Is Sailing The Whitest Thing Ever?

A new formula for white paint has been developed by Purdue University scientists, resulting in the world’s whitest white paint. The paint reflects 98.1 percent of all light that hits it and remains significantly cooler than the ambient temperature even when sitting in full sunlight. Engineer Xiulin Ruan designed the paint to keep buildings cooler and prevent the perception that sailing is only for rich white people. The majority of sailboat sails are white due to the sailcloth material color, Dacron, which is spun into yarns used to create the paint.

The whitest paint on Earth surpasses the ultrawhite paint created by the same group of engineers at Purdue University. The paint was designed to keep buildings cooler and prevent the spread of harmful bacteria. Sailing is generally a welcoming community, with scenes around the world featuring non-whites, such as South Africa and the UK. However, Black and other people of color are statistically underrepresented in the sport of sailing, making it necessary to make the group explicitly and actively inclusive by using anti-racist language.

Sailing scenes around the world are generally welcoming, with non-whites being torch bearers and the UK also participating in the sport. To make the group more inclusive, it is necessary to use anti-racist language and make the sport more inclusive. This list is largely reflective of liberal white people, who would have a huge cultural disconnect with these things.

In conclusion, the whitest white paint on Earth is not just about the color, but also about the inclusivity and diversity of the sport.

  • There white people commenting all confused about the whole “people of color” thing. I literally read a comment saying “colored?? does my pink skin not count as color? how is that fair?” like wtf? Why are people like that so upset that they aren’t considered people of color too? Why would you want to be part of the oppressed group? Like let’s be honest, if we all had to option to choose to be the oppressor or the oppressed majority would pick oppressor, because that’s the easier one. To those white people complaining about the whole people of color thing and why white people aren’t included, Please just people happy you live in a country that favors you, and you aren’t in the oppressed group and nor will you ever. You live in a country where you’re systematically better off. Just be happy you have that chance instead of complaining. Some of us aren’t so lucky. Also I feel like the only people who can see something wrong with the term “people of color” are ignorant people of any race.

  • I really don’t get the point of this article. I understand that they are trying to promote diversity and props for that, but I just don’t get what is so special about “People of color trying sailing for the first time.” In this article, my honest opinion is that this does the opposite of promoting diversity. This was a shabby attempt…you could have done a whole lot better Buzzfeed

  • As a person of color I find the article concept odd. I get it, but it’s still…odd….Like someone said in the comments, unnecessary. I’ve been a boat many times in my life before and I’m not affluent either. I don’t think it’s that unusual for non-white people to go sailing. But maybe it’s because I live near the ocean.

  • The title could have JUST been “PEOPLE try sailing for the first time” because the way they are portraying this to be you are a rich white person if you have sailed. I’m half white and half Mexican, my family is very wealthy but that doesn’t mean I have a boat, I’m lucky to have my car… So honestly they should have steered clear of the race related topic, honestly it just seems that they just want attention.

  • The comments about the absence of white or black are all mixed up. Some of you are going into scientific, or technical terms and are not pointing it out. If you are talking about colours in light, then yes, all the colours of light together makes white. If you are talking about colours in pigment, then yes, all colours with pigment together will make black, brown or grey. So with light, black is the absence, and with pigment, white is the absense. Big sigh

  • I’m gonna get all sorts of shit but I don’t care: it’s a JOKE. Private sailing and yachting are stereotyped as recreation for wealthy white people, privileged to own their own boats. The joke is that you don’t see as many minorities, who are stereotyped as more “working class”, who have the luxury of owning private boats or sailing. It’s kind of making fun of both sides of this stereotype. It’s not a malicious attack, and if you think it is, perhaps you can’t handle it when a grain of truth is being presented to you. And saying I am a “person of color,” isn’t necessarily derogatory. There have been beauty ads where you hear ladies say, “I am a woman of color” with pride to highlight her unique skintone, and I think that’s a beautiful thing. It’s just ridiculous that people are crucifying Buzzfeed when this vid is a Dave Chapelle skit just waiting to happen, and no one would say boo if he grabbed a mic right now and picked up where this article left off… and then some.

