PDQ Yachts, a leading catamaran builder, has closed its sailboat division and is now selling its assets to Antares Yachts. The company, which built the PDQ 41 and PDQ 34, has moved to a factory in Whitby, Ontario, which was previously owned by Whitby Boat Works. The assets of PDQ Yachts will be auctioned tomorrow at its manufacturing plant in Whitby, Ontario, where it is opening a new production facility in North Carolina to support an aggressive expansion strategy.
The PDQ 32 has proven to be a high-quality boat, outpacing much larger boats and most PDQ 32s. The PDQ 36 is a strong, high-quality boat that will add credibility to the increasing acceptance of cruising multihulls. Designed by Alan Slater, the 36 has been consistently updated through the years and is still in production today. The current model is the PDQ 36 Capella.

Is the PDQ 34 power catamaran any good?
The PDQ 34 is very economical to operate, maneuverable, carefully and strongly built, and makes intelligent use of available interior space. It’s easy and safe to get around belowdecks and topside, is bright and airy inside, and it’s a good sea boat in moderate conditions. Workmanship is top notch, from the stainless steeling railings topside to the inlaid cherry soles and flawless fiberglass tooling below.
Concerning the few complaints we have about the boat, Simon Slater, PDQ president, said he is in general agreement with our observations and plans to address these issues. We like the PDQ 34 a lot but the poor tank access is a concern.

Sailing Yacht A was delivered by Nobiskrug on 3 February 2017, and left Kiel on 5 February 2017. It exited the Baltic Sea in light mode on near-empty fuel tanks in order to clear the Drogden Strait with minimum draught. It underwent final sea trials and the final fit-out at the Navantia shipyard in Cartagena, Spain. Boat International called it “the boundary pushing superyacht”. The yacht is owned by Melnichenko through Valla Yachts Ltd. of Bermuda, and was initially registered there at Hamilton. In December 2021 the yacht was moved to the Isle of Man flag and registered at Douglas.

Built in Canada, she’s a great choice for cruising enthusiasts looking for an alternative to traditional monohull trawlers. This is a very roomy boat—indeed, there’s more usable living space in the PDQ than one expects in a 34-footer.
