What Should I Wear To A Sailing Lesson?

For a comfortable sailing experience, it is essential to wear a woolen t-shirt, warm socks, a hoodie, Omni-wick pants, and sailing gloves. Polarized sunglasses may be necessary for protection or performance. On a hot sunny day on a calm lake, ordinary shorts and t-shirt can be fine, along with a buoyancy aid and neoprene shoes. In windy weather, a warm sailing jacket and gloves are necessary.

Sailing clothing varies depending on the location, what, and why you sail. This guide aims to help you avoid bringing the wrong clothes on every sailing trip. It is divided into three parts: essentials for a few days of holiday, gear that is more important for longer-term sailing, and more.

In warm weather, lightweight and breathable clothing, along with sun protection, is key. Opt for moisture-wicking fabrics and wear a wetsuit if learning to sail in a dinghy. A waterproof jacket, sturdy pants, socks, and proper closed-toed shoes are also recommended. A lifejacket, decent raincoat with a hood, waterproof trousers, a jumper or fleece mid-layer, and technical shorts or pants will make your sail more comfortable.

To dress appropriately for the conditions, at a minimum, T-shirts and shorts must be worn at all times while enrolled in the PJYC Junior Sailing Program. Always wear a life jacket, choose the right one for you, and ensure it has been undergone. Wear underwear and a thermal or synthetic material long-sleeve shirt underneath if you have one, as cotton t-shirts are very cold when wet. Bring a sweatshirt or other appropriate clothing for different activities.

In summary, sailing clothing is crucial for both casual and long-term sailing trips. It is essential to wear light, breathable, and sun-protective clothing, as well as appropriate gear for different weather conditions.
