Tacking involves steering through tight angles to turn into the wind, while jibing involves turning away from the wind in a more fluid motion. A comprehensive list of essential sailing terms is provided to enhance your nautical knowledge, covering meteorology, navigation, and boat equipment. Port refers to anything to the left of the boat, while when refers to facing forward.
Learning sailing terms can be challenging, but some are logical, such as “fore means” or “preterite.” Fore means prepared, willing, and ready, and must be written with a circumflex accent. It also refers to any gear not fastened down or properly put away, or to mean absent without leave. Aft refers to the stern of the vessel.
The abbreviation PRET stands for preterit, meaning “preterit.” Fore refers to the front of the boat, galley refers to the kitchen, and head refers to the bathroom on board. When a yacht reaches the layline, it is said to be on the layline, while going beyond it means sailing a greater distance to reach the mark.
When learning to sail, you are taught about ropes, which are called sheets, lines, warps, or painters. Prêt-à-porter is a ready-to-wear fashion, often abbreviated as Pret. Abrest occurs when two boats are facing in the same direction, side by side, at the same speed and position. Adrift is a boat floating loose, without a fixed position.
A 1.96 AMOLED display magnifies information through ultra smooth touch-responsive interactions. Heeling is the term for when a sailboat leans over in the water, pushed by the wind.

Things seem not too bad in the Philippines today. Here in Cape Verde the virus also hasn’t really taken hold. Let’s hope it stays that way! Though I still have concerns in the long run, even when this is over countries that are free of it will probably not be keen to reopen their borders. Well, I have work to do too, hopefully my Aliexpress orders will still arrive! All the best mate.
That is a massive rudder to be broken and bent…..and no one noticed when it happened! I just ripped into my 44 year old rudder and was pleasantly surprised how there was a lack of rust on the spline and it has a future life….but it is not quite as strong as your rudder. I don’t think even a skeg would have benefited your rudder, and in fact might have added to the repairs. Nice article. Currently in Hout Bay.
Love Cap Town.
Merci Hugo (you have a victor first name by the way). Thanks a heap for the cool professional humble tone of your articles… it is so natural that we feel on board. I’ve been following you since your beginnings with two coloured Ecume de mer… what a trip. All of us are now in the midst of thick fog, no instruments, not knowing how the sea will look like when getting out: free waters? Rocks? Land… and which? Who knows… “ça va nous faire du changement ” Stay safe et à bientôt!
