What Impact Does Climate Change Have On South African Tourism?

Climate change is affecting tourism in South Africa through temperature increases, droughts, and impacts on wildlife and biodiversity. The country’s tourism industry is at risk due to the rising global temperature, particularly in 2024, which has reached record highs. Climate change threatens ecosystems and biodiversity, the world’s foremost tourism assets, as well as environmental impacts associated with tourism-related activities.

The Western Cape provides critical lessons on combating drought within the tourism sector. Tourism needs to invest in water harvest technology to ensure water availability. This study investigates the evidence and impact of climate variability and change on the Kruger National Park (KNP) in South Africa. Variables such as affordability, attractions, health and safety, and expectancies influence visitors’ destination choices.

Key tourism assets of South Africa are at risk from climate change, and the South African government has supported efforts to mitigate these risks. The KwaZulu-Natal floods in April 2022 and again in April 2024 destroyed holiday homes, beaches, and tourism infrastructure, turning holiday destinations into disaster areas. Environmental impacts associated with tourism, such as air travel and infrastructure construction in wild areas, significantly add to the threat.

Despite its promising growth prior to 2020, South Africa’s tourism sector has been negatively affected by climate change. The climate crisis has adversely affected parts of the country’s tourism, including beaches along the Western Cape Garden Route. To address these challenges, the South African government must invest in capacity building, climate change adaptation, and governance needs.

How does climate change affect tourism?

Rising sea levels and extreme weather events are posing significant threats to coastal resorts and other tourist destinations. These events disrupt tourism activities and influence tourist behavior. Climate change is expected to significantly impact tourism demand, affecting both supply and demand. On the supply side, climate change threatens tourism infrastructure, natural attractions, recreational opportunities, and accessibility. Coastal destinations are particularly vulnerable to sea-level rise and coastal flooding, which can damage tourism assets.

On the demand side, changing climatic conditions alter visitor comfort levels, health risks, and seasonality of destinations, influencing tourists’ choice of destinations. Small island destinations face unnecessary risks due to their economic dependence on climate-sensitive activities. Adapting the tourism sector to climate change requires reducing vulnerability through diversification, green infrastructure, ecosystem conservation, community-based adaptation, and policy support.

Mitigating tourism’s contribution to climate change requires minimizing energy use, switching to renewable energy, improving efficiency, reducing long-haul flights, and promoting sustainable consumption and production. Collective efforts by all stakeholders are needed to transition to a climate-resilient and low-carbon tourism sector that provides socio-economic benefits while minimizing its environmental footprint.

How does climate change affect places?

Climate change is causing significant changes in various aspects of the world, including increased rainfall, floods, droughts, and heat waves. Oceans and glaciers are also experiencing changes, with oceans becoming more acidic, ice caps melting, and sea levels rising. Adaptation is crucial to mitigate these effects on ecosystems and people’s well-being. Examples of adaptation include strengthening water conservation programs, upgrading stormwater systems, developing early warning systems for extreme heat events, and preparing for stronger storms through better emergency preparation and response strategies. The impacts of climate change are expected to be felt in the United States, with the fourth national climate assessment highlighting the need for continued adaptation and adaptation efforts.

How is tourism affected by climate change in South Africa?

Mapungubwe National Park, a world heritage site, has over nine flood hotspots linked to extreme weather events. The park is also a significant historical site, hosting the largest indigenous African kingdom in southern Africa between 1200 and 1290 AD. Sea level rise and tides pose a significant threat to coastal tourism, with fronts, cyclones, and storms triggering high, damaging tides. Cut-off lows also trigger sea storm surges, causing coastal flooding in low-lying areas. Spring tides combined with climate change have caused catastrophic damage to coastal facilities and dangerous rogue waves.

How will travel be affected by climate change?

The effects of climate change are being observed in the form of over 75 air traffic delays in the United States, with the increasing severity of coastal storms and rising sea levels posing a significant risk to the viability of coastal airports. The rise in sea level is exacerbating the incidence of coastal flooding and storm surges, with the affected areas extending to a greater number of U. S. cities. Additionally, an atmosphere that is becoming warmer can also result in an increase in in-flight turbulence, which can further disrupt air travel.

What are the factors affecting the climate in South Africa?

South Africa is a country located within a ‘drought belt’ and is the fifth most water-scarce country in sub-Saharan Africa. Its topography varies from desert to semi-desert in the northwestern region to sub-humid and wet along the eastern coast. The country has both sub-tropical and temperate climate conditions, influenced by the ocean along the east and west coasts and the interior plateaus. The Drakensberg region experiences a cool, wet climate, while the north east experiences a warm, sub-tropical climate. The central west and north west experience a warm, dry desert environment.

South Africa’s average annual rainfall is around 464 mm, with the Western Cape receiving most of its rainfall in winter. The country is highly vulnerable to climate variability and change due to its high dependence on rain-fed agriculture and natural resources. Water is a scarce resource, with projections suggesting that even without climate change, the country is likely to run out of its existing surface water resources. The mean annual temperature is 17.

5℃, with average monthly temperatures ranging between 22°C (December, January) and 11°C (June, July). Annual precipitation is 469. 9 mm, with the highest rainfall occurring between November and March and extremely low precipitation between June and August.

How can climate change affect transport?

Sea level rise, precipitation changes, extreme weather, and heat pose significant risks to the transportation system in various regions. These hazards can impact system performance, safety, and reliability. In coastal regions, rising sea levels and storms can lead to flooding, damaging roads, bridges, railways, ports, and airports. In inland regions, heavy rains can cause flooding and mudslides, affecting highways, railways, and bridges. Drought combined with extreme heat increases wildfire risk, damaging transportation networks and impairing drivers’ visibility.

Rising temperatures can affect transportation in various ways, including affecting runways, making airplanes difficult to take flight, damaging rail tracks, and causing road cracks. Heat also poses safety risks to transportation workers and travelers, as vehicles can overheat and roadway joints can buckle, leading to accidents.

How does climate change affect South Africa?

South Africa’s agriculture and biodiversity are vital assets, contributing significantly to the economy and supporting a significant portion of the population. However, climate change poses a threat to these assets, with increased frequency and intensity of droughts, heatwaves, and severe flooding in some areas. These extreme weather events are likely to damage crops and infrastructure, and threaten plants and animals that attract tourism. The impacts of climate change are expected to affect livelihoods, food and water security, and ultimately increase the cost of living for South Africans.

Dr. Peter Johnston from the UCT Climate System Analysis Group emphasized that South Africa’s response to these changes will depend on the response of all its people, especially policy makers and planners. Small-scale and commercial farmers acknowledge the threat of climate change, with adaptation strategies ranging from soil carbon enhancement to indigenous rainwater harvesting. However, there is concern that these efforts may not be enough under future climate scenarios, especially for small-scale farmers who face greater vulnerability due to structural barriers like limited access to finance and infrastructure.

What are the factors affecting tourism in South Africa?

The study, the first of its kind involving South African National Parks, aimed to identify environmental factors that negatively affect tourists’ experiences and whether frequent visitors are more aware of environmental impacts. Data was collected from 451 questionnaires on the SANParks official website. Factor analysis identified five environmental factors that negatively affected tourists’ experience: pollution, tourism product offering, park violation, environmental management, and tourism impacts.

An ANOVA test was conducted to examine the relationship between the frequency of tourists’ visits and the effect of these factors on their experience. The findings should help develop management strategies to reduce negative nature-based experiences in South African National Parks.
