What Is A Fast Sailing Ship Called?

The Schooner, a sailing vessel with an average size of 46m (152 feet), was the preferred naval ship in the 18th century. It featured a decked sail craft, several headsails, a gaff-rigged bowsprit, and a couple of masts. The main purpose of the Schooner was to ferry government officials and soldiers.

A barque, barc, or bark is a type of sailing vessel with three or more masts consisting of a fore mast, mainmast, additional masts rigged square, and only the aftmost mast. The Caravel was a medium-sized ship with low draught and lateen or triangular sails, making it ideal for transportation.

A clipper is a sailing vessel designed for speed, prioritizing cargo-carrying capacity over building or operating costs. It is not restricted to any one rig, and is not restricted to any one hull type. The Barque Sedov is the largest sailing ship in the world today, with a length of 117.5 meters and a sail area of 4,192 square meters.

The Sovereign of the Seas, a clipper ship built in 1852, set the world record for the fastest sailing ship, with a speed of 22 knots. The Clippers of the 1860s were the pinnacle of the genre, the fastest sailing trade ships ever.
