Save a bunch of money at Marshalls with these 10 amazing secrets I discovered! Everyone knows Marshalls is the place for shoes …
Love this! I use to work at Marshall’s and was head of the mark down team. So most of your insight is correct. The box all the way to the right that you were inquiring about is the Month code. Now the number next to that is an imperfection code. Scale 1-10, 1 being the lowest of imperfections 10 obviously being the highest imperfection.
I was a manager at Marshall’s almost 30 years ago! From what I can tell, not much has changed. I used to apply red and yellow labels to tags from a machine that read the upc called a “digimatic”. I often had a crowd following behind me to see the new prices. I still shop and enjoy Marshall’s. Thanks for the article! 🙂
I work at Wendy’s. Our franchise gives senior discounts. However, only if the customer asks for it. As a drive through cashier, I often come across nasty customers because of the wait time. (Thanks covid and staff shortage) I will smile, and apologize, offering them a 10% discount. Not everyone can do that. My point being, please be kind to staff. They’re more likely to help you out if you’re not cussing them out. Another great article, Matt!
I love Marshall’s and I was there in January too for their beauty clearance. I always check expiration dates on my beauty products especially SPF. I got some full size shower gels for $2 on the yellow tags.. I also found that Marshall’s and TJ Maxx/HomeGoods have cheaper cleaning products. They sometimes have Method brands for $1-2 less than Target/Wal-Mart
Excellent article as usual. In Canada, our CBC Market Place investigative news did an undercover story where they discovered that the ‘original price’ on these tags is completely made up by the stores and has nothing to do with reality. They also discovered that most of the high end fashion for outlets and these stores is produced differently and more cheaply than the items for the brand retail locations.
I work in grocery retail. If you are kind and polite to the staff/managers on a regular basis, we are FAR more lively to give a deal or a better offer (if available)… Not that I don’t go above and beyond but the regulars get an extra ‘plus’ on the effort. We’re all humans and it pays to be kind and courteous.
My sister and I just bought 3 giant bottles of body wash at Marshall’s where she lives and only spent 15$ for all 3. All were on sale in the clearance section. And I found socks and hair conditioner that had ridiculously low prices and all the things we bought are super nice! And everything had seals on them so they hadn’t been opened at all. Love your show! 👍
I used to be a guerilla shopper at Marshall’s back in the day! I actually used to turn that advice about high end products in higher end areas on its head, particularly with children’s clothing. I found that the more expensive kids’ items seemed to be fairly evenly distributed to all the stores, but were less likely to sell in the more “average” income area stores. So I would haunt those stores for the red and yellow tickets and pick up gorgeous clothes for a song. In the ladies department, I could pick up labels like Cole Haan, etc for a great price! They’d be passed over because a great red ticket price on those items was still well above the normal ticket price on everything else and many would be unfamiliar with the brands.
Matt are hysterical!!!! So glad to see this I have a credit at Marshall’s since before Covid… and I can literally walk there!! Now you’ve given me the “ready”. I’m arms with all your great info on tags, times, and lingo to get some things I’ve been holding off on! As always your reviews save us money and the disappointment of products that just don’t live up to our expectations! Love you! 💕🤗❤️😍
Always great to see you Matt. I shop Marshall’s, but more often TJ Maxx because it’s closer to my shopping area. Do the rules apply to their sister store as well ? I love these tips and love you as well for helping your viewers save money as the price of consumables rapidly increase. Keep up the good work my friend and “Hello” to your wife and daughter as well ! Long time viewer 😊
We went on a cruise in January of 2019 so in August of 2018, my cousin & I went to Marshalls to find clothes for the cruise & got some incredible deals because, like nearly every store in the northern hemisphere, they were trying to clear the summer stuff to transition to fall & ‘back to school’ stuff.
My daughter recently started working at our local Marshall’s and I found it interesting that once they mark down their holiday items and after a certain amount of time they throw those items in their dumpster….I would think they would at least offer it to employees. Anyway, my point is I have noticed on tiktok there are people who hit local dumpsters for stuff like that and if clean and in good condition they are able to make up lots of goody bags to take to shelters or give to homeless folks…..so Marshall’s may be a good place to start checking after certain holidays. Not sure if regular merch goes in the dump or just holiday items and not sure if there are consequences if caught but may be worth a try?
