I Want To Study In Taiwan, But Do I Need A Visa?

Taiwan offers two types of visas for foreign students: Visitor Visa and Resident Visa. For those staying less than six months, the visitor visa is required. If the program is longer than six months, the resident visa is necessary.

Eligibility criteria for international students include being a high school graduate with an above-average grade every semester and being able to speak and write Chinese. For Chinese nationals studying abroad to attend a Taiwanese university, college, vocational school, high school, or lower, a Taiwan student visa is required.

Exchange students who wish to stay in Taiwan for more than 90 days but less than 180 days must apply for a Visitor Visa. Once the border policy is relaxed, students can apply for the TEEP program by contacting an individual program and submitting the application form and other required documents.

As there is no “Student Visa” for international students studying in Taiwan, students whose exchange period is less than 180 days can apply for an extendable Visitor Visa, and students whose exchange period is more than 180 days can apply for a Resident Visa.

For US citizens, a visa is required for stays of more than six months, as well as for study, Mandarin Chinese purpose, employment, or work purposes. All exchange students who stay in Taiwan for over 90 days but less than 180 days must get a Visitor Visa at a Taipei Representative Office.

Visa requirements for students in Taiwan include two-color passport-size photos, a photocopy of the passport, and original and recent passports. While it is possible to study in Taiwan without a visa in certain cases, long-term and full-degree programs often require the proper visa.
