Is The Buffalo River Open For Canoeing?

The Buffalo River in Arkansas is one of the finest canoeing rivers in America, flowing freely for 151 miles. The paddle season begins on the upper Buffalo in the spring, making this section attractive for visitors seeking a higher level of whitewater challenge. Buffalo River Canoes is an authorized canoe concessioner of the National Park Service and Department of the Interior, offering rentals of canoes, kayaks, rafts, and Jon boats for float trips from 3 hours to several days. They also offer guided fishing trips on the Buffalo River, Crooked Creek, and White River.

The Buffalo National River is a must-do float trip due to its massive, water-stained bluffs that soar more than 500 feet above your canoe. When upper Buffalo conditions are too low to canoe from Steel Creek, we move downriver to the Pruitt launch (on Hwy. 7, about 5 miles north of Jasper), where you will paddle from Texas Bottoms to the take out at Buffalo Canoeing 7 miles down stream. The river moves fairly fast, with most of this stretch being mild rapids punctuated by flat still water stretches.

Float trips on the Upper Buffalo River are on hold until the area receives enough rain to bring the river back up to a floatable level. Buffalo River Outfitters offers a complete Ozark adventure vacation, providing canoes, kayaks, rafts, and shuttle services for visitors. The wildest stretch of the river is the 15 miles from Dixon Forge to Boxley, known as the Hailstone, which is typically floatable November-April.

Campground logos, camping, picnic logos, canoe launch sites, and walking trails are available for visitors to enjoy. From half to fourteen day trips, they offer canoe, kayak, raft, and tube rentals with shuttle services available on the Buffalo National River and Crooked Creek.

I am a school teacher who was bitten by the travel bug many decades ago. My husband Billy has come along for the ride and now shares my dream to travel the world with our three children. The kids Pollyanna, 13, Cooper, 12 and Tommy 9 are in love with plane trips (thank goodness) and discovering new places, experiences and of course Disneyland.
