Is travel insurance still required in the Philippines?
The Philippines has removed its travel insurance requirements and negative Covid-19 test requirements for fully vaccinated travelers, but unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travelers may still need to meet entry requirements. Squaremouth recommends all travelers to purchase a minimum of $50, 000 in Emergency Medical coverage, which covers Covid-19 and other unforeseen illnesses and injuries during their trip. These requirements are subject to change, so it’s recommended to check with the official government travel advisory before departing.
Can you buy travel insurance at the airport?
Travel insurance policies can be purchased at the airport before boarding a plane, but most insurers only offer coverage until customs clearance is completed. Post-departure policies are not available once the trip is halfway through, but still provide coverage for essential expenses like medical care, repatriation, and lost baggage. Cover usually starts the day you buy your policy or leave for your trip, which may be the same day.
What is covered under travel insurance?
Travel insurance provides coverage for a range of contingencies, including the possibility of cancellation, medical expenses, evacuation, loss or delays, and offers 24/7 assistance. It offers protection against the aforementioned contingencies.
What’s the best travel insurance for the Philippines?
Travel insurance is not legally required to visit the Philippines, but it is strongly recommended to purchase a policy. Top picks for travel insurance include Tin Leg, Seven Corners, and Generali Global Assistance. It is crucial to have travel medical insurance as US private insurance and Medicare won’t work in the Philippines. Travel insurance can protect against medical emergencies, flight delays, trip interruptions, luggage loss, and other unexpected events.
An online comparison tool can help find the right insurance for your trip. While US health insurance won’t be valid during your vacation, a travel insurance policy can minimize losses in the event of a medical emergency or other covered event.
How much in advance should I get travel insurance?
Travel insurance can be purchased anytime before your trip date, but it’s best to buy it as soon as you make your reservations. The sooner you buy, the more protection and benefits you may receive. Understanding the basics of travel insurance, why you need it, and what to look for in a plan is crucial.

Travel insurance provides protection and benefits, making it a wise investment for your trip.
Do you get all your money back with travel insurance?
In the event of a cancellation of a trip for a reason covered by the insurance plan, a refund will be issued for all prepaid and non-refundable costs, with the exception of the cost of the insurance plan itself. To cancel your plan, navigate to the MyAccount portal and submit a cancellation request within the designated free look period. Should further clarification be required, it is recommended that licensed insurance professionals in the United States be consulted.
Can you buy travel insurance after flying?
Travel insurance can be purchased after leaving home for a trip, but it won’t cover any medical issues that happened before the purchase. The insurance usually provides coverage after a waiting period. If you have a medical crisis but didn’t buy it earlier, it’s too late to get coverage. Travel health insurance only covers illness or injury that happens after the purchase, and you can’t buy a plan when you get sick or injured to get those expenses covered.
Some insurers may also not sell health insurance after the trip has started or place limits on coverage for pre-existing conditions. Therefore, it’s advisable to buy medical travel insurance before you need it.
How much does travel insurance cost?
The average cost of a standard travel insurance policy is $221, according to MarketWatch Guides research. Travel insurance costs range from 3 to 14 of a trip’s total value, with a $1, 000 trip costing $30 to $140 and a $5, 000 trip costing $150 to $700. Im here in the Philippines arrive on March 19th. Is was so easy when you have all the documents. Travel insurance: i have kaiser insurance. Same thing with the guy, they don’t mention the specifics because it was already made like that. I told them what the airlines requires, kaiser said they can do it but it will take few weeks. My departure will be in 2 dqys. I dont want to risk it. So i looked for a travel insurance. It cost me 45 dollars. They sent me the insurance policy but not the letter that mentioned about covid and the $35,000 coverage. I have to call them and ask for the letter. So thats extra step for me to do. They sent it right away. It was a.relief. I took ANA airlines not PAL though. Id rather pay 45dollars than risk it.! In the airport, don’t really know what they will do if i didn’t give the travel insurance because i put everything inside my passport when they asked for my documents . I dont think that is Philippine goverment involved on this because they didn’t give any airlines a list of travel insurance companies where you need to purchase it.. lolo is right, just buy the cheapest
My comment is,i’m living in Germany, and we all have travel insurance, which is for the whole World!my point is this insurance is no amount Limit! But if am hospitalize in Philippine, i have to pay Cash, later if im going back to Germany, i have to refund the amount! So what for to make Extra, which specific for covid 19?
