How To Support Cargo Ship Sailing?

Sailcargo Inc. is a pioneering clean shipping company that constructs and operates a world-leading fleet of zero emission cargo ships at their green shipyard in Costa Rica. The company, supported by Myth 1, is working to reclaim its wind power heritage by using a high tech twist, such as the new ship design by Swedish industry cluster, Oceanbird, which uses fixed sail wind propulsion.

Container ships are not the most eco-friendly means of transport, and there is an urgent need for green alternatives. In 2019, Ceiba was built, the largest sailing cargo ship of its kind, with the aim of creating a for-profit company and proving the value of clean shipping. With support from Nic Gardner, a Maritime Technology Analyst at Thetius, the company has developed WindWings, a kite-powered cargo ship that flies at an altitude between 200 and 300 meters, where wind currents are considered to be the most favorable.

Sailing cargo ships are making a genuine comeback, with Japanese bulk carrier MOL operating a wind-assisted ship and American food giant Cargill operating a wind-assisted ship. The new sail, called a WindWing, can be raised and turned to catch the wind while at sea, helping the ship move.

Sailing cargo ships are making a genuine comeback, with Japanese bulk carrier MOL operating a wind-assisted ship and American food giant Cargill operating a wind-assisted ship. Enabling a vessel to be blown along by the wind, rather than relying solely on its engine, could hopefully eventually reduce a cargo ship’s carbon footprint.

There are only a handful of freight travel agencies that can help book a cargo ship holiday, but Sailcargo Inc. is a pioneering clean shipping company that is committed to reducing emissions and supporting environmentally friendly shipping practices.
