What Impact Does Political Turmoil Have On Travel?

Political instability is a significant factor influencing tourism, as it can negatively impact both the country and its tourism industry. Political problems such as terrorism or war can significantly affect tourism, leading to decreased revenues and disruptions in both domestic and international travel. This study uses fixed effects estimation to empirically model the effect of political instability on tourism to 15 MENA countries. Political conditions that affect tourism include laws, regulations, and state policies that discourage direct marketing of tourism. Civil unrest can have a widespread effect on travel, from road closures to the banning of non-essential travel to a country.

Political instability has been found to be more detrimental than previously thought, as it can spill over borders and affect a country’s overall itinerary. Countries must make plans to recover their tourism industry after a period of political instability, as good international relations play a significant role in promoting inbound tourism.

The study also highlights the importance of maintaining good international relations in promoting inbound tourism. However, geopolitical risks have a significant negative impact on tourism, as they can lead to travel advisories or bans issued for political reasons.

In conclusion, political instability has a significant impact on the demand for travel, particularly in Europe and North America. Countries affected by political unrest experience a decline in international tourists and tourism receipts, disrupting visits by both domestic and international travelers. The hypothesis that political violence deters tourism is mainly based on case study evidence and quantitative studies confined to a small sample of countries.
