Torpedo boats, originally descended from Federico Gianibellis sixteenth-century fireships, were designed to carry torpedoes into battle. The Patrol Torpedo (PT) Boat of World War II fame has a place in today’s Navy as a practical solution to the serious and vexing problem of damage inflicted on surface combatants by modern torpedos on hulls. The torpedo boat would withdraw and detonate after being rammed into an enemy ship.

The wooden and canvas canoe was designed for use on lakes and wide rivers. The graceful, upswept, sheer, long-nosed torpedo ends, paired with the right-angled torpedo ends, are known as Torpedo ends. The distance from the most forward point of the end to the center of the torpedo is approximately 20 to 25 feet.

The Torpedo boat features an exaggerated long recurve (end profile) called Torpedo ends, which keep the torpedo streamlined while in the water. The forward and after ends of a boat projecting beyond the ends of the torpedo are dome-shaped with holes to let water in and out.