I love your articles. Your enthusiasm is great. I wish I’d seen this article earlier. I went to Marshall’s today for the first time. I found a purse that was marked down. The lining inside the bag is a little loose and the zipper parts in the middle but since it was red tag i didn’t think about asking for a further discount. Your info is valuable. BLESSINGS to you and family too You are good at what you do 👍🏾😉
Pro tip about online returns from a cashier: 1. KEEP YOUR RECEIPT! The cashier cannot process the return without a receipt in the case of an online return. (At least at my store) 2. Make sure you keep the bag(s) the item(s) you ordered came in. Those bags have a barcode on them that is used to process the return because the item itself will not have a Marshalls tag on it. The cashier will not have an easy time processing the return without it, and sometimes will not be able to process the return at all if their return machine can’t find the item in the system.
Love your tips as always. The one thing I have noticed in marshall’s, TJ maxx, HomeGoods… Is that they usually will put a sticker over the expiration date. Most times, anyway🤔😬. One of the cashiers even admitted that you have to watch the expiration dates on their beauty products. I guess the only thing you could do is buy it and carefully look under the sticker and return it if it’s old 🙏👍
As a former Marshall’s department supervisor. The pricing of damaged items there is a very important guide list that basically gives the amount of discount on an item based on the damage. I wouldn’t use that box number tip. It’s not generally a good indicator of price drops. It’s really is based on how long the sku (not to the item) will drop in price. Hence the reason why you could find the same item in clearance. It’s based on the sku.
Thanks for this one Matt,Marshall’s is my favourite store,I just love the unique and diverse products they have and will quite happily spend more time in one than any other store,as my hubby can testify! 😉😆 Great tips to save even more and what to look for on tags, just the most helpful guy and one I would love to go shopping with! ☺️🛍🛍🛍
Irregular usually means the vendor doesn’t want regular retailers to get mad at them for selling to off price. So Levi’s tells macys not to worry, it ‘irregularl’. Nothing irregular about it. They’d go outta business if they kept making irregular stuff. The number in the box is the month code. January is 1, December is 12. Usually a 2 year rotation. All items are distributed to all stores. There are no high end stores. Stores that sell high end goods faster than others might get more ship back and broader assortment. Some vendors make items for off price but on the same factory lines with the same materials. Maybe a different hue/color. Or only in white where dept stores get colors. But same quality all around. Different prices for same item in different stores is only because item was bought in an assortment at different times so last purchase got a better price and it was passed along. TJX companies do not track items by sku only by categories. Hope that helps.
We have a strip of the stores where there is a HomeGoods, TJ Maxx and a marshals, you can walk through the three stores inside it’s kind of cool. However I have noticed just on my own that I have found things like a picture frame and it was the identical frame yet each store it was priced differently which led me to believe at first oh this store is more expensive than the other ones but then I found a different item and they were cheaper on that item it’s like they have no rhyme or reason to who is more expensive or which ones the cheapest. It’s a crapshoot and you just have to shop like crazy and who doesn’t love that? LOL Have you gone to one of the new Habitat for Humanity‘s stores? They say they are 85% new products & the other 15 are donated from regular people but I did not find that to be true. They have some really cool stuff especially if you’re doing a project within your home, they have brand new cabinets, doors, sinks and bathtubs even tile and gloves miscellaneous tools. They also have furniture and pictures, this is where I had a hard time finding any new furniture and the pictures were way over priced but they do have a sticker system so may be a lot of that was 50% off I don’t know. I was just disappointed because the commercials I have seen they were showing a pottery barn desk and dresser & the desk was $200 but at Pottery Barn it was $1200 or something and I found nothing close to that. It is cool to go and find out what’s there and they get new stuff every day.
I’m going to really date myself now but I remember when Marshalls pretty much started out. My mom took me there because they had Levi pants there (they were all the rage back in my day) and we couldn’t afford them in the (what I called) real stores. Back then they’d actually cut off the little Levi tag by the pack pocket as well as cut out the majority of the bigger patch by the waistband. I assume they didn’t have the rights from Levi to sell their product as is so they cut them out. Now the place is full of designer stuff. Oh and needless to say I has relentlessly made fun of because of my Levi’s being weird. Gotta love mom…..lol
Damaged items always depends on the manager. I once got a set of champagne flutes and when I opened the box to check, it was very clear that they were used(they were cleaned but had water marks everywhere). They asked me if I still wanted them and cut the price in 1/2!!! I was still going to wash them obviously so it worked great for me!