  • I wonder if that Asian lady thinks that American seafood just happens lol. Does she get that the majority of fishermen here are indeed Caucasian and that’s how people get to eat it at low and and high-end restaurants? She seems to want to pretend that only Asian fisherman have a purpose for going on boats lol. I think she’s forgetting some minor details. Just proves that the ignorance is in every race and nationality.

  • 1. It’s AMERICA, so it’s color, not colour. 2. WHO CARES if it’s colour or color, both are correct, but normal Americans use “color” and Americans that want to be show-offy dickheads use “colour” to appear more cultured. 3. BLACK PEOPLE DON’T SAIL, so yes it is a white thing. Stop being so butthurt over the title not being politically correct when it is ACTUALLY correct. It’s rare in the black community PERIOD, so freaking what? I’ve NEVER heard of a black person sailing in my life and I’ve only heard of 5 or less actually going on a boat.

  • I don’t feel that saying People of Color is racist. I’m Puerto Rican and there is many shades in my family. I think it’s just the way they’re trying to describe a group of people without being offensive. HOWEVER, in the case there seems to be no reason to point out that they are POC. They could have just said “People try sailing for the first time.” They didn’t need to say that it’s “a white thing.” That was not necessary and it’s stereotyping both white people and POC.

  • Ok, all other race people in America, your next vacation must be in the Carribbean, and you have to go on a boat. Plenty of really nice black captains with their own boats. You’re gonna love it! White people don’t have a lock on sailing. Everybody does it, and it’s one of the most relaxing things you’ll ever do, even if you’re busy the whole time.

  • Racism seems like it will never stop, no matter how subtle it is. I hate it when people talk about skin color or looking different. I get asked every now and then “where are you from?” as if I’m an alien. They make me ashamed of having any type of ancestry. These days I go out of my way on any application I sign by check-marking “white caucasian”. And when people ask “where are you from?” I just say, ” I was born and raised in this state. I have to pretend to not have any ancestry like white caucasians lack. It’s the only way. I’m sad to say that there are people in this world I have met who only treat “white caucasian” classified people as humans. White caucasians truly do have the easiest lives. Once I started classifying myself like that, life got easier, and opportunities arose for me.

  • Dear Buzzfeed, Is this a skit? Is this article a social experiment to see how people respond to it?? I’m asking questions first because I don’t want to assume anything about this article and the people in it or the ones who made it. I ask these questions because of the simple fact there have been and are thousands of NON-AMERICAN “People of Color” around the world who were born and raised in towns near oceans and rivers who survive and have businesses through fishing and even growing/harvesting seaweed; there were no White people teaching these ethnicities to do these things either. So, doing the “White” thing in this case is really nothing different from anyone else…If this article was done genuinely and not in a joking manner, then I would seriously like to have an open convo about the perspectives portrayed about the different civilizations that were on boats and sailing before they were “doing White things”….To me, this is kind of a closed minded extreme Westerner view..Like I said, I’m up for convo with the Buzzfeed people 🙂 Nothing is better than getting a better perspective of where someone is coming from. So, I’d like to know!

  • I always get treated weirdly in life anytime I put anything other than “white Caucasian” on forms and applications. Whenever I check mark “wc”, I get treated more like a human. This is the way my life is; and this is the way it has to be. I hate the city I live in. Lesson learned: if you wanted to be treated like an equal, always put “wc” on your applications and forms; it’s the only way.

