Canoe racing is a competitive sport that involves teams and individuals racing canoes or kayaks on calm or whitewater rivers and lakes. It is one of the oldest forms of competitive canoe racing, with different disciplines and challenges. One popular type is sprint canoe racing, which focuses on short distances. The Paris Olympic Games feature 16 canoeing events under two primary disciplines: canoe slalom and canoe sprint. The kayak cross event also makes its debut at the Paris Games.
One of the earliest innovations in canoe racing was sit-and-switch paddling, developed by Gene Jensen long before he designed the first bent shaft canoe paddle. Today, only a few paddlers are capable of keeping pace through a 1,000-mile course, enduring both grinding monotony and slow movements.
Canoe sprint is a water sport where athletes race in specially designed sprint canoes or sprint kayaks on calm water over a short distance. Prior to November 2008, canoe sprint was known as flatwater racing. The term is still in use today but is often used as a hypernym for both canoe marathon and canoe sprint.
Both canoe and kayak are raced from club to Olympic level, with variations in boat design depending on the type of water and discipline. There are three main types of boats: Canoe, Kayak, and Squirt Boat. Marathon and Sprint are both types of flatwater canoeing races, though they may seem similar to the untrained eye.
Wildwater racing is a combination of Canoe Sprint and Whitewater, where competitors race down whitewater rapids in Sprints (short distance) and Classic (long distance). The boats used are specially designed to stay above the whitewater and travel quickly down rapids.
The sport developed from the riding of rapids in small boats and rafts, a necessary skill for explorers, hunters, and fishermen. Later, it became an increasingly popular form of competition. Other terms for racing canoe include boat racing, canoe sprint, kayak racing, paddling competition, aquatic speed competition, oar race, paddle sport event, paddling race rowing contest, wildwater race, boat racing, skiff flat water racing shell, and more.
