Is There Still A Presidential Yacht?

The US hasn’t had a presidential yacht since 1977, and an ambitious plan to restore the former iconic yacht, USS Sequoia, is expected to begin by next spring. The USS Sequoia was used during the administrations of Herbert Hoover through Jimmy Carter, setting a cost-cutting example. Carter ordered her sold in Potomac, which currently resides in San Francisco Bay, California. The 165-footer (50.3-meter) rose to nationwide prominence.

The USS Sequoia is a dilapidated, raccoon-infested wooden yacht that was once the floating White House for eight US presidents. Design veteran Jack Fhillips embarked on a three-year historic restoration to preserve it. Formally decommissioned on December 9, 1935, by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Sequoia continues to carry its USS designation.

One of two US Presidential yachts that still survives to this day and the only one open to the public, USS Potomac, was used by Franklin D. Roosevelt as his presidential yacht. The last presidential yacht was sold at public auction in 1977. Today, Sequoia and Potomac are the only two former presidential yachts still in existence. Potomac went through several different owners after its sale in 1977.

The USS Sequoia was used by nine U.S. Presidents between 1931 and 1977, including Herbert C. Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The USS Sequoia was also used by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to dedicate the original Choptank River Bridge, funded by the New Deal.

Does Mark Zuckerberg have a yacht?

Mark Zuckerberg’s new yacht, Launchpad, is enjoying its summer debut. The megayacht recently stopped in Mallorca and has since ventured further into the Mediterranean. It looks like Zuckerberg may dethrone Jeff Bezos as king of this year’s superyacht season.

While the Amazon founder made waves last year with the debut of his megayacht Koru, Zuckerberg is the name on the yacht world’s lips this season.

By May, the transaction seemed all but confirmed when both the yacht and Zuckerberg made their way to Panama to celebrate his 40th birthday with a fete that included a few spins on his infamous hydrofoil.

Now that summer is here, Zuckerberg has debuted Launchpad —and her support superyacht Wingman — on the biggest stage in the yachting world: the Mediterranean.

Who got rid of the presidential yacht?

The Voyage to an NHL Designation. Ultimately, it was President Jimmy Carter who decided to dispose of USS Sequoia and sell the yacht as a part of his efforts to have a less “extravagant” presidency. On May 18, 1977, the USS Sequoia was sold at public auction to a private owner. The vessel had a series of private owners and underwent a 1977-1978 rehabilitation.

Sequoia was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987, as a space used by the presidential office for politics, diplomacy, and social events for almost five decades. It was also witness to some of the most important decisions and actions of United State’s leaders in the last 100 years.

Since 1987, the Sequoia has passed through the hands of several private owners and has served various purposes. Today, the USS Sequoia is privately owned and is undergoing restoration with the goal of reopening the vessel for public access.

What yacht does Bill Gates have?

In 2021, Gates took delivery of what would become his starter yacht, Wayfinder. Measuring 224 feet (68.2 meters) in length and built at the cost of “just” $25 million by Astilleros Armon, Wayfinder is a Shadowcat, which means it’s a catamaran designed as a shadow vessel. Until just now, it was unclear exactly what Wayfinder was shadowing since no one seemed to be aware of the existence of a mothership.

That mothership, according to eSysman Superyachts who cites sources inside Feadship, is Project 821, currently under construction at the shipyard. Project 821 is a gigantic vessel with a 2024 delivery date, with a total length on water of 390 feet (119 meters) and an interior volume of over 7,000 GT. Until now, Project 821 has been closely kept under wraps.

Technically, it’s still being kept under wraps, but this seemed to have slipped through the cracks: Gates is selling it.

Where is FDR’s yacht?

USS Potomac and USSSequoia are the last two existing U.S. presidential yachts, after USSWilliamsburg was scrapped in January 2016. Potomac is now preserved in Oakland, California, as a National Historic Landmark and the only presidential yacht open to the public.

Potomac was built in 1934 by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, as the United States Coast Guard Cutter Electra. Commissioned on October 25, 1934, Electra was a submarine chaser that served in anti-bootlegging operations. She was chosen to be the new presidential yacht after the Secret Service deemed USSSequoia a fire hazard. The thought of having a wooden boat that could easily catch fire was not appealing to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who as a child witnessed his aunt burn to death in an oil lamp accident. He also wanted a vessel in which he could move independently and take fishing trips. Electra was officially renamed USS Potomac on January 30, 1936, converted to serve as a presidential yacht and commissioned into the United States Navy on March 2, 1936.

There were approximately $60,000 in upgrades made while converting the ship into a presidential yacht, to make the vessel wheelchair-accessible and more accommodating. These upgrades included the conversion of the aft smokestack to a false one, a new salon, installation of brass fixtures, the presidential stateroom and bath, three guest cabins and teak decks. Additions to the fantail included a vast leather settee, patio furniture and bulletproof glass. In the false smokestack, there was an elevator with a pulley system designed so that President Roosevelt could transport himself to the boat deck. The fantail couch is designed so that each sitting party has their legs completely stretched out when sitting back and the president could sit equally as his guests with his legs supported. An antiaircraft machine gun was installed and mounted when the president was on board. Ship ballast was added to the vessel to account for these upgrades. However, the ship still rolled as far as 48 degrees in rough waters, causing many a guest to turn to the rail. The president, being the sailor he was, was affected little.

Presidential yachts sail now on a sea of memories, long sleek ships that were once symbols of the presidency, tools of diplomacy, centers of hospitality, and breezy salt-air retreats from the steamy heat of a Washington summer. But for nearly a century, presidents looking for an easy escape from the strains and tensions of the White House found one on the deck of a government yacht.

Beginning with USS Despatch in 1880, a succession of yachts awaited the pleasure of every commander in chief from Rutherford B. Hayes to Gerald R. Ford. The roster includes Dolphin, Sylph, Mayflower, Potomac, Sequoia, Williamsburg, Honey Fitz, and the only sailboat on the list, John F. Kennedy’s 62-foot Manitou, an ocean racer on loan from the Coast Guard.
