Is It Possible To Bring A Desktop Computer On An Airplane?

Desktop computers and computer components are allowed as both checked baggage and carry-on by the TSA. However, the TSA is always at their discretion for which items can be carried on a plane. The best way to travel with a desktop PC is by packing it in your carry-on bag if possible, as you are in charge of your carry-on.

Most airlines allow passengers to bring desktop computers in both carry-on and checked luggage, but the computer must still comply with carrier weight limits for baggage found online. To pack your desktop computer for a flight, disassemble it, pack the components safely and separately, secure the computer case, and check your airline’s regulations surrounding taking a computer on a plane.

Flying with desktop computers or gaming PCs (a tower and monitor) is allowed on planes in both carry-on and checked baggage, but they are generally not recommended due to their size, weight, and lack of portability. It is best to rely on laptops or other portable devices.

To transport desktop computers on aircraft, passengers should remove as many parts as possible and place them in their carry-on bag. Laptop computers are also to be taken out through standard TSA screening but may remain stowed through the PreCheck lane.

As long as the computer fits in their luggage dimensions and is under the “official” size limit of 10x16x24, it is safe to take it as carry-on. However, it is important to note that a desktop computer is still subject to carry-on regulations.
