How is Italy for black travelers?

Italy is a beautiful country with good food and interesting history, but it is not the least welcoming place for Black travelers and travelers of color. Many people experience disgust from locals and poor treatment, and racism is heavily covered in the news. Spain is less welcoming, with issues such as being ignored, avoided on the metro, and reluctantly taking photos. Some Latin American people have negative experiences due to stereotypes and anti-Latin American sentiment.

China is least welcoming, with anti-Black racism well documented and coming to the forefront during the pandemic. African immigrants were discriminated against and accused of carrying the virus, and even before the pandemic, Black travelers felt like a spectacle when visiting major tourist destinations. Despite this, some Black travelers have had a good time in Beijing, where they almost felt like they were not noticed.

While there are rarely incidents worse than getting started at or having photos taken of them, given the clear anti-Black sentiment in China, it is important to be prepared for any potential issues. The best part about Spain is the ability to get cheaper flights to North Africa.

Is Greece safe for black travelers?

Greece has a long-standing tradition of welcoming people of all backgrounds, including those of African descent. However, people of color have not made Greece a specific destination, and Greeks have not established a special network of hotels, resorts, or restaurants to cater to them. Despite this, it is believed that all people of color are treated equally as other guests in Greece. However, some communities may face stares from individuals not accustomed to seeing people of color.

When making special travel arrangements, agencies specializing in servicing African-Americans or U. K.-Africans may have limited experience in Greece. However, Rodgers Travel, a black-owned agency in Philadelphia, handles clients of all colors. The best advice is to go to any travel agency that handles Greece arrangements and expect to be treated like everyone else.

  • Im a 65 year old greek with 40 years in the restaurant business and i say this all is utter BS. we serve the customer and we dont pester him untill he raises a hand indicating he needs something. i ask if everything was ok at the end when the customer asks to pay. we dont see color here. we try our best to serve good food and be polite to everyone

  • I visited Greece 🇬🇷 over a decade ago before the rise in the migrant crisis from Africa and the Middle East… I was treated 👌🏾 but better after they learned I was from 🇺🇸 … I can only imagine how bad it is now with the migrant crisis… I would return with a 🇬🇷 person who knew the lay of the land and spoke the language… I have such a friend and would return to 🇬🇷 with them. Unless a place is a well traveled tourist destination, I don’t go there without local folks on the ground to help navigate traps and negative experiences… that’s how I’ll be traveling in Africa as well…

  • Ok, I would have completely agreed with you had my family and I not been to Greece, Santorini and other islands as well and we experienced the same thing. However, it was not until we asked why they do not attend to us and the server said that they only come over when called, not to harass you every minute. It’s a culture thing, people overseas spend hours at restaurants talking, catching up, enjoying time with each other and the waiters don’t just automatically bring things to you or come over to ask how they can help you, they wait for you to call them. Once my family and I realized that, we had no issue. It’s not always a racism thing and if you think it is, then just call them on the B.S.

  • But then there’s folks who will travel to a European country and say that they had the best time of their life (see MaryJane YouTuber). Maybe it depends on region and politics. During WW2 some Black US soldiers decided to stay in Europe and not return to the US because Jim Crow didn’t exist where they were and they claimed they were treated far better. Some Black American artists also moved to France. Fast forward today, the migrant crisis and the rise of the “far-right” in Europe has made it worse. Spending $$$ in Africa, Caribbean or even a black Pacific nation (say Fiji) is certainly ideal though.

  • No surprise here at all that’s how those folks are all over the world. I had visited Edinburgh, Scotland for the first and last time in 2017 and had a similar experience like our sister had to the point that I had ended up leaving the restaurant. I would gladly visit one countries in south, east or west Africa or even the Caribbean before going to take vacation in a European country.

  • I gt no reason to step in Europe…. The Passport Sista crowd needs to cut it out…where are the critics of the PPB on this who been laughing and mocking brothas…y’all getting warnings from Italy to Canada to Greece…wake up..and traveling to some countries in Asia may not be good also after the insults

  • Come on now! As you know just because one person had a negative experience you can’t say that all of Greece was the same way, that’s just like saying all white people are the sane. My experience in Greece and several other places in Europe was all good to include Germany, Ireland, Croatia and a few other places in Europe and my experience was good. It’s unfortunate that some people have a negative experience, but that doesn’t mean all of Europe is bad. If she didn’t like the service she should have went to another restaurant I mean what would she have done if she was back home. I am a black man enjoying my travels in Europe and other continent’s enjoying life and different cultures and would advise people not to be so quick to judge another country as a whole because of one positive or one negative experience.

  • I have been to KOS Greece they are way different on how they treated me. It was amazing service hospitality all of that. If you go to these name branded places that are really popular they act like that. You will get a better experience if you go to other places in Greece. Just saying I’m sorry you had a bad experience. I lived in Germany 20yrs and only once I had a bad experience.

