The Transatlantic Slave Trade Database provides detailed records of 36,000 trans-Atlantic slave voyages and 10,000 intra-American ventures. In the 1510s and ’20s, ships sailing from Spain to Caribbean settlements of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola might contain as few as one or two enslaved people, or as many as 30 or 40. When a slave ship from Europe, Brazil, or North America arrived on the African coast, it could sail to one of the forts on the coast, preferably under the same flag as that of the ship. Both British and United States owners sailing with Portuguese and Spanish papers used the triangular trade route and its Middle Passage. Between 1500 and 1866, slave traders forced 12.5 million Africans aboard transatlantic slave vessels.
Slave ships were large cargo ships specially built or converted from the 17th to the 19th century for transporting slaves. The first European slave ship transported enslaved Africans from São Tomé to New Spain in 1525. Portuguese and Dutch traders dominated the trade in the 16th and 17th centuries. The NEH-supported Voyages: The Transatlantic Slave Trade Database allows the public to follow for the first time the routes of the main European nations involved in slaving. Britain began large-scale slaving through private trading companies in the 1640s, with the London-based Royal African Company being the most important.
The vast majority of those transported in the transatlantic slave trade were from Central Africa and West Africa and had been sold by West Africans. France joined the traffic of slaves in 1624, Holland, and Denmark soon followed. The Dutch wrested control of the transatlantic slave trade from the Portuguese.

📹 The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Explained
This video will look at how the slave trade started, how slavery became so popular, and how European slavery transformed into …
Only the strongest Africans survived the hell & horrors on those slave ships-in which the voyages lasted from 5 to 20 weeks or an average of 80 to 90 days in which the African captives were shackled & chained in their own filth with not even enough space to sit up at times. African Americans ancestors had to be a hell of a strong people to have had survived all of that hell.
There were some that sat at the bottom of that ship suffering from tooth aches, vertigo, migraines, labor pains, cancers, mourning family, anxiety claustrophobia and so much more this is a truly astounding testament to the nature of mankind and the evil of his nature. May the souls of the departed feel a peace so divine it washes the pain of centuries and the captures feel the eternal fire of “vengeance itself”
I’m in South Africa and we are taught this in high school history. Ever since I learnt this, I’ve never been the same and that was about 9/10 years ago. Writing my history exams was very emotional for me, I’ll never forget Thank you for sharing, there are so many people out there who don’t know the truth.
I did learn about all of or most of our history from my History teacher who is Black and my World Culture teacher who was also Black they are true dear friends. My American history teacher is a actor now and still educates the masses even though he has retired as he say you never retire you just recirculate the information and the knowledge.
The transatlantic slave trade completely changed the demographic of the western hemisphere; especially in Brazil. I was a Portuguese major in college and when I did my study abroad in Brazil, the slave trade was my exit report. This article was so detailed and covered so many intricate details they don’t discuss in the classroom. Bravo 👏🏼
I abhor Slavery, any kind of slavery, but many good things came from the Africans that were brought to the Americans, I am so happy and honored that we were finally integrated as Americans! I love all of my Africa brothers and sisters, they made America a very special country and I believe we were all meant to join houses together, no matter how! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I recently found that apparently the first person to start slavery was a black African queen called Nzinga, she used to sell enemy folk of other tribes once they had been caught by her warriors, it says on the net that she used to sell them to the Portuguese, who then took them to the U.S.A to be sold as slaves. I have also recently found out something else but this makes me angrier and its that, there were some black people who had been slaves and once they were giveng their freedom by their owners, once they had made some money and bought land, they went out and bout their own slaves, this really gets to me (and me being white), cause these people already knew what it had felt like to be a slave and have their freedom stolen or taken away from them, i dont understand why they didnt buy them, but letting them know that they would be free once they had worked on their lands as to recuparate what they had spent on them, but once they did it would be freedom for them. A name to check out on these are Johnston and James Roark, this really angers and saddens me cause they knowing what they did know, turned their backs on people of their own race.
