Sailing terms and phrases refer to language specific to the sport of sailing, including boat parts, sailing maneuvers, wind direction, and more. Navigating nautical and sailing terminology can be challenging, but it is essential for any crew member. This glossary of sailing terms and abbreviations covers basic language to complex terminology.
Some sailing terms are logical, like fore means forward or front of the boat, while others might be in a different language. Acronyms include RAC (Racing), SUS (Suspended racing), STM (Stealth mode), and FIN (Finished).
Sea traffic management (STM) is a methodology developed by the Swedish Maritime Administration MonaLisa project and endorsed by the European Commission. STM stands for Ship-To-Manufacturing and is used by ECDIS manufacturers involved in the STM Validation Project. It is believed that STM is a pre-requisite for the introduction of autonomous ships, as it allows other ships in the vicinity to know their voyage plan and route details.
STM tools are newly developed services, meaning a limited amount of VTS operators have used and evaluated them. The STM ECDIS predicts intersection points between ships route and CPA. A short blue perpendicular line indicates where RS 1000 will be on her.
Score: Indicates the score value that this boat received as a tie breaker. Boats with equal series scores but whose hierarchy is determined by a count back are considered equal.
