How To Take A Longboard On An Aircraft?

Most airlines accept skateboards and longboards on flights, but not all will allow you to carry them on the plane. Factors such as the airline, the size of your longboard, the size of the plane, your travel location, and how you’re carrying your board depend on the airline’s policies on transportation. Some airlines permit longboards as carry-on luggage or regular checked baggage, while others allow you to check in or hand carry.

Packing your longboard for air travel isn’t as complicated as it may seem. All you need to do is choose the right travel bag, prepare and protect your board, and secure it. Many airlines allow skateboards on a plane as long as you follow the rules. Skateboards as checked baggage are always allowed, but fees may apply.

Checking in your longboard is a simple task for most non-budget airlines, as longboards fall under the sports equipment category and are accepted as carry-on baggage. Some airlines may allow you to travel with a smaller board like a Derringer in the overhead bin for quick access when you don’t want to check any bags.

Almost all airlines allow longboards as checked baggage, but some do not allow them. If you have a longboard, they will only let you store it in the undercarriage of the plane. If you don’t have checked baggage, you will likely need to pay an additional sum for checking in your longboard as baggage.

When onboard, ask one of the cabin crew if they can stick your board in the coat storage. Your board must be packed in a recognized surfboard bag that doesn’t exceed 109in (277cm) or 71lb (32kg), and single surfboards are allowed.

Are longboards safer than skateboards?

Longboarding is a variation of skateboarding that uses longer boards with longer wheelbases and softer wheels, designed for stability and traction at high speeds. Unlike street skateboards, longboards can range from 32 to 50 inches in length. Ride characteristics differ from street skateboards due to the use of specialized longboard trucks, such as “traditional kingpin” (TKP) trucks optimized for tight turning radii, slides, grinds, and transition skating.

Longboards are typically paired with “reverse kingpin” (RKP) trucks for increased stability at higher speeds, more “surfy” carving characteristics, and greater ride comfort for commuting over longer distances.

Longboarding encompasses multiple disciplines, including downhill/race, freeride, freestyle, dance, and long-distance pushing (LDP). The idea of longboarding originated with surfers in Hawaii in the 1950s who created a new type of skateboard made of thick plywood shaped into a smaller version of a surfboard, with trucks and wheels screwed to the decks.

To ensure a smooth flight, consider your electric skateboard as a personal item and store it in a backpack or bag that meets the airline’s size restrictions. Before leaving, check the battery specifications, including lithium-ion batteries, which are regulated by airlines due to energy content. If the battery exceeds these limits, clearance or a different battery may be needed. Communicate with your airline beforehand to understand their rules for electric skateboards, as some airlines allow them as carry-ons, while others may require checking due to battery concerns. Being informed reduces stress at the airport.

Is A longboard good for travel?

Longboards are a versatile mode of long-distance travel that can be used for hiking and hitching. They have large, soft wheels that smooth out rough and uneven surfaces, and quality bearings that allow for both coasting and pushing. Longboards can be used to see more of a country than on planes, making cross-country trips into stories to tell the grandkids. When embarking on a journey, consider bringing a longboard as a companion. It’s easy to carry and can serve as a set of wheels when walking becomes monotonous.

The unique terrains of destinations can become experiences, rather than regrets when boardless. With a little forethought, a longboard can be a travel companion that inspires movement, new experiences, and a little living.

  • This depends very much on the airline you are flying with (the cheaper the flight, the more any extra length will cost) and the airport where you are travelling from I managed travelling with my longboard either by train / private cAR / bus /and by plane. For the flight I used my Backpack. I almost fell backwards when putting it on and I had to find check – in 27 or something…… took me about half an hour to find that special luggage check-in in the end I had a really great trip to spain with my board!
