What Is A Shake Down Trip In Sailing?

Shakedown is a process of thoroughly testing a ship’s systems and equipment to ensure they are functioning correctly before embarking on a longer voyage. The first few sailings of any new ship are traditionally called shakedown cruises, where the ship and its crew are put through their paces ahead of a revenue sailing. A shakedown trip is like a sea trial on a boat, to see what shakes down and falls, ie to discover what isn’t working properly.

Getting ready for the season can be divided into three distinct phases: pre-launch (assuming your yacht is on the hard), post-launch checks, and a shakedown. Shakedown Cruise (published by Adlard Coles) is a lot more than that. It involves building and sailing the Atkin-designed Atkin-designed vessel.

A shakedown cruise is typically conducted before a ship enters service or after major changes such as a crew change, repair, refit, or overhaul. It simulates working conditions for the vessel for various reasons. Shakedown skills include sailing manoeuvres, such as tacks to remind the crew of the way sheets go round the winches.

A shakedown cruise should be a low-risk trip early in the season, before any major holidays or weekends or plans, where the crew and core crew get a good feel for how the vessel reacts to the slightest nudge of the throttle and listens for extraneous rattles, clanking, and clinking sounds. During a shakedown cruise, the new ship is put through simulations of real-life working conditions, allowing the crew the opportunity to get a better understanding of the vessel’s working conditions.

What is a shake down cruise?

Shakedown cruise is a nautical term in which the performance of a ship is tested. Generally, shakedown cruises are performed before a ship enters service or after major changes such as a crew change, repair, refit or overhaul. The shakedown cruise simulates working conditions for the vessel, for various reasons. For most new ships, the major reasons are to familiarise a crew with a new vessel and to ensure all of the ship’s systems are functional.

If the ship is the first of its class, it will likely also be performing its sea trials, a test of its performance. In this context, ‘shakedown cruise’ and ‘sea trials’ may be used interchangeably, though each has a slightly different meaning. In such a case, it is likely that the ship’s systems will be pushed to redline, or maximum capacity, to demonstrate the class’s speed and other important traits. Until bested by another ship of the same class, this shakedown performance will be the standard of the class’s capabilities, and its success may determine whether the class is to enter full production.

In the travel industry a shakedown cruise is also undertaken to test the ship and service crew. These test cruises are sometimes made with passengers travelling at a discount.

How long is a shakedown cruise?

A sea trial is the testing phase of a watercraft (including boats, ships, and submarines). It is also referred to as a “shakedown cruise” by many naval personnel. It is usually the last phase of construction and takes place on open water, and it can last from a few hours to many days.

Sea trials are conducted to measure a vessel’s performance and general seaworthiness. Testing of a vessel’s speed, maneuverability, equipment and safety features are usually conducted. Usually in attendance are technical representatives from the builder (and from builders of major systems), governing and certification officials, and representatives of the owners. Successful sea trials subsequently lead to a vessel’s certification for commissioning and acceptance by its owner.

Although sea trials are commonly thought to be conducted only on new-built vessels (referred by shipbuilders as ‘builders trials’), they are regularly conducted on commissioned vessels as well. In new vessels, they are used to determine conformance to construction specifications. On commissioned vessels, they are generally used to confirm the impact of any modifications.

What is a shake down trip?

A “Shake-Down” trip is a simply a short, close-to-home, excursion with your RV for the purpose of testing out the RV systems, getting to know your RV and checking your packing/ travelling checklists.

A new RV is a hybrid between a house and motor vehicle and while all care is taken and quality testing is done throughout the manufacturing and dealership delivery process, somesystems have to be used in the “real world”to be truly tested. Unlike robot driven factory lines, RVs are mostly built and assembled by people, so a tolerance for the “human factor” needs to be made. As anyone who has built a house will tell you there will always be a list of tweaks and adjustments that need to be made at the first service.