I know you need travel insurance to enter the Philippines so if I get just one month that will be ok but when I leave Philippines will the airlines ask to check for my insurance again because I intend to stay in the Philippines for 6 months but just buy one month insurance thanks await your answer keep up the good work you are doing 🏖🇬🇧
Hi grandpa, just sharing my experiences with PAL, we live in manila, my partner is balikbayan with Australian passport, he’s going to Australia for one month, when he returns he needs medical insurance to enter, we tried with PAL insurance because he is flying with PAL. We thought it would make things easier, But they said they don’t insure people coming into Philippines, they only insure people leaving the Philippines, and is only good when you are outside the Philippines, as soon as you come back your insurance is finished. They told me to find another insurance company in Australia. Traveling has become so stressful now .
Maybe not to the country but to some unscrupulous personality, foreigner or not, who owns shares with insurance industry who will definitely have their operators/agents reap the influx of requests and remuneration that goes with the premium collection. Is it necessary? Maybe and maybe not. I hope no one have to avail of such health coverage while visiting our homeland. It may cause the door to close once again. Thank you 🙏 keep info coming.
Mr. Vlogger Grandpa, I have a question: Here in Nevada, USA they issue CDC White Card for those of us who are getting Covid-19 Vaccination. My question Is this CDC White Card is acceptable in Manila, Philippines 🇵🇭 as Valid Card who are vaccinated with Pfizer vaccine? I hope Sir that you will be able to read my text… Thank you and God bless you 🙏🙏❤️
Hi vlogger grandpa, Thank you for all the travel informations you share with us. I have the letter from my medical insurance that says I’m covered worldwide for urgent/emergent needs but does not state for Covid treatment nor the minimum of 35,000.00. I called my insurance three times but not given reassurance.I am leaving soon and I don’t want hassle at the airport and do not want to miss the flight.i can get a month insurance because as I said I have a coverage worldwide, but will stay in the Philippines for 85 days. Can I just get the month worth of insurance? Please advise.Thank you
Good advice Danny. We just got back from 3 months in the Philippines a week and a half ago and to be honest, because of this travel insurance issue I was really tempted to just change our date of return or not come back at all because of not knowing if we’ll be stuck with buying insurance when we go back to our condo again (probably about the middle of this October).
I want to share this because I want others to know this is not hopeless. I just put my mom on Singapore Airlines tonight and they accepted Kaiser’s evidence of covereage letter that I requested from them. They did not even ask to see her member card. Kaiser wrote that this was an evidence of coverage verification and that she was a member and had been one since 1999, continues to be a member and they listed a telephone number for anyone to call to verify the information. They did not delay my mother at the check-in counter. I think they understand “coverage” and “insured” over at Singapore Airlines. Thank you Singapore Airlines for treating us right. Please tell me who is getting away with anything? She is insured for everything anyone can get and she has no “max” and Kaiser was not willing to state some random number that I provided. We went to an airline that understands the language of the letter from Kaiser. Who knows, maybe they also have Kaiser as an option for healthcare at Singapore Airlines (possibly their local employees) and they know that health insurance is worldwide. I think it is shameful to force poor, old seniors on fixed incomes to have to spend good money on something they don’t need like this additional, unnecessary insurance and hold that over them as if saying “or else.” I think that is what you do when you hold this over them causing them great anxiety. I used a travel agent who advised me all they way to the travel date. I will also update this lady and let her know exactly the words on the one sentence Kaiser letter so that she can help the next people after me.