I’ll see a product at Marshall’s in the clearance section with the same number in the box as other clearance items, but without a red/yellow tag. I’ll ask an employee at checkout to see if this should have a clearance tag. Most employees will say no and won’t double check the price of an item. They’ll usually say someone put it in the clearance section. Any tips on how to get them to double check the price? Thanks for the article!
Unless they’ve made a change in the last few years Marshalls actually has two different types of yellow tags. The bright yellow shown in the article here, and the paler yellow. The pale yellow is meant to indicate to the employees that the item in intended for the queue line. That stuff inside and outside of the line you go through and stand in to get to check out. Thing is there isn’t always room in the queue for all of the new items so the pale yellow sticker/ticket items end up in the appropriate department throughout the store. Mostly beauty, travel, electronics, and home. So many nail polishes. So many. But paler yellow tagged item can end up being marked down like everything else in the store, with a red or eventually bright yellow tag. Just to clear up the difference, if it’s still a thing.
I bought some Levi’s jeans that said irregular and couldn’t figure out what was wrong with them. I did noticed a strong dye smell. I washed them 5 times trying vinegar, downy, different types of detergent and nothing. I saw online about put them out on the sun for a while and the smell went away for the most part. 😅
Matt! Big hello from Canada. I know you are in America, but I still pay attention to a lot of what you say about Walmart and Costco. Something I’m sure you already know, in all Big Box stores, Home Depot, Lowe’s, anyone! If you bring an item back because it does not work, they will put it right back out on the shelf for someone else to deal with!! Any box that has been repaired, just do not buy it!
You are funny! Here in Canada there doesn’t seem to be a time limit for returns without a receipt. As long as item has the tag/sticker price still on it you can return it and get a refund as a gift card. However if you purchase in the USA you cannot return it in Canada as the sku isn’t recognized by the system
Hi Deal Guy, I liked all the stuff you showed, here. And there were parts that you made me laugh. And I didn’t expect that. So, that made my day for the better. I hope your day is a good one. Bye for now. Stay Safe. Sincerely, Elsa R. (From out in California). Looking forward to your next article. Bye.
Great article. Lots of info that’s helpful. Marshalls and tjmaxx beauty is gross. That is the one part of the store I wouldn’t purchase anything from.on the other hand you can find clothes that are well discounted. Just purchased a dress for my daughter that went from 1,500 for only $550 that’s a big discount.
I won’t shop in Marshall’s anymore and it is basically the only store to shop in my tiny town because they fired me after working there a week. Well they didn’t even fire me which would of been better they just didn’t put me on the schedule anymore. The only reason they fired me is because I have a disability. I have a brain injury and I lost 50% of my hearing in both ears. Well I lost 49% in one ear and 50% in the other ear
ANOTHER website not mentioning an IMPORTANT fact…. Marshalls and TJ Maxx USE to be good places for real actual name brand and designer content. Cause it USE to be for overstock and such. But since they became so popular…actual full quality designer stuff is few and far inbetween. While the stuff is not knock offs and technically legit brands, they are actually made SPECIFICALLY for marshalls and TJ Max now..like any other store like Macys or what not. They arent overstock. And because of the much lower prices, its usually less quality. Worse stiching that gets undone sooner. Thinner or less quality fabrics, etc… Getting say..a Guess brand item at marshalls is def NOT like getting a Guess brand item at a proper store.
I discovered the difference in quality of clothing from one town to the next at Marshall’s. I think it is disgusting and racist. In the suburbs I found really nice clothes, major labels etc. In the town I live in, there was mostly garbage brands, irregulars and not nearly the selection that I found in the suburbs. My area is mostly Black, Hispanic and Eastern European immigrants. Apparently Marshall’s doesn’t think they deserve to wear major brands and first quality garments. I have stopped buying from them as a result. I have also written letters to their corporate management on this subject. I think people need to know that they are supporting racist behavior by shopping at Marshalls.
