What Age Can You Start Canoeing?

Children typically begin canoeing as early as 2-5 years old, but they should also come in the company of a trustworthy and capable adult. Children aged 5 and up can start paddling a child-sized kayak, and from age 5 to 11 kids easily paddle a kayak short distances on their own with an appropriately sized kayak, paddle, and the right water conditions. The best age for children to kayak or canoe on their own is between seven and 10 years old. However, kids below seven can still enjoy a kayaking excursion if they are accompanied by an adult.

Children older than the age of 10 can start using a single rider kayak designed for children but should be on the water with an adult riding beside them. Children 14 years and older can start using a tandem kayak. Many recommend that kids start kayaking or canoeing around age 5 or 6, at which age they are usually big enough to sit in a kayak or canoe without help and have. For children under about 10 years old, it is best for them to share a tandem kayak with an adult.

There are no age limits for kayaking, and little children can go with their parents or guardians. As they get young, they are able to ride the canoe. There is no magic age for pre-toddlers and toddlers as far as being ready for the canoe, at least not when they are to sit by themselves without a paddle. A child as young as 5 or 6 can start paddling their own kayak, depending on the child and the kayak.

It is important to ask your child if they are old enough to go kayaking and what is a good age to start kayaking. Parents should plan travel times and ensure that their child is prepared for the trip.