I won’t ever forget it, in Texas ( of all places) one of my favorite history teachers actually did bring all this up… I remember after class I had more questions, he explained more and gave me reading material. I had been in that school district my whole life, but a teacher that was also a football coach taught me more ❤️ He was also one of my first teachers to say fuck Christopher Columbus 😂
Did they take a brake during hurricane season. Where are all the boats If there were an estimated 12,000 boats we haven’t found but 4 or 5 if they tried going across the Atlantic 11,995 sunk the Atlantic ain’t no joke. This coming from a former shellback. There is no way in the hell they got a cross the Atlantic on a sale boats. Make it make sense man. Black folks were the natives you speaking about as well. A friend of mine was easily able to prove his ancestors were here prior to slavery. The native Americans in Alabama Georgia Louisiana Florida wasn’t Mongoloids Indians from the northwest. That’s why Columbus thought he was India when he hit Caribbean in 1492. India was controlled by the Naga Kushites from Africa. So obviously Christopher Columbus and his blackamoor friends thought the native ppl looked African the Indians had to be black brown skinned ppl without the Asian Mongoloid features 🤷🏿
I’m simply not interested in ANY narrative that begins our history in chains. No disrespect to the hard work in putting this together, but this isn’t much different than the Eurocentric history that schools teach. The descendants of the enslaved warriors would benefit much more by beginning and focusing our history in truth – which means IN FREEDOM. BLACK HISTORY DID NOT BEGIN when we met the Europeans. I know he glanced over this towards the beginning of this article. But we must tell our correct history, it began in FREEDOM with drums. Grace and peace ✌🏾👊🏾
No mention that is was the British started the abolition of the unlawful act of slavery and that the Navy that stopped slave ships and set them free. More than 2,000 British sailors lost their lives fighting slavery on the high seas. William Wilberforce in the 1850s started the ban on slave trade and the Navy patrolled the seas to enforce it.
There have been more groups of people enslaved since the Dawn of Mankind than UN-enslaved. Every culture practiced slavery at one time or another throughout history. Human beings are vicious, cruel, violent and greedy. I hoped all my life we would treat each other better. For the sake of the children especially. May God bless and help us all.
They never taught me about this in school, all I was taught in history was how mongo park discover this and that . And here I learnt history I couldn’t learn in school . I think Africans need to add this history into there curriculum in school and do away with most of this western curriculum they bring to us . Imagine a grown up man like me don’t know history of my ancestors 😢. May the spirit of my ancestor that where gone during this slave trade rest in peace and I also thank them for fighting for my kind to keep existing in earth ❤
Anyone who says that they learned this in school is a damn lie! I was in honor classes growing up in Florida & the most our traditional schools taught us was that slaves came across with sailors to the Western world’s period. It never got into detail about different areas, the involvement of different coordinated nations, conditions & exchanges. Thank you for this article, great find!
As a Portuguese i still remember before the 25/04/1974 revolution that ended 40 years of a brutal Far Right dictatorship led by António Oliveira Salazar,in school the slave trade was not even mention on the History books abaut the Glorious past of Portugal in the History of Mankind. Only in the 90’s the slave trade subject that Portugal was the first European nation to exploit, and the one responsable for the greater number of people Kidnaped from their lands to be a slave in the Portuguese colony of brasil. From the estimated 12 million human beings kidnaped from Africa to go to the Americas, almost 8 million ended on the Portuguese colony of Brasil. It’s a very “Delicate” subject to talk or discuss even so many years after. Because no one wants that this very dark and evil episode might Stain the Huge contribution of Portugal to the world we know today.
