Is It Currently Safe To Travel Within The United States?

The CDC has updated travel advisories for COVID-19, advising against nonessential travel. While most people who contract the virus will likely recover, it is most dangerous to the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Hospitals are seeing an increasing number of younger people being admitted as well. International visitors flying into the US now need to show proof of vaccination before boarding and a negative coronavirus test taken within three days of their flight.

Fully vaccinated people can now safely travel in the US, but there are still risks with flying, renting a car, staying in a hotel, or booking accommodations. The Department of State advises U.S. citizens not to travel to the country or leave as soon as it is safe to do so. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, occurs, particularly in urban centers and tourist locations. Violent crime and gun crime rarely affect tourists, but take care in unfamiliar areas.

The United States is generally safe to visit, with airport security making it more of a hassle. However, some states, like Wyoming, Montana, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Maine, have stricter travel restrictions. The Australian government warns its citizens that violent crime is more common than in Australia and gun crime is possible.

The most recent travel warnings issued by the US Department of State are listed below with links to useful resources for a safer travel experience. With COVID-19 cases rising, it is safe to travel in the US if you follow these instructions and guidelines from Enchanting Travels.

Under martial law, authorities can set curfews, seize property, and restrict movement. U. S. citizens should avoid travel to these areas.

The current “LGBT propaganda” law bans discussion of LGBTQI+ related topics, and the Supreme Court labeled the “international LGBT movement” as extremist in November 2023.

Terrorists continue to plan attacks in Russia, targeting tourist areas, transport hubs, markets, government buildings, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, events, schools, and airports. Is flying safe if I’m scared?

Air travel is becoming safer than ever, with studies showing an odds of one in 1. 2 million being involved in a plane crash. This is significantly less likely than the one-in-5, 000 odds of a car accident. If you find yourself on a plane where things have gone wrong, chances are you’ll survive. These numbers suggest that it’s perfectly safe to step onto a giant death trap, but if you choose to fly, consider performing a DIY plane inspection before ordering a Bloody Mary.

  • A lot of what was said is correct. I’m Australian and retired I’ve travelled four continents as a qualified nursing assistant. I did not earn a lot of money, but every year, I received six weeks of paid vacation time and about 10 days paid public holidays. So I travelled on the wrong side of the planet that meant 20 or 25 hours of flying time. The USA gets about the worst paid vacation and public holidays on the planet, and that’s bewildering to so many other nationals. After travelling via the USA several times, I think Americans are the most stressed out people.

  • Born and raised in Brooklyn,NY and I just got my passport last year. First place I traveled to was Istanbul Türkiye 🇹🇷 and had an amazing experience. 2nd place I hit was Paris France 🇫🇷 earlier this year and while there I got to visit Brussels Belgium 🇧🇪 for the day then returned utilizing their Eurostar high speed rail service. Fun experience ! But growing up to a Puerto Rican family Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 was the only place I would go to multiple times since a child where I can have a somewhat different culture experience even though it’s a United States territory. For people who don’t wanna travel outside of the United States mainland I would recommend hitting P.R. Up because YOU DONT NEED A PASSPORT and it’s only 3 hours and a 10 minutes from nyc.

  • I would suggest that many Americans have lost their sense of curiosity. They seem content to consume whatever is put in front of them. We live less than 3 hours from Canada and travel there frequently just because it’s a bit different. Sadly, many of our friends have never been there and have no interest in doing so. Other parts of the world are great too, just not as convenient.

  • I’m American, I own a passport (which I’ve used), and yet I really relate to all of this. Yet there’s one more problem that I think is complicating things even more: everyone is becoming more aware of their carbon footprints. As an American who relies on a car daily, as most do, airplane travel feels egregiously wasteful, like adding insult to injury. I mean, I think someone pointed out that we already pollute more than six times the global average just living the classic American lifestyle of driving to and from work and maybe taking one big trip per year in our personal vehicles. MOST people around the world don’t do any of this. I agree Americans should have more vacation time than we do, but I think another change that needs to happen is that we need to rediscover the idea of vacation resorts close to home. As you said, the French, for example, know how to relax while still in France. Having a healthy work-life balance and traveling are two different things when you think about it. I know you’re a travel website so this might be a hard pill to swallow, but no one “deserves” to take international vacations every year.

  • The USA is very diverse and beautiful. Most Americans cannot even afford to see our own country let alone other countries. Besides we are for the most part hated around the world, so why would we want to? Remember each state is very different with different customs, food etc. So, no it is not that we are not interested in the world it is for the reasons mentioned.

  • As an American, the world is too far away. If you live in Europe, other countries are less than an 1-2 hr flight. To get to other parts of the world, not including Canada, we need to fly 7-16 hours to get to Europe or Asia directly, not including transfers. Too much of a distance for most just to to experience a more authentic experience vs what we can find in the US.

  • there are simple reasons some Americans don’t travel outside America many places they would go are considered unsafe for Americans due to crime and drugs such as Accaupulco Mexico Cuba though the later has had an embargo on it since the early 60s. there was a time before 9/11/01 where young children didn’t need a passport to go to for ex the US Virgin Islands Bermuda etc. all you had to do was have your birth certificate stamped at customs I’ve wanted a passport for years because there are several places I’d like too see that require them such as UK France Italy Australia Japan etc.
