Is The Landmark Sears Still Open?

Sears, the last open store at Landmark Mall in Alexandria’s West End, is preparing to close as the mall redevelopment remains uncertain. Closing sales have begun, and Sears has released flyers for merchandise up to 70% off. Temporary jobs are now available at the store. A final closing date will depend on when merchandise and eventually the store’s fixtures are sold. As of 2024, Sears has a minimal presence in the retail market, with only a few remaining stores and a focus on maintaining its online operations.

The Sears store at Landmark Mall is holding a store-closing sale, signaling the end for the last tenant at the shuttered Alexandria shopping venue. The Carpenter’s Shelter has moved into a portion of the former Macy’s while Kmart, a brand that merged with Sears, closed its last outpost in Manhattan in July and is now slated to be replaced by a Wegman’s grocery store.

Plans for the redevelopment of the Landmark Mall, which could include the Sears property, are moving along. As of early 2020, planning related to demolition and redevelopment was still in progress, and decisions about funding and issuing of permits were not completed. On July 1, 2020, it was announced that Sears would also be closing as part of a plan to close 28 stores nationwide, leaving the mall entirely vacant.

The former Landmark Mall site will be transformed into a mixed-use development anchored by a new Inova Alexandria Hospital. Sears is currently open to customers and members, offering applications, hardware, and mattresses.