The photograph of the gentleman with all the whip lashing scars on his back was one of the first ever of the survivors of the slave trade to have had his scars photographed this brave man’s name was Gordon’ photo subject whipped peter 1863 one of the photographs that exposed the real horror’s of slavery’
I knew this information as a 16year old when I wanted to know more about my history. I brought a book “Called before the Mayflower” and it addressed the African wars, people enslaved and sold by chieftain’s to western slavers for transport to Portugal,Spain and other countries years before America started doing the same thing(Cheap labor). This book addressed everything from the very beginning leading all the way up to the civil rights movement in the 60’s.Don’t remember the author but this Book was EXCELLENT Read.
People are extremely ignorant to assume their ancestors were slaves based solely on the color of their skin. There’s actually a chance a white person had ancestors that were slaves while a black persons ancestors were slave owners/traders. I don’t want reparations. I want to be judged by my character and not the color of my skin. I want freedom to work and provide for my family. Ya’ll stirring the pot to cause division and segregation.
It was told that in America, the white caucasians never thought that slavery of Afro-black people were a crime after the abolishion of slavery as a crime by law in America, the white caucasians never thought that the Afro-people would contribute a great impact in the civilizations of Americas on these present age, from agriculture to music industry.
I am so glad that this is no longer being ignored, I will say this, I turn 39 this year, this was definitely taught in schools, the problem is that folks ignored it, I thank these people for coming clean but I work in a facility where it’s 50% African American 50% African, and the tension is there. You have Jewish Africans, who empathize with us, but for the most part no. You get a Chance look at a movie called Sugar Hill with Wesley Snipes, there’s a scene where a African calls a black American a ” Akkata ” he says cotton picker, so no this was taught in schools
The flowchart of Slave trade: – Conquered people or tribes were enslaved by local African King (racially also Black). – The local African King either used them or sold them to the Berbers, Arabs, or Europeans. – Europeans got their slaves from either Berbers or other European colonisers or or other European slave traders. – While Arabs mostly sold their slaves to the Turks or Indians. So, African rulers basically sold other Africans.
I read that from the begining that the Arabs were involved in the slave trade in Africa before the Europeans. And that the Europeans bought most of the slaves from the Arabs. I remember a story from the same book the story of Aladdin came from ( this was the book that was heavily sanitized for children years ago) The story was about a African slave who was a dwarf that a Arab had bought as a playmate for his daughter. I doubt that this story is still in the Arabian Nights. It had sex in it. My grandfather would not tolerate any prejudice against people of African descent in his family since he was sure we had ancestors from Africa. The ancestors of his family were American Indians who took in runaway slaves and adopted them into the tribe.
Here’s another thing the schools never taught us about slavery- the first slave owner that went to court for the right to own slaves was a black man. Here’s one more thing- African chieftains kept their tribe as slaves. Africans weren’t enslaved when they came to the US, they were born slaves. The only difference if their lives as slaves were much easier in America than Africa.
The main reason for the trade in African slaves was that the Native American Indian suffered from diseases that they had no immunity to and about 99 percent died, whole villages and tribes were wiped out. The European could only find Africans traders to supply to trade to the Americas, many African kingdoms actively co-operated with Europeans to obtain and trade slaves.
All of this is taught in schools. What’s not taught is that Europeans were not normally the captures but the perchasers. The slaves were sold by African captures to the Europeans. This is well documented in my families history. This part of the story does not fit the agenda, though. History needs to be taught without bias. Overall, it was a great documentary!!!
I’m Moroccan 🇲🇦 half Arab and half native North African. My grand mother form my father side told me our family (African natives) we where slaves for the royal families. But I also know that Spain enslaved black Moroccans, so I want to know more about Moroccans (moors at the time) being enslaved by Spain and France to the now world called now America
Did you know this 🤔 Men, women, and children were captured to such a devastating extent that vast numbers of sea coast towns were abandoned. According to Robert Davis, between 1 million and 1.25 million Europeans were captured by Barbary pirates and sold as slaves in North Africa and Ottoman Empire between the 15th and 19th centuries.
