Is Royal Caribbean Doing Another World Cruise?

Royal Caribbean International has announced its inaugural Ultimate World Cruise, a record-breaking 274-night journey around the world from December 10, 2023. The cruise will visit 65 countries, more than 150 destinations, and 11 Great Wonders of the World. The cruise is set to start in Miami on December 10, 2023, and end in September 10, 2024, in the same port. The cruise will be based on the Serenade of the Seas cruise ship, which departed Miami in December with over 800 guests.

Due to the ongoing conflict in the Red Sea, Royal Caribbean International has decided to change the third segment of the Ultimate World Cruise, allowing guests to have a say in the new itinerary. The cruise will begin in Miami on December 10, 2023, and end in September 10, 2024, in the same port. Of the 150 ports of call, 40 are either rarely available or rarely available in Royal Caribbean.

The Ultimate World Cruise is a unique adventure that has never been offered by Royal Caribbean before, with four segments and a ship that will be revitalized prior to the sailing date. The cruise is expected to offer an epic vacation experience, with the Serenade of the Seas cruise ship departed Miami in December with over 800 guests.

Despite the challenges posed by the conflict in the Red Sea, Royal Caribbean International is raising the bar for world cruises with the debut of the inaugural Ultimate World Cruise.

How much does a 3 year world cruise cost?

Villa Vie Residences has purchased a former Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines ship and plans to transform the ship in time to offer a 3.5-year cruise beginning May 2024. Prices for passage start at just under $33,000 per year.

Organizers of the 1,301-day cruise say passengers will stop at 425 ports across 147 countries, spending between two and seven days in each port.

And unlike the Life at Sea cruise that never set sail, this cruise will offer a more flexible pricing plan.

Passengers have the option of renting or buying a cabin. Those who rent can do so for as little as 35 days, buying as many segments as they would like. Inside cabins start at $89 per person per day, while outside cabins begin at $119 per person per day.

Are world cruises worth it?

In December 2023, Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas will set sail from the docks in Miami. Rather than simply bearing south for a pootle around the Caribbean, this ship will be embarking on the most ambitious itinerary ever attempted: 150 destinations, in 65 countries, across seven continents — in nine months. That’s a total of 274 nights on board. French Guiana, Brazil, Antarctica, Hawaii, French Polynesia, Australia, Indonesia, China, Japan, India and Egypt are just a handful of the destinations on the slate. Even by the hyperbolic standards of cruise marketing, this is a voyage that truly deserves the adjective “legendary”.

Round-the-world cruises might be anathema to some, but I live for these lengthy voyages. I love exploring different lands from the comfort of a cruise ship, and meeting new people along the way.

I’ve taken two round-the-world cruises. The first was a 108-night itinerary aboard Fred Olsen’s Black Watch in 2018; this was followed by a 168-night adventure from Dover to South Africa, Asia and Australia that ended on March 19, 2020, just days before the UK was pushed into lockdown. I’ve been desperate to escape back to one of these floating homes ever since.

I’m not your typical world-cruiser. Embarking Black Watch — which sailed to the Caribbean, South America and the Pacific — at 37 years old, I was the youngest passenger booked for the entire sailing and it was the same for my 168 nights on Fred Olsen’s Boudicca a year later. Most people who sail for the duration tend to be newly retired or cruise enthusiasts that spend days — rather than months or years — at home between sailings.

Is the Ultimate world cruise still going?

TikTok has been rife with reporting about and from the Ultimate World Cruise, which began on December 10, 2023, and will end on September 10, 2024. Many spectators online are treating it like a reality TV show in live time, feverishly sharing clips and commenting on any drama that occurs.

If the idea of spending three years on a cruise ship made you claustrophobic, it’s time to look away now.

Life at Sea Cruises – which is due to depart in November for a three-year round-the-world cruise – reckons that people are so enthused by the idea of sailing around the world nonstop, that they’re going to continue the journey indefinitely, making it “the cruise that never ends.”

Is there a cruise that goes all the way around the world?

Oceania Cruises. Many world cruises depart in January and sail in the 100- to 140-day range, mostly wrapping up by April or May. Oceania’s 180-day world cruises last until midsummer, and are often “true” around-the-world sailings, ending in the same port they first embarked from.

Oceania’s 2025 Global Horizons sailing lasts a whopping 196 days onboard Insignia, roundtrip from Miami. The sailing includes several destinations in the Eastern Caribbean, and—extraordinary for a world voyage—a week of scenic cruising along the Amazon River. The voyage continues in South America before crossing the Atlantic to the remote islands of Tristan de Cunha, a British Overseas Territory, before making landfall again in Namibia, tracing the African coast through South Africa, Mozambique, and the French department of Mayotte (another rare stop for a cruise), island-hopping in the Indian Ocean before calling in India.

The sailing covers a lot of ground in Asia—Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, China, Japan, the Philippines, Brunei, and Indonesia—before cruising the west and south coasts of Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, French Polynesia, and Hawaii. Crossing the Pacific to San Diego the ship then hops down the coasts of Mexico and Central America through the Panama Canal before returning to Miami in mid-July.

Oceania’s 2026 Around the World in 180 Days sailing is also roundtrip from Miami. Sailing westbound, the itinerary covers the east and west coasts of South America, the South Pacific, Australia, Southeast Asia, and much of the Middle East before transiting the Mediterranean to spend significant time in northwestern Europe and the Baltic Sea before crossing the far north Atlantic via Iceland and Canada before returning to Miami.

What happened to the 3 year cruise around the world?

About a month after Life at Sea Cruises canceled its debut three-year voyage because it couldn’t secure a ship, another company has done just that. Villa Vie Residences, which plans to sail the world in 3.5 years, announced last week that it has purchased a 924-passenger ship that is expected to launch in May.

The 30-year-old MS Braemar, which will be renamed Villa Vie Odyssey, was purchased from Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, a Britain-based and Norwegian-owned cruise line. The ship has previously sailed with the Crown Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line brands. It will undergo a multimillion-dollar renovation that will begin early next year and take roughly eight weeks to complete. After it launches, the ship will stop at ports in about 150 countries.

“It’s a continuous cruise that will really never stop,” said Mikael Petterson, Villa Vie Residences’ founder and CEO. “Our goal is to make this more of a lifestyle and residence, more than your typical cruise.”

How much does a 365 day cruise cost?

As travelers, we’re so used to paying piecemeal for vacations—booking airfare here, the hotel or Airbnb there, and splurging on meals and drinks upon arrival. We don’t often realize the true total cost as it’s stretched across several payments and to many sources.

That’s what makes the steep price tag (from $14,719 to $105,500 per person based on double occupancy in 2022, plus taxes and port fees), of a world cruise seem like sticker shock. But is it really? World cruises (cruises that last around 100 to 180 nights) may seem expensive, but when you factor in having a roof over your head, getting to experience many countries, with all noshing and imbibing included, they’re actually not that expensive.

A Hack to Make It Affordable. Ever consider renting out your house or apartment via sites like Airbnb.com or VRBO.com? Imagine raking in cash while sipping margaritas on your private patio in the open ocean. Airbnb.com listings in New York City command between $80 and $144 per night, on average, more during peak season, so if you hosted for the duration of a world cruise, you might put $8,000+ (plus taxes and cleaning fees) back in your bank account to cover your rent or mortgage.

Make sure you check about city ordinances, however, as some allow 30-night minimums per reservation. You can always stipulate that in your listing, too. Some condo and apartment buildings are not too keen on long-term guests so it’s best to check with the landlord or condo association. Another option to find a long-term renter is to contact local universities for leads on graduate students or visiting faculty.
