How To Use A Snorkel With A Purge Valve?

Carla, an engineer at Subea, a new diving brand by Decathlon, explains how to use a snorkel with a purge valve. A purge valve is a one-way valve that allows water to be expelled from the snorkel without blowing it back out through the tube itself. When you return, water will be drained from the tube, and if any water gets into the snorkel, you may blow it out. This efficient water drainage ensures an uninterrupted and enjoyable underwater snorkeling experience.

A popular feature of a snorkel is a purge valve located below the mouthpiece. This allows water to drain through the bottom of the snorkel, making it easier to clear water. Any water that enters the tube is collected in a separate section right below the mouthpiece. This can be done with a normal exhale without having to chuck your head back or do any crazy aerobatics.

Having a snorkel with a purge or drain is handy, but a dry snorkel may be good for most straight-up snorkeling. Semi-dry snorkels are suitable for more straight-up snorkeling. A silicone purge valve can be added to your mask to easily clear any water that gets inside your dive mask.

The vent on top is more useful than the purge valve, as it prevents leaks if a grain of sand or other debris gets into the purge valve. Adjusting the mask strap for optimal security is essential for a smooth and relaxing underwater snorkeling experience.
