A freighter canoe, also known as a cargo canoe, is a type of canoe designed to transport heavy loads across waterways. It is typically larger than recreational or fishing boats and is ideal for remote areas. These canoes are shallow draft inland waterway vessels used to transport large goods and supplies.
The versatility of a freighter canoe as a hunting and fishing canoe is enhanced by its phenomenal stability. Agile and quick, the Cargo can handle an outboard motor up to 3 hp and is easily maneuvered with a paddle. The freighter canoe is not a speed boat and should be treated like one, with a speed of 10 to 15 knots.
18- to 20-foot canoes are best suited for larger families or backcountry trips with lots of cargo. Three-person canoes that are 18 feet or longer are ideal for anglers, hunters, and general recreational marine enthusiasts. The Cargo 17 is the little square stern brother, designed for carrying large loads to remote wilderness destinations.
Francis Mick Fahey designed a wood-and-canvas freight canoe for his own use in the 1960s, offering ample cargo-carrying capacity. The Cargo 15 is easier to car top and portage, featuring one of the widest beams in its category (over 40 inches).
The Esquif Cargo 17 Camo Canoe is a maneuverable square stern canoe with a long waterline and deep bow, making it fast, dry, and capable of bringing home your biggest catch or coveted moose.