I am a survivor of the African Diaspora. I am a Board member of Phyllis Wheatley Rise to Read Campaign Inc. Black Culture Unlocked, you did an excellent job. Some of your content needs work and expanded explanation. I have studied this subject for more than fifty-five years and have books on the subject older than my age. Things were said and written, and truth was told because people never thought we would be where we are today. I no longer refer to our people as “Black”. The word, it’s Latin root and synonyms speaks, and define negativity and evil. They have named us. We need the self-determination to name and define ourselves. Niger, Nigeria, Latin synonym of black and evil. Sudan, Arabic for bilad al-sudan, land of the blacks. Ethiopia, (at one time, any of us from the continent were referred to as Ethiopian or Ethiop, which was meant to be a slur) Greek for the same meaning, when the name of the nation is originally Abyssinia. Egypt, Greek (an Indo-European language) replaced Kemet/Khemet, which means “land of the blacks”, according to European scholars. Akebulan… Africa, Roman.
Apologies are a form of acknowledgement that this actually occurred. That’s a big first step which is. “SAYING WE SEE THE SUFFERING AND TAKE SOME FORM OF RESPONSIBILITY TO TRY TO RIGHT A WRONG” That’s the purpose of an apology it’s at least acknowledging a wrong and taking a first step in righting that Wrong..
Good article. Please do another one where you focus more on the other countries and continents and societies that enslaved people as well as the scope of each of them. I think it would be eye opening for many to see the numbers of north American colonial slaves vs other continents and countries and cultures. In america, it seems people are only taught about the slavery here as though it existed in a vacuum. They never even learn the etymology of the word slave, which shocks most of them after learning it. History is a messy complicated place and “equitable” reparations, after understanding the universality of slavery prior to its abolishing in the western world, will seem much more complicated and perhaps absurd when faced with the full historical truth about slavery around the globe, including in Africa.
I’m glad the subject is not treated as a black and white situation(no pun intended). Truth is, the great majorty of slaves were captured during wars between native africans. Everything promoted, of course, by european and american money. Africans were very familiar with slavery long before europeans arrived in there too. This is not about the bad white man against the poor black people. It’s about humans exerting power over the weak for their own profit.Something that transcends frontiers and skin colors, sadly.
Slavery was practiced everywhere in the world and by every race. No race has any moral high-ground to point fingers. Especially not re the transatlantic slave trade which was a black-owned business. I will stand with anyone in condemning the 2% of Americans who owned slaves. These were the wealthy elites. The other 98% of Americans could never afford slaves and took no part in the practice. Many were forced to fight and die in a bloody civil war over it though…. they still get zero gratitude. The only thing unusual about American slavery is that it’s people actually recognized that it was wrong and did something about it. Outside of the west there are more slaves in the world in 2023 than there were at the height of the transatlantic slave trade. I won’t stand with anyone who acts like Britain and America have nothing to be proud of.
Please remember Black family we all did not arrive in America on slave ships. We were already here and America knows it. They try to keep this fact from us. A lot of us were reclassified at Negro. This was our land first. We dominated the earth before any other group. Every human being is derived from the Black man and woman. Black proud all day.❤❤❤❤
Chattel slavery in Eastern Europe was far longer lasting with more massive numbers, and it played a role in why eastern Europe is politically far less stable than western Europe today. There were, in fact, far more Europeans enslaved by North Africans in history than there were west Africans enslaved by Europeans. The word slave comes from slav. There’s something else nobody learns.