  • I’m sorry that she had a bad experience but a lot of people don’t understand the Greek dining experience and culture. Unlike here in America when you get a table in Greece they expect you to take your time and enjoy yourself (many people stay at restaurants for hours). Servers never want you to feel rushed like here in America and then throw a bill at you. There are many differences in Greece but I don’t believe it’s racism in this case especially when they invited this sister in the restaurant. It’s a culture thing not to harass patrons, you have to call on the servers when you go to Greece and get their attention. I know a lot of tourists find this unusual.

  • Opened the article to see the “Blatant Discrimination”, still haven’t seen it after viewing the whole article. In Greece waiters do not come to ask you if you need this or that, it happens but not that often . You have signal them to come towards your table, with your eyes or your hand. If you want to be served take off your sunglasses so that the waitor can look your eyes and see if you need attention in your table. Noone is going to approach you if you are dressed up like a detective and filming yourself. You guys have a serious victim syndrome or something, take it easy, you are not the center of the world, noone is.

  • I remember in 2001 or 2003 me and my family went out to eat at Applebee’s the waitress was PC she took all our orders and never came back to see if we needed anything everyone was wondering where she was, she was cornered off by herself perusal us eat .so complain about it to someone else that works there. I don’t know if they fired her or not but we didn’t leave a tip.

  • I’ve been to European countries and it’s been disappointing except when u go to the black or immigrant areas especially in London those countries r having a hard time with their economies so they can’t be benevolent like a proper white person is supposed to act 🤔I don’t go to Europe anymore. Ethiopia is fantastic! Just the language issues they treat u like family if u act with respect anywhere in Africa.

  • i just feel like if you would like to be respected in a country you should at least know their language or go with someone who can translate this goes for african, asian, the americas and european countries people will want to speak to you because there will be no language barrier educating yourself about a place and it’s language is so crucial

  • Psalm 44:13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us. 14Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people. Deuteronomy 28:37 And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all nations whither the LORD shall lead thee

  • I went to Gambia in October omg I didn’t want to leave I cried when it was time to leave…..I met someone there omg very nice classy well kept professional GOT HIS OWN African Brother we kept in touch lol I booked another trip this coming October he bought me some Gambian wear he faced toned them and showed lol I’m telling YOU SISTAS GET ON BOARD the men will blow your mind but as always good in bad in all cultures no shooting no fighting no racism JUST LOVE LOVE LOVE NO BLACKS HATING EACH OTHER NO MEN TALKING THAT KEVIN SAMUELS CRAP go for the experience

  • Why would you continue to sit & be disrespected & eat their food! We are out of our minds. Get your behind up & get out of there. If I see the slightest hint of dislike of me or any kind of discriminating behavior, I’m gone. Then I go into my phone & tell everyone I know & I tell them to tell everyone they know! We must change our reaction to the actions of lunatics. NOTHING CHANGES UNTIL WE DO!

  • Hi brothers and sisters, you can go to the Caribbean countries like: Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Curaçao, Haïti, Barbados, St. Lucia, Bonaire, Aruba, Suriname and more beautiful lands and islands. There they really like to have their brothers and sisters on vacation. They really treat you right, serve you right and so on. If you do this once, you will never go to Europe! Be blessed:goodvibes:

  • She start by saying ‘no one come to ask her how she is doing? etc. We dont have to concern ourselves with such things. You are a value just like everyone else. You can also choose. You have to have in mind that if you put your feet somewhere or seat at a table, you honor that place and that table just like that place and table honor you by welcoming you. We all are God’s creatures.

  • See this is prophecy spoken by Moses to our ancestors who disobeyed the commandments of the God of Israel who we our black people if that is what you want to name yourself. Deuteronomy 28:37,65And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all nations whither the LORD shall lead thee. And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:

  • You ask why BP continue to go around the very people that hate them, the answer is easy. To some of our people them people are Their god’s and nothing on this planet matter’s but the love of Their god’s,they can’t understand why they don’t love them the way they love them, it totally devastate their psychy to see that their god’s have nothing but absolute disdain for them

  • We shouldn’t have to limit where we can go just to be treated respectfully. If you want to visit a place like Jamaica, great, but if you want to experience Greek culture, food, architecture, etc. visiting a black nation instead isn’t going to fill that void. It sucks that she was discriminated against, and honestly there were worst things that could have happened, but that’s the chance she took.

  • Greece has been HORRIBLE for blacks since the late 1990s-early 2000s. After a disastrous trip to Greece in 2002 (I used to go frequently during the 80s and early 90s) I simply stopped going altogether. That whole place is trash now…I only revisited in late 2006 to see a long-time Nigerian friend of mine. He has since moved to Oslo.

  • Phil, could you please speak on the racism that goes on while in traffic? I noticed that for years when i pull up to a red light, the other car stays back, when I look over to see who the drivers are, it’s always Caucasian people there. There was a Caucasian woman that i met tears ago who confirmed that Caucasian people do this on purpose because they don’t like black people. This hate causes all kinds of wrecks and also deaths.
