Should Crew Pay Dues To A Sailing Club?

The Yacht Club Sailing Club membership is declining, but it is hard to justify the cost compared to the value. The club offers various activities such as club racing, local over-night cruising, and long cruises to new distant locations. Many sailing clubs offer boat rentals, allowing members to reserve a boat with their own crew or a crew made up of other club members. Club-level memberships are for adult individuals or couples aged 21 or older and involve a commitment each year to volunteer their time.

The major benefits of joining a sailing club or organization include the Crew membership at 5 per year, which is not such a bad idea. Communication is crucial in a community boating organization, as members provide contact information. The club can also help members stay updated on yacht races and other activities.

All yacht clubs have an initiation fee and an annual membership fee. Membership dues can be paid monthly or annually, depending on the club. The more amenities and privileges a yacht club provides, the more amenities and privileges it provides. One member from each membership (i.e., one per family) is obliged to serve as a member of a Duty Crew five times per year.

This is on the Start Yachting Practical Course, which is a two-day course on a yacht intended to give you a very basic introduction to the world of sailing. RYA also also offer dinghy courses that kids can do even younger than eight, but it is unusual.

Should I join a sailing club?

Professional instruction is also available for those wishing to learn the sport of sailing. Boat usage is available for very reasonable rates. In other words, you can try sailing, get professional instruction and enjoy the use of sailboats without having to buy and maintain a boat!

A: There are hundreds of organizations including yacht clubs and community sailing programs in the United States. Each has its own specialties and target groups … some specialize in youth programs or adults, or perhaps racing or cruising, some focus on rentals. And some organizations offer all of the above.

Is sailing an expensive hobby?

One sees this question every now and then on the Internet these days, and it baffles seasoned sailors who have never really considered it seriously. Most always asked by people who have little experience with what the sport of sailing is all about, sailors find it a strange question as it is an activity that is as diverse as most any leisure activity anywhere.

It is true that at its most basic level, sailing can be pursued by most people with a small, low maintenance sailboat and limited budget. What is the 10% rule for yachts?

I’m sure most of us have heard of the “10% rule”: a boat costs about 10% of the purchase price to maintain per year. It’s usually said in the context of used boats, and it rings true to me. There’s another rule thrown around which suggests “2% of the price when new” is the rule.

So, why is sailing tied so intricately with ‘old money’?

First, owning and maintaining a yacht or a sailing boat is a costly affair.

There’s the initial purchase, the maintenance, the crew — it all adds up.

Yacht racing and sailing regattas — with their glitzy after-parties — have always been viewed as playgrounds for the upper classes.

The second reason is somewhat less tangible but equally important — the social connections that yachting and sailing foster.

Do you need a crew to sail a yacht?

Your skipper. As a minimum, you will have a Skipper for your yacht charter. Meaning, a seasoned professional skipper, or captain, will sail and navigate the boat for the whole duration of your trip. A skipper is a source of beautiful knowledge – after all, he must have sailed or cruised the area numerous times, and he knows all the hidden stunning spots, best restaurants and beaches.

So even before you start – make sure you have a chat with a skipper, discuss what you and your group are looking for. And ask questions, tell them about your preferences and tastes! The skipper will be able to adjust your sailingitinerary accordingly.

One important thing to remember, however, is that the skipper’stop priority is guests’ safety. So if you request a route that the skipper will deem dangerous (perhaps the weather has changed and you can no longer safely do the route) – it is his call and guests have to listen and oblige.

Do you need a license to sail a boat around the world?

Technically speaking, for your own boat, you do not need a license to sail the world.

A couple of howevers are attached to the “technically speaking” phrase.

Port authorities worldwide are port authorities. They have lots of power because you can’t defend yourself. They can request that you prove competence to sail in their waters. Having a License will go towards that proof. Additionally, you’re more likely to have a port authority issue if there is an accident of some sort (perhaps even not your fault) and you can’t prove competence. On top of all that, you are not exempt anywhere from the laws of that country when in their country so if you are lacking in their government-required amount of fire extinguishers, for example, then without a license you are essentially proving that you don’t know what you’re doing (even if you do). Wisely speaking – you don’t want to get in trouble with a port authority.

In addition, more recently on Facebook groups, there is chatter about certain port authorities enforcing a license requirement on everyone. Some boat owners have been fined and asked to leave. We recommend that when traveling to various locations unfamiliar to you that you join a local sailing Facebook group. There you will get real-time live information.

Going through the proper procedure to gain a proper license like the NauticEd SLCor even the RYA Yacht Master program means you’re going to be properly prepared and documented as such. Do yacht crews get paid besides tips?

Yes, yacht crew are paid a monthly salary. However they can expect to receive tips in addition to their basic take home in certain circumstances. The average yacht salary for a deckhand or a junior stewardess, for instance, generally ranges between £2000 to £2700 per month.

Receiving tips in any line of work is a very motivating and rewarding aspect of any job.

In the case of yacht crew, tips can greatly add to what is already a very generous basic salary.

But how much do yachties typically receive as tips from guests aboard superyachts?

On a luxury charter, tipping depends on the quality of service you receive. Generally, people tip around 10-20 percentof the charter’s total cost. Note that the captain might distribute a percentage of the tip to the rest of their crew, depending on their contributions and duration of service.

We employee crew and best money we spend. I realize it’s not affordable for all as boating isn’t affordable for the majority. But for one’s blood to boil if it’s something they could afford strikes me as a bit much. Do you ever fly? Does your blood boil at what the pilots make? It’s a profession that deserves reasonable compensation. What about business executives? Much of life is about how and where we spend out money. When younger we saved and spent little we didn’t need to, although we still had a boat. Now, in retirement, we spend on things that make our life better and boat crew is sure a big part of that.
