This article provides an overview of different types of kayak locks, factors to consider when choosing one, proper techniques for locking a kayak, and additional security measures. Kayaks should be stored indoors to protect their exterior from harmful elements like moisture, rain, and snow. However, if storing them outside can provide peace of mind and ensure the kayak stays safe from theft.
To lock up a kayak, there are several methods. One of the best ways to secure a kayak is by using a cable lock or locking straps to secure it to a solid anchor point, such as a dock, fence, or fence. If installing a kayak rack is not possible or you don’t have a garage, a tree or other permanent structure can be used as an anchoring point. Loop a cable lock or lock cables around and through the scupper plug holes or kayak handles to keep it locked and safe.
Steel cables with loops on the end can be found at Home Depot for cheap. Thread one through the drain plug, drill a hole through the two sections, insert a lock, and wrap the cable around the pipe assembly and the tree. To best protect the hull, hang the boat so that the hull faces up toward the ceiling.
The Canoe Lock is 14ft long for canoes and works by slipping the larger boat loop of each cable over the bow and stern. Loop the long cable around a fixed rack. If your boat is supported by a wall, simple pegs can be added on either side to give it a dedicated place to lean without sliding around. Most solutions require threading one or two long lockable cables through holes in the kayak and onto the fixed rack.