Europeans were slaves to their own people in Europe as Africans were slaves to African warlords. Europeans purchased slaves from these African warlords in the transatlantic slave trade. I’m not saying there is anything remotely redeeming about slavery! it’s abhorrent.. Let’s not pretend, however, that these African warlords weren’t every bit as brutal as the Mongols, the Spartans, the Romans, the Ottomans, etc were to their slaves. Go to West Africa and witness the diamond trade and the modern day slaves who work at extracting diamonds in the rough ( The Europeans could not make it into the interior of Africa without dying from diseases to which they had no immunity, the same way smallpox killed a lot of American Indians.(Uncut chunks of dirty looking glass like rocks). Any slave caught stealing a diamond typically has their hands chopped off (hence the name blood diamonds). I suspect 300-400 years ago the African slave owners were not the sweethearts that had their free happy and healthy constituents stolen by Spanish and British racists. I don’t think a handful of ships would be enough of a force to both get away with it without getting killed by the dictator’s warriors, but more importantly I think the Europeans would have a hell of a time surviving in the interior of a country with predators, venomous snakes, diseases that had not ever reached European soil, and unforgiving landscapes and elements. This is a myth that has sustained itself since the hit series or miniseries Roots came out in the 70s and it was the story that we were told in American School until I got to college and really dug into history I didn’t realize that it was nothing like that in fact, African scholars to this day tell the truth, but the left pretends that slavery was invented by early American settlers and was predicated not on a tradition as old as civilization itself that occurred on all populated continents all the way back to the earliest civilizations that we know of such as Samaria, Babylon Egypt, etcetera etcetera and it has sustained to this day where it is estimated that some 40 million people are still slaves by definition and probably of more than a few billion people are effectively slaves meaning they work at below the poverty wage in third world dictatorships where they are physically, emotionally and financially suffering horrors that we in the west couldn’t imagine I can’t imagine the plantation owners back in the 1700s in 1800s were one of the more brutal slave owners compared to the slave owners throughout history and the including today,.
Slavery was not monolithic even in the America’s. For instance, slavery is the Caribbean and South America was more akin to plantation slavery, where you had hundreds of enslaved on one plantation under the watch of a few enslavers. Because of that it was very brutal as the enslavers had to keep their property in line. The mortality rate was enormous in these regions. On the other hand, slavery in the US was smaller scale, many families owned enslaved people but usually only had a few. Only a few enslavers had large plantations. Of course, slavery in the US was brutal and in all honesty had more brutal repercussions due to the Civil War and the failure to successfully integrate the enslaved to mainstream society which has caused myriad problems for the country. Meanwhile, Caribbean and South American slavery kind of gets swept under the rug but is no less interesting and important. The majority of enslaved people from Africa actually ended up in Brazil and the South American countries.
Portuguese here. We talk about his in middle school! It sucks we did it and makes no sence for our goverment to not express an apology as we teach this to kids in school. I was tought about this around 2002, so it has been spoken about at least for some 25 years, as my older brother learned the same things during is school time.
Ecclesiasticus 33:25 If thou set thy servant to labour, thou shalt find rest: but if thou let him go idle, he shall seek liberty. Ecclesiasticus 33:26 A yoke and a collar do bow the neck: so are tortures and torments for an evil servant. Ecclesiasticus 33:27 Send him to labour, that he be not idle; for idleness teacheth much evil. Ecclesiasticus 33:28 Set him to work, as is fit for him: if he be not obedient, put on more heavy fetters. Ecclesiasticus 33:29 But be not excessive toward any; and without discretion do nothing. Ecclesiasticus 33:30 If thou have a servant, let him be unto thee as thyself, because thou hast bought him with a price. Ecclesiasticus 33:31 If thou have a servant, entreat him as a brother: for thou hast need of him, as of thine own soul: if thou entreat him evil, and he run from thee, which way wilt thou go to seek him?
1)Where are all the slave ships?? 2)Why hasn’t at least ONE slave ship been restored enuf for tours, allowing visitors to actually lie down in shackled positions? 3)Why hasn’t the slave ship routes been reenacted, re-sailed in such a way as to prove their truism, their actuality of having happened? 4)If, “they”, lied via HisStory about who was already living on Turtle Island when columbus arrived – by accident – why should anyone melanated believe what they have said for eons, about slavery, slaves, natives, aboriginals and even the slaves’ origins? 5)Of note the natives were NOT the savages, the colonizers were. I no longer buy into the transatlantic voyages, I believe it’s mostly fictitious, deliberate lies designed to create the confusion of origin amongst melanated people in America. Melanated people were already here in America, then called Turtle Island, before columbus arrived after he had gotten lost.
