes and kayaks. It allows users to transport canoes from picking them up and carrying them over their heads to using specialized canoe trailers, canoe carts, and vehicle roof racks. The best methods for canoe transport include roof racks, trailers, pickup truck beds, and hiring a moving company like uShip.

To transport a canoe, one should attach the middle hook of one strap to a thwart (canoe) or U-bolt (touring kayaks), twist the strap in a spiral to reduce vibration, and attach the end hook to a secure point. Other options include using a roof rack, loading it into the back of a truck, stuffing it into a van, or hiring a moving company like uShip.

  • Just to clarify, in reference to the 0:21 mark where you point out “hydraulic breaks, if you’re towing it with something that has hydraulic brakes”…..actually the brakes on the trailer are self-contained and work with any vehicle, regardless of that vehicle’s braking or wiring setup. It’s a simple hydraulic surge brake setup where the forward inertia of the trailer, as your tow vehicle slows down, actuates the hydraulic brakes. That’s why it’s such a “gnarly hitch” as you mention later; the majority of that brake system is up around that tongue area. It’s a one-size-fits-all setup that allows the trailer to have brakes to accommodate more weight while still working with any tow vehicle, versus other brake systems that would require a brake controller to be installed on the tow vehicle in order to control the trailer brakes.

  • If you are going to make an equipment article, make sure you are knowledgeable about the equipment. The hitch does not “set down on the ball and you are good to go”. The hitch tightens down on the ball, as tight as you can tighten it, then a spring loaded keeper snaps against the knob and keeps it from unscrewing. The tightness needs to be checked several times during the trip. I hope no one was hurt from learning about this uhaul trailer through your article.