  • I genuinely thought that in order for something to be racist; remarks/ statements required some sort of insult and/ personal repulsion expressed towards a particular race. To be fair, the use of the term of ‘People of Color’, isn’t all that offence in my personal opinion. My anger is more directed to the intention and nature of the article. It seems to me that they are trying to imply that ‘colored people’ are not accustom to such activities. Believe it or not, but Sailing has always been considered to be a ‘luxury’ that only privileged white/ caucasian people enjoy in their spare time. This article is a sly and indirect way of mocking ‘people of color’. Despite my frustration with the intention of this article, I think that sometimes we focus a little too much on the things that can be ignored. We have become too sensitive to the malicious nature of ‘Non-People of Color/ Non-Colored People’ (fit whoever you like into that category). A lot of the time, people deliberately do and say things that can be identified as racial abuse. And they do so just to get a negative reaction out of the ones who actually listen. I’m not in any way trying to suggest that we ignore everything that we see as offensive, but we can/ should express our concerns in the things that actually do deserve a response, so we don’t always seem like we’re complaining about any and everything being a racist attack. We have to learn to choose our battles. This article and entire website is just blatantly stupid. A title like this only proves that ignorance in regards to race and social status is still very much alive thanks to the media.

  • Lol. People angry that a term created to be PC was used. “People of color” is a very widely used term to mean people that aren’t White. That’s just how it is. It never meant anything else. It just goes to show that you aren’t allowed to be descriptive at all when it comes to race or you get called racist. For internet articles, it’s best to just title your stuff without mentioning race just so you don’t have to deal with the backlash of people who don’t know the difference between being racist and being descriptive.

  • I understand the point of this article is just to make a point that people who aren’t white don’t seem to do things for leisure as much as white people do. HOWEVER I think Buzzfeed (as much as I love the company) went about this in the wrong way by the name of the title. Also blame can be the fault of the people in the article. By generalizing and saying that all white people who are rich did not do any work except for things like this is not an acceptable statement. At the same time, political correctness is the driving factor as to why many people including myself find this article in poor taste. If we weren’t as concerned with being correct by society’s standards, then we would only acknowledge that the point of this article is to show how cultures differ in their activities and how people who aren’t white seem to do less leisurely activities. 🙂

  • People of color, often shortened to PoC/poc/POC is anyone who is not white. People seemed to be a bit confused. People of color is the correct, political, nonracial term to describe anyone who is not white. “Why not people sail?” Because this article was not made for white people! They specifically made it for PoCs! You guys don’t need to be in everything! White is literally the absence of color! Um, here’s an idea. Read a fucking history book if you think this is unfair for white people.

  • I’m white and all I know is manual labour….. I’m not rich tho. haha. I think sailing is a very middle class thing. I’m gonna change that this summer by buying a cheap fishing boat, fixing it up and selling it, then with that money get a cheap sailing boat and fixing it up to sail the atlantic. Oh, I’ve done “the black thing” btw, made a living from singing black/american(motown) music. So I will be British, white, poor and sailing across the Atlantic singing black-american music, drinking rum and smoking a big phat joint!!!

  • The earliest known reference to an organization devoted to ships in ancient India is to the Mauryan Empire from the 4th century BC. It is believed that the navigation as an applied science originated on the river Indus some 5000 years ago. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maritime_history Interesting also… Age of Navigation Main article: History of navigation In early modern India and Arabia the lateen-sail ship known as the dhow was used on the waters of the Red Sea, Indian Ocean, and Persian Gulf. Also… The exact origins of the dhow are lost to history. Most scholars believe that it originated in India between 600 B.C. to 600 A.D

  • I’m black and white, and yes the title was inconsiderate but nothing in the article was offensive. Honestly, I never did boat until I met my white family, and yes few black people do it. Its little thing like thing like the arguments below that make things worse, I see it happen all the time between the two sides of my family. So, please be open about it and judge the article for the content not the title.

  • I really don’t like how she said, when rich white people are on boats that’s the only manual labor they do. I guess I would call my family ‘rich’. (I’m not sure. I don’t know.) But, I do more manual labor than a lot of my Mexican, Black, and Asian friends who just get to be lazy. While I’m the one cleaning the house, and doing the laundry, mowing the lawns, cleaning after the pets. I actually do a lot of work. They’re lucky.

  • There were three different races of human beings on that boat. Three different groups with different skin colors. There were literally people of color on that boat sailing together for the first time. Exactly what the title states. Nothing more, nothing less. There is no need to be politically correct and defend something that doesn’t need defending. That kind of thinking and nitpicking is what keeps races divided. It is what keeps racism alive.