Serbs were severely oppressed under Turkish occupation for five centuries. Furthermore, young boys were kidnapped and taken to Turkey to be trained as soldiers – it was called YANICHARY! Previously the Arabs raided the Balkans as well and were capturing young men and women; women for harems concubines and men to be rowers in the gallies of their ships. The “rowers” lifespan was very short, from a few weeks to a few months, after which the corpses were fed to sharks. If we go back to Roman times, Slavs (‘Slaves’ came from ‘Slavs;) were captured by Roman legions for slavery and as fighters in Colosseum.
🔔 Can you imagine how many of us are descendants of kings and queens. Africa has 54 countries on that continent and they speak more than 2,000 languages. That’s a lot of tribes! All of them needing leaders aka kings. Our people were done severely dirty and no words could ever describe what our ancestors endured. It’s not fair.
Your content at 15:0 should have been introduced at the beginning of this article. Yes, we participated greatly in our own demise, and the impact of these consequences live on today in our culture worldwide. Financial reparation is never going to happen in my lifetime. When we change our mindset, we change our condition.
If you are going to talk about slavery mention every ethnicity who have been enslaved all of our races at 1 point or another have been enslaved asians, europeans, africans PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE by different ethnicities and nationalities im not going to sit here and be told who to be sympathetic towards. Everyones ancestors struggled we live in the here and now.
A lot of these poor unfortunate souls were sold by their tribal leaders. That part has been left out of History too. For all the decent people that were kidnapped and sold a lot of The chieftains would get rid of those and their families who were troublemakers, criminals or challenge the chieftain to his throne. They rounded up the dissidents and ship them out and we’re paid very handsomely for for these people.
I wonder how many Juwes were told to forget the Holocaust. My grandparents told us of the things there parents told them about slavery. And before someone says anything my father was born in 1932. He father was born in the 1800’s or early 1900’s. We are owed reparations for the crime of Slavery but we probably won’t never get it.
This article, while somewhat biased, does give some very informative points. Importantly, we must be aware of the African side of the slave business. Africans who captured slaves for a living kept the trade going for hundreds of years. Africans, not Europeans captured Slaves and delivered them to the Europeans for money, gold, jewels or alcohol. The Dahomey Tribe were especially brutal in the way that they captured African men, women and children, and killed the old and crippled whom they could not make any money from. Nothing at all what the movie “The Woman King” portrayed. In fact the Dahomey never fought the Europeans and even partnered with them as this article shows.
I’m fairly positive Africans in Africa between 1500-1800 werent sitting all together whistling kumbaya in peace and harmony. It’s evidenced that most slaves were already slaves. The reason it was called slave “trade” was because Africans were trading THEIR slaves for money, food or weapons. So there’s that….
When I lived in the Congo, this was talked about. The African tribes who ruled much of the coastline actively had slaves themselves. This was a common practice among many civilizations worldwide. As a matter of fact the word slave comes from the word Slav which means the Slavic people who were enslaved some couple thousand years ago. BLM and many other organizations want people to believe that it was all the Europeans’ fault, and don’t get me wrong they have a lot of blame in this, but the Africans also played a huge role in this. It was all about trade and business.
