“We were 500 miles out to sea off Eureka, California, on a Scripps (Research Institute) ship called the ORCA,” Ballard writes by email. “We were in a storm with 30-foot swells when a.

What if it rains the whole time on cruise?

When it’s not nice on deck, explore the interior of the ship.On rainy days, the crew often compensates by opening more venues for dining, entertainment and relaxation. Here are some suggestions for things to do:

  • If your ship has an indoor pool, join in the pool games.
  • Visit the spa and salon for some luxurious treatments.
  • Take in a movie or afternoon performance in one of the theaters.
  • Work out or take a class in the fitness center.
  • Visit the onboard shops: they might be running some “rainy day” specials.
  • Check the ship’s daily bulletin for pub quiz games, bingo and card games, lectures, cooking demonstrations or karaoke contests (even if you don’t want to participate, it’s fun to watch).
  • Find a good book in the ship’s library, which probably has a nice selection of board games, too.

The fun that you can have on board may not make up for the disappointment of missing a port you’ve been looking forward to, but it can help. Plus, you’ll stay safe and in great shape to enjoy the rest of your cruise.

Do cruises cancel due to rain?

Because cruise ships can move around bad weather, full cancellations are rare. But they can and do happen. Cruise lines are loath to cancel sailings and try to wait as long as possible before making a decision, while still trying to give passengers enough lead time to make alternate plans if necessary. If a cruise line does cancel, it will offer compensation usually a full refund of the cruise fare and possibly an additional percentage of your fare paid, given in the form of a future cruise credit.

You’re always free to cancel your cruise before the cruise line does, but in most cases, you will lose the full price you paid for the cruise (minus port fees). In instance of extremely severe storms (like hurricanes), cruise lines will typically allow passengers to cancel without penalty. Cruise Critic always recommends buying travel insurance that covers weather disruptions. This might not allow you to cancel because of impending storms, but it will cover you for travel disruptions caused by a storm or other significant weather events and natural disasters.
