What Do You Need Asa Sailing Certifications For?

In the United States, there are no requirements for recreational sailing, regardless of vessel size. However, insurance companies often require customers to prove their sailing experience. Having ASA certifications proves a certain level of sailing knowledge and skills. The ASA provides standards for progressive sailing certifications, including Keelboat Sailing, Small Boat Sailing, Bareboat Cruising, and Multihull Sailing. ASA Certification gives you the knowledge and experience to sail with confidence and be safe on all your sailing adventures, whether you charter a boat from a local harbor or go on an exotic sailing vacation.

To obtain ASA 101, 103, and/or 104 certifications, you will need to pass both a practical and a written exam. The most common option is to select a course with GoBaja Sailing School that covers some or all of three levels of ASA Certification: ASA 101 – Basic Keel-boat Sailing, ASA 103 – Basic Coastal Cruising, and ASA 104.

ASA Certification opens up a world of possibilities in sailing, including ASA 114, which stands as a unique certificate offering a multifaceted mastery that sets it apart. It is not necessary unless you want to buy insurance, as every insurance company will ask you for your sailing resume.

ASA 108, Offshore Passagemaking, is the ultimate in sailing education and the highest level of ASA certification. Students will participate in an offshore passage. The prerequisites for ASA 101 certification include the ability to demonstrate competencies in all knowledge and skills elements. This certificate is mandatory when chartering in most European Mediterranean waters and serves as proof of bareboat charter competency for Mediterranean waters.
