The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the U.S. has a comprehensive list of what can and cannot be brought in luggage through TSA security. This includes carry-on bags, checked bags, and items not allowed in checked bags. Sharp weapons are no longer allowed, but other items may be allowed if you are a ticketed passenger.
TSA screeners do not have law enforcement authority, so they cannot arrest you. However, they can call airport police for assistance. To ensure a smooth travel experience, avoid common mistakes and check with your airline’s policies.
In the U.S., only ticketed passengers can go through security after 9/11. Non-travelers can escort family and friends to the gate without a ticket. The final decision on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint rests with the TSA officer. Officers may ask you to power up your electronic device.
Airport security measures also limit certain items in restricted areas or on board planes. TSA does not prohibit photographing, videotaping, or filming at security checkpoints as long as the screening process is not interfered with or sensitive.
Eligible travelers do not need to remove shoes, belts, light outerwear, laptops, electronics larger than a cell phone, or travel-size liquids. Most TSA officers are not commissioned law enforcement officers and their role is to conduct screening of passengers, baggage, and cargo.
In summary, TSA security is responsible for ensuring a smooth and stress-free travel experience by limiting the entry of dangerous items, including carry-on and checked baggage.