Hello Grandpa Vlogger: Travel Insurance requirement of $35,000. How about carrying a cashiers check of that amount issued under your name by any financial institution like BANKS OR CREDIT UNION will that be acceptable in lieu of that TRAVEL INSURANCE REQUIREMENT of the same equal amount. I do have medical insurance coverage under KAISER PERMANENTE and MEDICARE. Also i’m a Veteran and have my DD-214 picture in my cell phone if required to show. Please let me know if this idea is acceptable.
i am 67 yrs old and i have all kind of health insurance that can cover me any where in the world, i was about to travel philippines in month of march but i decided not to just because of this travel insurance B S because i have to pay 160 dollers for me and my wife, i will newer travel country who requires travel insurance and i tell other people too
Hello Grandpa. It all depends on LUCK and who is behind the counter on the day of your flight and on arrival in the Philippines. It’s like a Russian Roulette. Some are very lucky some are not so lucky. I am excepted to have travel insurance. I have emergency coverage with my medical insurance but I bought the cheapest travel insurance last week that covers up to $50,000. Other reasons why I bought it so I have coverage for trip cancellations, trip interruptions and trip delays. Travel protocols, restrictions and Covid rules are constantly changing in the Philippines by the IATF, DOT and BOQ. Shop for the cheapest one. Good Luck and happy travels guys.
Requiring or forcing Balikbayans/ tourists to get travel insurance by the Phil Gov’t makes no sense at all. We all know that anyone who gets sick for any reasons (including Covid-19) that seeks medical treatment in most, if not all hospitals, clinics, and doctors, none of them will accept your travel insurance as a form of payment for service! They want you to pay in cash before they will even render treatment. No cash means no treatment! It’s just one of the many stupid examples Philippine gov’t bureaucrats still exist in the Phils. It’s shameful that these morons are holding those positions. They’re good and mastered implementing casseroles of nonsense!!! They enforce travel requirements without thoroughly thinking that it causes hardship and difficulty to potential travelers. — Thank you Grandpa, for your countless informative and useful vlogs! L.A. Pinoy Traveler
Sorry Grandpa…you’re asking them to think….when you say you have a million dollars emergency coverage…she can’t connect the dots that a million $$ is more than $35k. She is only able to see: “must have $35k in covid insurance” End of story. A million dollars emergency, international health insurance coverage….well they’re just not able to think and compute it all…..so yes….simply buy $35k covid insurance on top of already being covered…because the philippines is full of idiots with no comprehension abilities.
Even if its not checked, are you going to take the risk beacuse the immigration officer can send you straight back to your country 20 hours travel beacuse its not acceptable.. The reason they made it a free visa on arrival for certain country’s such as USA and UK was beacuse they want to make it easy and hassle free for those with money to visit. However with the new rules if you treat those who who have money like USA and UK with hostile requirements and even refuse entry it will harm the reputation of the Philippines. People from USA expect good treatment immigration and if you treat them bad they will not come back as they don’t expect hostile rules. The government don’t care they will refuse and for everyone they refuse they will tell 100 people about there bad experience and the philippines will no longer be a place that people talk about as a nice place to visit. The first rule of business is to keep a good reputation. Philippines mo longer consider travel as business.
Vlogger grandpa I found a policy on world trip for $50,000 coverage for any medical and Covid specific for $55 to include medical evacuation, repatriation of remains and I’m 68 yrs old. The policy specifally states coverage for Philippines, what I also did was printed my medical coverage letter from Tricare for Life since I’m retired military as backup because it only states coverage for any medical emergency with no dollar amount because it’s world wide and I know I will be in the Philippines beyond 30 days and this will cover me. Even though the Phil government is requiring 35k my question is how did they come up with this dollar amount? Covid treatment could exceed that.
That’s is a super idea. Get the cheapest insurance there is and we’re good to go. I wonder if it is a fake? We are meeting the insurance requirement. Should I be hospitalized, I pay up or can’t be released. I’ll turn in the damage to my insurance company where I came from and I’ll get reimbursed. The newly purchased insurance could be nowhere to be found . Just a thought. Maraming salamat po.
Dear Grandpa Vlogger, that is what we did, I bought a a 30 days travel insurance but my husband and I will be staying here for 6 months. I made sure I have a copy of my US insurance with me ( global coverage). Japan Airlines attendant at LAX did checked the $ amount coverage but did not check my return ticket in September.NAIA agents are more concern of your One Health Pass, vaccination card and negative PCR results.
