What’s the cheapest cruise you can go on?
Overall Cheapest Cruise – Carnival Cruise Line. The top prize for the most budget-friendly cruise line goes to Carnival with the incredible price of $99 per person for a 3 day Bahamas cruise onboard Carnival Conquest. Carnival markets itself as the fun cruise line, but it is also well known for value, so it’s not unexpected to see them at the top of the ratings.
Some may be surprised to know that Carnival won by a mere $1 over Royal Caribbean, whose cheapest cruise is a $100, three night cruise to Ensenada, Mexico, onboard Navigator of the Seas. For comparison purposes, the cheapest Caribbean cruise listed on the Royal Caribbean website is a 4 night Bahamas cruise on the Freedom of the Seas at $129. Still a great deal.
MSC Cruises also has competitive prices, offering a $109, three night Bahamas cruise on MSC Divina. MSC is a European cruise line that has been making major inroads in the American market with its aggressive pricing and growing fleet of ships.
What ship is docked in San Diego Bay?
Most kids love boats, so you can imagine how excited they get about a really, really big boat. Downtown San Diego’s USS Midway Museum is just that: a retired aircraft carrier that is now permanently docked and open to visitors along the city’s Embarcadero. The deck of the enormous ship is covered with naval aircraft from World War II through Operation Desert Storm—not just for looking at but for climbing inside and exploring, too. Other interactive exhibits include you-are-there-style recordings of real conversations between military pilots and a chance to ride in a flight simulator.
Also on the downtown waterfront, the Maritime Museum of San Diego is fittingly housed within one of the finest collections of historic ships in the world, including the awe-inspiring sailing ships Star of India, HMS Surprise (the floating star of Pirates of the Caribbean 4), and the Californian, a replica of a Gold Rush-era revenue cutter and the Official Tall Ship of the State of California. Coolest of all, some of the ships go sailing and whale watching, with you aboard; including a 75-minute tour of San Diego Bay aboard an aptly named, Vietnam War-era Swift Boat.
Once you’re back on land, don’t forget to stop for a smooch or a silly pose in front of theUnconditional Surrenderstatue, inspired by the famous photo of a soldier and nurse at the end of World War II. Walk farther along the waterfront and you’ll see more artwork that salutes San Diego’s military community, likethe bust of Admiral Sprague at theBattle of Leyte Gulf Memorialand theMilitary Tribute to Bob Hope, honoring the movie star’s long stint entertaining troops.

Which carrier is in San Diego?
USS Carl Vinson, homeported in San Diego, Californiais the third Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and one of only 11 operational aircraft carriers in the Navy today. Sailors’ jobs are highly varied aboard Vinson. Approximately 3,000 men and women make up the ship’s company, and they keep all parts of the aircraft carrier running. They do everything from preparing meals to handling weaponry and maintaining the nuclear reactors. Another 2,000 sailors comprise the air wing, the people who fly and maintain the aircraft aboard the ship.
Vinson, like each of the Navy’s aircraft carriers, is designed for a 50-year service life. When the air wing is embarked, the ship carries more than 60 attack fighter jets, helicopters and other aircraft, all of which take launch and land aboard the carrier at sea.
Powerful catapults slingshot the aircraft off the bow of the ship, and these same planes return to the carrier by snagging a steel cable with an arresting hook that protrudes from the rear of the aircraft. All of this makes Vinson a self-contained mobile airport and strike platform, often the first response to a global crisis because of an aircraft carrier’s ability to operate freely in international waters anywhere on the world’s oceans.

What pier does Disney cruise use in San Diego?
Janet, when you are sailing out of San Diego Pier, you’ll embark out of the Port of San Diego, B Street Pier (1140 N Harbor Drive, San Diego, California 92101). Make sure to check your designated port arrival time once you complete “My Online Check-In” in advance. I like to show up about 30 minutes before my designated port arrival time to make sure I get my parking settled, and I can determine what terminal I’m leaving out of.
Janet, I checked with a friendly Cast Member about the transaction fees, and I’m happy to share that there are no transaction fees when you exchange currency onboard. Even when you are sailing, exchange rates can fluctuate, so you will want to check those rates closer to your trip. Shopping and making purchases aboard the ship is even easier when you can charge purchases and services to your stateroom folio.
I was even amazed when I could take advantage of my Disney Visa Card perks aboard my recent cruise with 10% off select merchandise purchases of $50 or more aboard the ship when I used my Disney Visa Card. I hope these tips lead to some smooth sailing.