We recommendmaking the Shake Down Trip a local one, remaining close to home (or your selling dealer) so that any issues can be attended to quickly before your big trip. Try a caravan park so that you can test both a 240-volt set up (connected to mains power) and then pretend free camping (unplugged). This will give you a chance to try every appliance and system.

What is a shakedown tour?

A shakedown hike is when a backpacker, in preparation for a long hike such as the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail or the Continental Divide Trail, takes their selection of equipment on a shorter backpacking trip with the intention of testing its trail worthiness. A related term, the pack shakedown, is when a novice hiker has a more experienced hiker suggest changes to the novice’s equipment, often simply suggesting things to leave out.

What does shake down a ship mean?

A shakedown is an expedition that tests a ship’s mission systems and equipment before a field season.

Mission systems like remotely operated vehicles Deep Discoverer and Seirios undergo rigorous testing during shakedown expeditions at the beginning of each field season on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer. Image courtesy of NOAA Ocean Exploration, Windows to the Deep 2018. Download image (jpg, 17.7 MB).

NOAA Ocean Exploration starts every field season on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer with an at-sea “shakedown” to make sure the mapping, remotely operated vehicle (ROV), telepresence, positioning, and other important systems needed to conduct scientific activities are working properly. Shakedowns simulate typical at-sea operations, which enables us to identify and correct problems with existing systems and equipment, test new systems and equipment, and train new staff. Shakedowns are critical to ensuring quality data collection and successful expeditions.

While all aspects of science operations are tested, the focus of a shakedown is usually on the mapping and ROV systems. These systems may be tested on a single expedition or two individual expeditions.

How does a sailboat right itself after a knockdown?

A boat will right itself if the centre of mass is below the centre of buoyancy when the boat is upright, above it when the boat is upside-down, and off to one side when the boat is on its side. A water-tight sailboat with a heavy bulb keel is unconditionally self-righting.

Why do sailboats drag a line?

Retired aeronautical engineer Don Jordan tested what is now known as the series drogue, originally conceived and patented by E. J. Pagan and later patented by Sidelnikov in 1975; However, before his tests, numerous mariners had experimented with pulling several large drogues in series. Like Sidelnikov, Jordan expanded upon this idea and affixed a large number of small parachute drogues to a nylon rope with a weight at the end. A large number of smaller drogues results in there always being a drag force on the line; it does not have to be adjusted to be in phase with the waves as the drag is spread out over many waves. Because the drogue line is prevented from becoming slack there is no jerking or snapping of high loads on the line. This prevention reduces damage to deck fittings and reduces the chance of breakage. The number of small parachutes, the length and thickness of the line, and the size of the end weight are all matched to the displacement of the boat. Another key design feature is the V-bridle. The two attachments should be made at the outer corners of the transom with the lengths of the two bridle lines being 2.5 times the width between the attachment points. According to Jordan, special reinforcement is required for the bridle attachment since Jordan projects that force of 7,000lb. to 27,000lb. and even higher can occur with a breaking wave strike. With this deployment, no steering of any kind is needed.

The series drogue does not have to be adjusted during a storm. Neither do other storm drogues if they are fully deployed and they adhere to the constant rode tension theory. As sea conditions requiring a drogue are usually hazardous to be on deck, it’s usually smart to fully deploy all of the rode associated with a storm drogue. Also, the series drogue can be deployed safely with one hand from the cockpit as can any other storm drogue. Recovering a series drogue before the storm abates takes effort, but the process is safe and straightforward. It can be winched in on sheet winches if the cones are small enough to travel around the winch drum without jamming. The series drogue is currently made by three manufacturers, one in Australia, one in the United States and one in the United Kingdom. Any sailmaker can make one and you can make one yourself, though it is a tedious job.

Studies undertaken by the U.S. Coast Guard have indicated that drogues made of old tires, long lengths of chain, etc. are not effective in slowing most vessels.(citation needed) Old tires may skim along the surface at storm speeds. Extremely long lengths of chain are required for any appreciable drag effect from the chain alone. Nevertheless, these drogues continue to be used.
