A dugout canoe, also known as a logboat or monoxylon, is a boat made from a hollowed-out tree. It was traditionally used by Indigenous peoples and early settlers where the size of tree growth allowed construction. The dugout canoe, likely made from a tree that once grew in Wisconsin, is one of over five dozen found, catalogued, and photographed by Schroeder and The Birth Of A Dugout Canoe by Northmen.
Dugout canoes have been used by people around the world dating back over 8,000 years to the Neolithic Stone Age. In prehistoric times, people made dugout canoes by carving or hollowing out a large tree trunk, alternatively burning it to make it easier. Dugout canoes have served humankind as a means of transportation for at least 10,000 years. In the U.S. Southeast, Indigenous Americans used these boats for transportation and hunting fish with spears, bows, arrows, or hooks made from bark, animal skins, or wood.
Carving and digging are what make a dugout canoe, and metal tools were used to create and smooth them out. In total, 15 dugout canoes were carved by men using various types of tools, such as axes, handled adzes, hand adzes, and smoothing stones.