Yes, I totally agree. This article is CRAZY. Crazy in that some pieces of information are missing; common-sensical pieces at that. Prime example, if I were to show up at my neighbor’s front door with overwhelming firepower, the likes of which he’s never seen before, and demand an audience in which I present my demand at gunpoint of his strongest son, and virgin, fertile daughter. If he looks confused or there’s a failure to communicate, I lay him low and then turn to his wife, do anyone think that she’ll follow in his confused state? For demonstration purposes of my power over life, I lay her low and then cast my gaze upon their children. Who here in this thread still thinks we’re going to have a communication issue?? Let’s say, they don’t get it in gear fast enough, I plant them where they stand. All of this is done in front of their neighbors. I then address their neighbors and motion my desires with said firepower. NOW, who here still foolishly believes we will still have communication problems? Yes, initially, there was a scrap, but one Kingdom got wise and looked out for their own and brokered a deal with the invading Europeans. Though one may argue for a source, my counter is, don’t be so educated that you’re stupid. Refer back to my example of The Art of the Africa-Buck Breaking Slave Deal, involving my guns. Look what’s happening over in Ukraine. A superior force has arrived and brought destructive firepower. Ukrainians are being mowed down like freshly mown grass by a superior force.
We built the whole United Snakes, wit no work gloves, or work boots. Yeah the real CHILDREN OF ISRAEL did that, nothing to be bragging about, our FATHER say we the salt of the earth, which means we the whole thang. Our punishment over tho 1619-2019, United Snakes imploding right now as I write, itz almost over. All praises to YAHAWAH BAHASHAM HAMASHIAC YAHAWAHSHI!
Ok. On the slave trade part, it is what it is. Slavery is a part of human history. The more heinous act was the complete destruction of the culture we came with leaving us with no cultural identity. On top of that, we were repeatedly told we were inferior as a race for 300 years. Couldn’t even read the same books as whites till about 60 years ago… Black Americans as a people have to be one of, if not THE, biggest group of people whose ancestry is directly linked to slavery. As in, no slavery no black American. In that sense, we’re probably the most unique group of people in the Americas today. The only people’s whose ancestors didn’t CHOOSE to come here for a better life and also have no connections to their native homelands. What other group can make this claim? One more then I’m done lol I prefer black American or just American opposed to African American. Im an American national, wasn’t born in Africa AND it’s a disservice to lump black Americans and actual African-Americans into the same category. Craziness lol only immigrants from Africa can be AFRICAN American. Born here? Black American. Dueces lol
I agree, slavery has nothing to do with skin color. Atlantic slavery could only exist because African tribes enslaved and sold each other, and eventually sold them to muslims and whites. What black people did to their own people is disgusting, and Europeans and other people who joined, were just as disgusting. Christians stopped slavery, Democrats wanted to continue slavery. Blame on them.
This is a thoughtful piece….definitely worth a share. I am puzzled though….not sure who doesn’t want you sharing this story? A bit dramatic to believe that honestly as I have already been taught all of this 40 years ago while attending public schools in Florida. It is no secret….part of every US History class; not to mention by 2023 there are dozens of movies, documentaries and thousands of books on the subject. The library is your friend if anyone looking to check them out. Peace be with you!
They probably censored it not bc of the discussion about slavery but about the suggestion that the holocaust wasn’t engineered by the Germans. There was a bit of holocaust denial in here. Happy to hear other perspectives. Also, there’s probably tons of copyright infringement with clips from all of those films.
Slavery is a complex and age old issue. The only unquestioned truth is that all colours were enslaved and exploited No one would, in their right mind seek to eulogise Red Indians due to their brutal marshal tradition – most African chiefs were only too pleased to sell their rivals The only thing worse than exploitation is not being exploited at all Christ was the redemption
It still doesn’t make sense to me. Like the story doesn’t add up. How you send 12.5 million slaves on ships that wasn’t even equipped for human conditions? On top of that majority of them slaves are dying on that ship, aint no way around it. You have to sit back and really think logically about the whole situation. It makes no sense at all. Majority of so called african americans were already in the americas
Jeremiah 30:10-21 10 “My people, do not be afraid; people of Israel, do not be terrified. I will rescue you from that faraway land, from the land where you are prisoners. You will come back home and live in peace; you will be secure, and no one will make you afraid. 11 I will come to you and save you. I will destroy all the nations where I have scattered you, but I will not destroy you. I will not let you go unpunished; but when I punish you, I will be fair. I, the Lord, have spoken.” 12 The Lord says to his people, “Your wounds are incurable, your injuries cannot be healed. 13 There is no one to take care of you, no remedy for your sores, no hope of healing for you. 14 All your lovers have forgotten you; they no longer care about you. I have attacked you like an enemy; your punishment has been harsh because your sins are many and your wickedness is great. 15 Complain no more about your injuries; there is no cure for you. I punished you like this because your sins are many and your wickedness is great. 16 But now, all who devour you will be devoured, and all your enemies will be taken away as prisoners. All who oppress you will be oppressed, and all who plunder you will be plundered. 17 I will make you well again; I will heal your wounds, though your enemies say, “Zion is an outcast; no one cares about her.’ I, the Lord, have spoken.” 18 The Lord says, “I will restore my people to their land and have mercy on every family; Jerusalem will be rebuilt, and its palace restored. 19 The people who live there will sing praise; they will shout for joy.