Good day. A friend suggested your page to help me understand the policies to help my wife travel to the Philippines next month alone for the first time. For weeks, I’ve stressed out trying to figure out what is required to pass the first test at the ticket counter to board the plane. I’ve done my research and asked questions to MactanCebu international Airport for my wife’s return trip. To asking the Bureau of Immigration to clarify the requirements to departing the Philippines via Cebu/Manila. It’s obvious to me that these arrival/departure requirements are listed and clear. As for the travel insurance, again doing research and contacting various travel insurance companies. Many have a problem with actually listing/showing the required statements to meet the requirements of the Philippines. As an example, a insurance company tried to tell me that they would generate a cover letter that this travel insurance “meets” the requirements of the Philippines. They would not specifically state the “COVID19 Travel Insurance for $35,00.00”. A response from a Filipina who gave me her insurance experience said that the required statement was on page 22 of her policy. IMHO, if insurance companies desire the business that is now required to meet the Philippines policies, then they should be willing to provide the required information/statements on the front page. For me, I refuse to carry with me a insurance policy that is extremely long in pages just to finally get to page 22 to see “COVID19 TRAVEL INSURANCE FOR $35,000.
Are other airlines also requiring this travel insurance or is it just the philippine airlines? Why need a travel insurance when hospitals and doctors in the philippines requires patient CASH payment up front before and after treatment. I think this is just Another form of a Scam by the philippine government officials there. I know them scumbags are gettin kickbacks frm this Fckn travel insurance Bulcrap!!
Hi Vlogger Grandpa, I had an experience in the Philippines that I would like to share with you. Some time ago, I got sick in the Philippines and was admitted to the emergency. I do have Health insurance, I am from the United States. Upon checking in I presented them my health insurance card, to my surprise the hospital would not accept it. They wanted cash only. I did pay my bill in cash. Years after, my ex-wife was admitted to the Asian Hospital, the same experience happened on Cash only basis. My question is, what is the use of having travel insurance if hospitals in the Philippines only accept cash? My health insurance in the United States did reimburse me for my hospital expenses upon arriving back in the U.S. Please ask the hospitals in the Philippines if they do accept Travel insurance in case of covid illness. While the U.S. is now doing away with mask mandate, other countries like Spain, France, and some Asian countries, etc. are doing away with covid restrictions, the Philippines is adding additional red tape to make a little income for who? Actually, tourists spend over 2 to 5 thousand dollars per visit in the Philippines, a big additional income for the Philippine economy but putting an added red tape or restrictions like travel insurance is restricting growth for the Philippine economy like Tourism.
I already have emergency coverage ( unlimited ) for international travel ( limited to 60 days overseas) through my benefit plan at work — although the letter I got did specify Covid19 treatment is included (this after an hour spent on the phone with customer service of my benefit provider), letter does not/will not state the $35 k minimum ( exactly the same story as related by others in this vlog) . Today, I was on the verge of buying extra insurance which will set me back an extra $220 ( sizable amount for me considering I already paid so much for plane fare) but after perusal this article, I think I will have another go at convincing my insurance provider to put that magic number of $35 K US ( or $50 K Cdn) on the letter.😊
This is a very stupidvtravel insurance requirement for covid, really. Like you said grandpa you have enough money to cover for any medical emergency while in the philippines. So what seems to be the problem. And they should know as well that when we get sick while travelling, we have to pay upfront anyway, and after we submit all medical records to our insurance is when we get the refund.. In summary these people at PAL and officials who are issuing this rule have no understanding of insurance. Most of our insurances in the US will cover emergencies out of the country.
The more the Philippines keeps playing these games…the more money they loose! I’m a Navy Veteran covered by the VA and also have Medicare. I refuse to get anything else. Period! My wife and I are in no hurry to play ridiculous games. In actuality, it’s probably a blessing in disguise. With this conflict going on, we are much safer here in the States. When China walks in and takes over the Philippines, we don’t want to be there. It’s coming…just a matter of time!