Apologies are NOT sufficient!!!! 23 countries should pay for their involment. Right now millions of children and women are dying in Somalia due to a severe drought yet we hear nothing about that on the news reports yet we send billions to the Ukraine. Okay fine….help Ukraine but help restore African countries as well since they have been exploited for centuries.
Reparations should be for diasporas who are children of slaves not the African Nations. The United States, Americas, Caribbean, Brazil and those that are in Europe for e.g. Black people in Britain, France, Holland etc, including the Arab Nations. Each colonizer owes a public apology and reparations to all diasporic people of African descent. They have not done this and diasporic people are still treated inferior and of third class citizens in the Western World. Too much talk, no actions
I thought this article was about what schools never told us. Five minutes in and all I’ve heard is common knowledge. The uncommon knowledge would be the fact that the slave were captured by opposing African tribes, sold to the barbary pirates and Muslim traders, who then on-sold the slaves to the likes of the East India Trading company, who then transported said slaves to Europe and the Americas, to be sold to the end user (aka slave masters). I find it rather ironic that primitive cultures had blacksmiths, goldsmiths, farmers and soldiers. They were hunter/gatherers, and while they did play a few crude musical instruments, the only musicians of tribal Africa were the same hunters and gatherers. To say some of the captured Africans were musicians is misleading at best, and a downright lie at worst, as the African tribal culture had zero professional musicians. That’s like calling an average Joe or Jane who goes out dancing at a nightclub for recreation after a week of hard work, a dancer.
Humanity has been so cruel. Even today people are slaved through being fed drug addiction so that people make high and fast profits. Here in South Africa there are more black drug slavors to other black people than any other race. Sometimes we are our own enemies outsiders simply take the advantage of that.
I love how this article conveniently starts at the year 1500. Completely ignoring the slave trade between Middle Eastern and Africa. The selling of black African slaves went on hundreds of years before the Europeans even got there. There’s plenty of blame to go around for this long brutal time in history.
I wish this article would have highlighted the people who have helped stop slavery. How America was the First Nation to ban the slave trade. Or maybe some of The Revolutionary War Heroes like James Armistead, who was a slave spy delivering a fatal blow to the British army. Slavery is beyond words horrible. There are like 94 nations who still have slavery and an estimated 40 million people who are still slaves today. I hope someday all people will be free like we are in The United States of America, but the fight is not over.
This story doesn’t add up the infection would run wild especially with no antibodies if they were packed under the decks like sardines there would be pressure ulcers all over their bodies over a 3-4 month journey, they should die in 2 weeks, all of them. Trans Atlantic is salt based so where did the water supply come from? Some the claims should be reviewed into more detail.
In the early 18th century, Kings of Dahomey (known today as Benin) became big players in the slave trade, waging a bitter war on their neighbours, resulting in the capture of 10,000, including another important slave trader, the King of Whydah. King Tegbesu made £250,000 a year selling people into slavery in 1750. King Tegbesu is quoted as saying slavery is vital to the African economy and has a statue of him today in benin that lights up at night whats up with that