Hi Grandpa, I have a friend from California who went home to the Philippines about 2 weeks ago. I had asked her if she bought a travel insurance as part of the requirements but she told me that she doesn’t have to get one, it is not required if you are a Filipino citizen and in her case she has dual citizenship. In fact she doesn’t even have a Philippine passport yet, she just had with her a copy of her Filipino citizenship certificate. She also mentioned that she only took a RT PCR test within 48 hrs before departure and need to fill up onehealthpass for the bureau of quarantine. Hope this information helps. I appreciate all your vloggs, grandpa! Take care and stay safe! Aloha
Aloha Grandpa, you where saying about why not get just a cheap travel insurance but will the cheapest travel insurance will cover 35 thousand 🤔 because 35 thousand dollars worth of insurance is alot, because I called my insurance company Humana and they said the same about I’m covered at the imergency room and they don’t have the amount they said it’s unlimited, don’t know what to do…Aloha from Hawaii
OK I just flew to the Philippines March 2 . First when getting travel insurance get a high deductible then it’s cheaper. Plus what I did is got my insurance printed out the email of my insurance then called the insurance company and cancelled my insurance and got my money back. The airlines don’t know. It’s all a bunch of BS anyway
I plan to buy only a one month policy, even though I’ll be staying for three months, and here’s why. I contacted the BI office in Legazpi asking them if they would be looking at my travel insurance arrangements for the duration of my stay and they told me that they have no instructions for them concerning this issue. In other words, I infer that that they will not be checking my insurance coverage or whether I even have any because there are no directives for them to do so.
What a timely post…I was on the phone with my medical insurance provider (United Healthcare) when I saw the subject matter of this vlog. They are faxing me, and mailing me something that shows I have unlimited coverage while overseas (I should. I pay almost $1K a month for my policy)…My concern is that it will be too ambiguous, and the person at the airport will not have a clue what it says…I’ll keep you posted. I am 3 weeks from my SFO-MNL trip. I keep wondering what PAL’s own travel insurance offers? The last person I talked to at PAL didnt have a clue, and the San Francisco sales office hasnt returned an email yet…really poor customer service in SFO…Salamat
Thank you again. However I’m in NZ and I cannot find one insurance company that will ammend their policies to include the required wording. Only place that will do it is New Zealand Airlines, yes and at extortionate costs. Crazy money. So I hope that what you come up with will entertain a NZ citizen too. I look forward to your next article. ( A throw away piece of paper will suffice)
Yes, you are right! Not worth the hassle; however, problem with the Philippine government and people interpreting the policy/rules go overboard! That in itself is ridiculous…Why make it harder when the economy relies on tourism and people spending their hard-earned money? What can I say? Only in the Philippines…sad and disheartening!
Thanks for the article. I’ve spent at least 6 months a yr in the Philippines since 2008, except the last yr during Covid. I last left the Philippines in December 2020. I’m look forward to being in the Philippines again to experience the kind polite Filipino people. However, I’m not going again until all Covid restrictions are lifted except for being triple vaccinated already. Many experts feel Covid is an epidemic now that is no more dangerous than common flu. Hopefully, things will be more or less normal again by the end of the year.
this is a NONSENSE ENTRY REQUIREMENT being enforced by the BWAYAS, When did they start to know about TRAVEL INSURANCE . hahaha, first of all before you get admitted to the hospital they will require you to DEPOSIT CASH, NOT Travel Insurance card, The word is ” CASH “” and more CASH they asked during your hospital stay, and final ‘ CASH ” to settle every penny when you’re discharge, that is why this Travel Insurance they are requiring is ALL CRAP . When did a hospital in the Philippines ever ask you for your Travel Insurance, they do not need the DAMN card, they need CASH !!! It’s all up to the person to get travel insurance or not, it’s her/his own prerogative, one way to refund hospital expenses but NOT to be enforced as ‘requirement ” for ENTRY . Again this is another sick protocol NO TRAVEL INSURANCE with specifics of $ 35,000.00 Covid 19 coverage, NO ENTRY !!!!!You people what is next to require, isip isip, kailangan yong maraming Komisyon pang bulsa .
